Leaving behind the magic rainbows from the time of his life, David Cook gets in the rock groove on "Light On," an edgy pop/rock track that will be sure to reach a wide audience. Written by Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) and Brian Howes, "Light" explores the boundaries of Cook's distinct vocals without disbanding the hooky aspects that make songs hits.
Starting out slow, "Light" quickly transforms into a hard-edged piece of radio fare that is able to appeal to both active rock and Top 40 listeners, which will only prolong its chart life. The lyrics are not the most earth shattering, but they are among some of the most intellectual of recent 'Idol' lead singles. The chorus itself is catchy and easy to remember, but is a little anticlimactic and a little too high for Cook's range, especially since some of the lower areas of the song highlight this fact. It is at the bridge, however, where the song comes to life and Cook shows why he won the title in May.
Although it is a tiring comparison and many will be quick to dismiss it, "Light" is very similar to Daughtry's lead single "It’s Not Over." It is true that "Light" has a slower tempo, but its style and arrangement are in fact similar.
"Light On" is a promising start for David Cook, who should see a big career boost from the single's release leading up to his debut album, out Nov. 18.
"Light On" will be released to digital retailers including iTunes on Tues., Sept. 30 and goes for adds at Top 40 radio on Tues., Oct. 13. His debut album hits stores nationwide on Tues., Nov. 18.

Cook's "Light On" premieres on PopEater
Just days after being announced, David Cook's single "Light On" debuted on AOL's PopEater entertainment blog as reported earlier on Cook's Web site. The single, which was written by Soundgarden/Audioslave lead singer Chris Cornell and Brian Howes, was produced by Rob Cavallo. Listen to it below:
