'Idol' odds 'n ends: Season 10 auditions adds last-minute Los Angeles stop

The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:

>TMZ is reporting that Jennifer Lopez is back in the good graces of Simon Fuller and co., as she will most likely sign a deal next week that will permanently put her in the seat once held by Simon Cowell/Ellen DeGeneres.
Sources connected to the negotiations tell TMZ ... contrary to some news reports ... there has been no drama and no diva demands. As one source puts it, "It's been typical negotiating."
Well, I guess TMZ has been at the forefront with all the replacement judge drama, so this bit of info is probably as reliable as anything else out there. As to whether or not J. Lo is "the key to re-energizing the show," that is certainly still up to debate.

-------------------------------------------

>The nominations list for the 44th annual CMA Awards was revealed on Tuesday, and one Idol alum was able to score some nods as usual. Carrie Underwood is up for Female Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year for Play On. Although Carrie has a pretty good track record at these award shows, it looks to be Miranda Lambert's year, as she received a record nine nominations and looks to take home a lot of awards.

Still, it's good to know Carrie received more nods than Taylor Swift, who is only up for one category - FVotY. The 44th annual CMA Awards will air live on Wed., Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

-------------------------------------------

>Just as the disappointing Season 9 Idols Live! Tour concluded on Tuesday, Season 10's auditions have been extended to later this month when auditions will be held at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., on Wed., Sept. 22. Per Idol's website:
For the milestone 10th season of American Idol, we just couldn’t stay away from Idol’s hometown, Los Angeles, CA. In fact, this is the show’s sixth time holding hometown auditions in L.A. The goal during hometown auditions is to get a ticket Hollywood, and successful singers in L.A. won’t have to travel very far for the final round of auditions. Katharine McPhee, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, and Andrew Garcia are among the talented Idol stars from the City of Angels. L.A. is where the Idol finalists reside while competing for the prize, and it’s the place many Idol alumni settle to pursue their music career.
It's pretty interesting that the producers think adding a last-minute stop in LA of all places will help ensure we don't get another Season 9, since LA is one of the blandest, most uninteresting places to find talent. But whatever, if they want to attract teens from skipping school for the day, they're certainly free to do so.

-------------------------------------------

>Katharine McPhee has landed another role, this one in the horror pic Shark Night 3D. Other actors recently added to the cast include Sara Paxton (The Last House on the Left) and Dustin Milligan (Extract). Per DigitalSpy:
The trio will join the recently announced Sinqua Walls, Chris Carmack, Alyssa Diaz and Joel David Moore in the 3D horror movie.

The Final Destination and Snakes On A Plane helmer David R. Ellis is behind the camera for Shark Night, which centres on a group of people who are attacked by sharks while on vacation in the Louisiana Gulf area.
Well, at least it's not Piranha 3D. But Kat, is this really the best you could do? Shark movies never hold a candle to Jaws, and 3D is getting pretty tiring by now. Still, it's good to see she's continuing to get roles.

-------------------------------------------

>After only a few performances on Broadway in the musical In the Heights, Jordin Sparks injured her hip last Saturday during a show. She was understandably bummed, but like the pro that she is, she turned to Twitter to apologize to her fans and offer them a token of appreciation for coming out to see her:
"Thank you so much to everyone who came tonight. Sorry I couldn't sign. :( It's hard to stand/walk. Hopefully the physical therapist can fix me! :)

"If you'd like, you can send your playbills/tkts/pics w/ a stamped return envelope to the theatre & I'll get them back to you. Thank you for understanding. It means the world. Love you guys. <3"
Jordin is now back in tip-top shape and said she is "so attached to the cast & show already!"

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Fantasia meets up with Antwuan Cook after being released from hospital

The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:

>The latest news in the Fantasia saga is that merely one day after being released from a Charlotte, N.C., hospital for a drug overdose and suicide attempt, she had a meeting with her "off and on" boyfriend Antwuan Cook in a local park. Per an article on People.com:
The two were spotted visiting a local park and appeared to be in deep conversation – all while cameras, presumably for her VH1 reality show, Fantasia for Real, captured the conversation.
Additionally, the 911 call was made public:

To add to things, VH1 issued a statement that the first episode of Fantasia For Real's second season, which kicks off on Sun., Sept. 19, would be changed to accommodate the incident before retracting the statement. It may just be me, but all this is sounding pretty opportunistic, especially when considering Fanny's latest album hits stores in less than two weeks. Well, if her goal (and her manager's goal) was to get the public to remember her, they surely accomplished it this week (photo courtesy of People.com).

-------------------------------------------

>After all the drama that went down this week with reports that Jennifer Lopez is out of the running to replace Ellen DeGeneres or Simon Cowell as a judge for Season 10, good ol' Nigel Lythgoe interjected to smooth out the waves made by the rumors. Accoring to Uncle Nigel:
He tells Extra, "These people don't know Jennifer Lopez. She's a wonderful woman. I've never seen her be a diva in her life!"
Well, that's hardly a denial that J. Lo has been axed from consideration, but I guess it's better than a confirmation of the news - for Lopez at least.

-------------------------------------------

>Kimberly Caldwell will today appear at the AT&T store in Tustin, Calif., where she will perform in concert beginning at 1 p.m. She will then hang around to meet and greet fans until 3 p.m. More information on the event per the media advisory:

The store is located at 2219 Park Ave between Tustin Ranch and Park Avenue. Kimberly's debut album Without Regret will be released on Tues., Dec. 31, and is available to pre-order at Amazon.com.

>Jordin Sparks recently spent a day with a teen girl named Kyrie who devoted her time to charitable work with kids in Jamaica as part of Famous Footwear's "Famous for a Day" program. Watch the video below courtesy of Famous Footwear's official YouTube channel:

Jordin brought Kyrie 50 pair of shoes for the children of Jamaica in addition to hanging out with her for the day and inviting her backstage to a Jordin's concert. This isn't the first, nor will it be the last, of Jordin's charitable contributions.

-------------------------------------------

>Season 6 Top 16 contestant Asia'h Epperson is the latest Idol alum to land in hot water, at least legally, as she was arrested last night after allegedly beating up a clubgoer with her sister in Hollywood. Per TMZ:
According to sources, Epperson and another chick -- her sister -- kicked another clubgoer's butt inside Colony club.
TMZ's paps captured video of Asia'h with rapper Too Short (who?) earlier in the evening. She was released on bail early this morning. Why question is, why did TMZ have video of Asia'h before she was even arrested? Makes no sense. Either way, it's nice to see Season 6 is still being represented well.

Fantasia's manager issues statement on overdose incident

Fantasia's manager Brian Dickens has finally issued a full statement on Fantasia's alleged suicide attempt in the form of an overdose on aspirin and sleep aids. Courtesy of TMZ:

Fantasia has always been an open book. Honesty, self-respect, and personal responsibility are values she wears proudly.

Fantasia believed Mr. Cook when he told her he was not happy in his marriage and his heart was not in it. She believed him when he told her he and Mrs. Cook separated in the late summer of 2009. She believed Mr. Cook when he told her he lived elsewhere.

He even took her there. One of Mr. Cook’s most redeeming qualities was his complete devotion to his children. Fantasia fell in love with Mr. Cook and believed that he loved her.

Fantasia and Mr. Cook dated on and off for about eleven months. The pressure of the constant media attention was hard on their relationship. Fantasia gave inconsistent interviews about the status of her relationship with Mr. Cook because sometimes they were on and sometimes they were off.

When they were on, they spent most of their time together when she was not traveling with work.
Fantasia read Mrs. Cook’s Complaint against Mr. Cook for the first time yesterday. She knows some of the allegations in Mrs. Cook's complaint are totally false. There are others she strongly doubts. There is plenty she does not know.

Fantasia is heartbroken and is sorry for any pain she may have caused.

Yesterday, she was totally overwhelmed by the lawsuit and the media attention. Last night, Fantasia was hospitalized. She took an overdose of aspirin and a sleep aid.

Her injuries are not life threatening. She was dehydrated and exhausted at the time. Fantasia is stable now. She will be released from the hospital soon. Fantasia is a fighter and a survivor. This is not the hardest thing Fantasia has endured.

Fantasia will be stronger, smarter, and better for it. Her work has always inspired her and served as a source of strength. Her new album, “Back To Me,” will be released on August 24th.

The lyrics to “I’m Here” say it best:
“I Believe I Have Inside Of Me
Everything That I Need To Live A Bountiful Life
With All The Love Inside Of Me
I’ll Stand As Tall As The Tallest Tree
And I’m Thankful For Each Day That I’m Given
Both The Easy And The Hard Ones I’m Livin’
But Most Of All
Yes, I’m Thankful For Lovin’ Who I Really Am”

Fantasia sends her praise to God and her eternal gratitude to her fans, friends, and family.

God is good.
Interesting that the manager was able to squeeze in a mention of Fanny's upcoming album release, eh? Thankfully, it looks like she's going to be alright after all. Hopefully Fantasia continues to be an "open book" by explaining these actions in depth upon being released and cleaning herself up.

UPDATE: police report classifies Fantasia's overdose as "suicide attempt"

After a rough couple of days, Fantasia seems to have ended up in the hospital following an overdose. From TMZ:
Fantasia Barrino's rep has officially confirmed reports that the "American Idol" champ was rushed to a North Carolina hospital last night after a "medication overdose
This news comes after allegations of an affair with Antwuan Cook reignited last week when Cook's wife Paula singled Fanny out in a divorce petition that her involvement with Mr. Cook was the root of their breakup. The latest piece of the story is that a sex tape featuring Mr. Cook and Fanny exists.

UPDATE: Video from outside Fantasia's home has been obtained by Charlotte's NBC affiliate WCNC. The reporter said the police report classified the incident as an "suicide attempt":

Fantasia's third studio album, Back to Me, is set to hit stores in exactly two weeks. Her VH1 reality series Fantasia For Real will return on Sat., Oct. 2.

Of course, we all hope and pray things will turn out well for the Season 3 champ. Stay tuned for the latest developments on Fanny's saga.

Katelyn Epperly interjects herself in Ryan/Crystal drama

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding Ryan Seacrest and his abnormal behavoir this season, especially over the course of the past few weeks. Now the latest shoe to drop is Crystal Bowersox's accusation that she was "betrayed" by Ryan in reference to a story that TMZ broke over the weekend regarding her nearly quitting the show a few weeks ago.

Michelle Ruiz of ABCNews.com actually wrote an extensive piece on Ryan's antics, which cited a radio interview Season 9 semifinalist and early favorite Katelyn Epperly did with an Des Moines, Iowa-based station in which she made a text message sent from Crystal public. Per the article:
Epperley told the radio show that after she texted her friend Bowersox about her reported crisis, Bowersox responded with a text of her own, saying, "I'm fine…betrayed by Seacrest!"

Yikes. I'm guessing tonight we will hear Ryan and Crystal attempt to do some damage control, maybe in the form of a subtle conversation in the vein of "Oh I'm so happy to be here, I had a rough time a few weeks ago but I'm glad we were able to work things out blah blah blah..." Either way, Ryan's behavior is not going unnoticed, and whether it has to do with an attempt at boosting ratings during this awful season or maybe perhaps Ryan has finally caught a case of Simon's boredom, people will continue to talk about it until Ryan lays off the caffeine and gets some sleep.

Maybe the new TV king has finally reached his limit.

Fantasia on self-imposed lockdown after hate mail

What's going on with Fantasia? After missing shows in the Los Angeles production of The Color Purple the musical thanks to inflammation of her vocal cords, it seems she has more troubles as security has been beefed up around the Pantages Theater thanks to a piece of hate mail she received from an interesting individual. Per TMZ:

Fantasia's manager tells us Barrino became alarmed over a disturbing letter loaded with racial slurs -- including the n-word -- and a line that read, "go back where you came from and die."

We're told the person who wrote the letter claims he used to work as a security guard for Fox while Fantasia was on "A.I."
This is another strange development in the life of the third season's winner, and really comes out of nowhere. It's good to know security is taking this threat seriously.

'Idol' odds 'n ends: New 'Idol' commercial hits airwaves

>FOX began airing a new promo for the ninth season of American Idol this week. Watch it below:

Considering it's FOX, this TV spot isn't all that bad. Still, if there was ever a show that could make a splash with a cheesy ad, Idol's definitely got that title. Expect to see this in heavy rotation in the coming week, especially during football games.

>Amazon.com posted a behind the scenes video of Katharine McPhee on the online retailer's page for her forthcoming album Unbroken (Jan. 5, 2010) called "To NYC and Back: It's a Wrap." In the video, Katharine is shown filming her video for "Had It All," recording in the studio and just goofing off in general. Watch the video below:

Katharine had a busy week, as she spent two hours of her time on Wednesday at one of the "12 Stops of Christmas" by the 5 Buck Music Truck in LA. Proceeds from the event benefited City of Hope, a research, treatment and education center for cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

>Jennifer Hudson's Christmas special Jennifer Hudson: I'll Be Home For Christmas aired Monday night on ABC, marking the second Idol-related holiday special to air on network television in one week. The special featured Jennifer returning to her hometown of Chicago, where she performed at various spots throughout the one-hour program. Watch the first part of the special below:

Some of the songs Jennifer performed include "This Christmas," "Silent Night" and a duet of "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" with Michael Buble. Jennifer also briefly mentioned her family tragedy and how now more than ever it's important for her family to stay close this Christmas.

>The latest issue of SELF magazine features Carrie Underwood on the cover in addition to an inside story on a host of topics, one of which is a future family. Carrie says:
“Not that I have a husband to have one with yet, but someday I’d like a family—not a big one, but not a small one either. Two kids is good; three is fine. Four? Somebody’s getting something done, because we ain’t having five!"
The issue will be available for purchase nationwide on Tues., Dec. 22.

>Kris Allen is an unlikely target for the paparazzi, but they managed to catch up with him the other day to pester him with questions about none other than...Tiger Woods? Watch the clip below to hear everything in context:

Good for Kris not giving the photogs anything to make a story out of despite keeping a smile on his face, which is a tactic that will serve him well in the future.

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Kris Allen, Jordin Sparks to perform at Z100's Jingle Ball tonight

The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:

>Tonight marks the biggest Jingle Ball of all, as New York City's Z100 Jingle Ball takes place at Madison Square Garden. Among the list of artists are none other than Kris Allen and Jordin Sparks. Other artists scheduled to perform include Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Boys Like Girls. More content on the Jingle Ball can be found on Madison Square Garden's official site including photos and video from past shows with other Idol alums.

Last night at another Jingle Ball hosted by fellow clear channel station, Boston's Kiss 108, Bieber helped Jordin out on "No Air," as he sang Chris Brown's part of the duet. Watch a bad-quality fan video below:

Jordin will next perform at the Y100 Jingle Ball in Miami tomorrow night, which will be co-hosted by Adam Lambert.

>Speaking of Adam, he was busy this week being named one of Barbara Walters's "10 Most Fascinating People of 2009," an annual TV special that aired on ABC Wednesday night. His segment lasted about two and a half minutes and can be viewed below:

Adam's interview and performance of "Whataya Want From Me" on The View also aired this week in which he said his "Dreidel spins the other way."

>While getting paid an insane amount to perform in the Cove Atlantis resort in the Bahamas last weekend, Carrie Underwood was caught by TMZ's cameras on Monday while she was relaxing on the beach. Watch below:

Carrie always seems to gain attention when she's out on the beach. Wonder why?

>In other Carrie news, she announced her 2010 tour promoting her latest album Play On. The tour will kick off on Thurs., March 11, at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pa., and will conclude on Sun., May 30, at the Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash. Opening acts include Craig Morgan and Sons of Sylvia, the later of whom helped out Carrie on her track "What Can I Say." Billboard has a full list of dates and destinations.

>Jessica Sierra became the latest parent in the Idol world, as she gave birth to Kayden Cash Sierra on Sat., Dec. 5, at UCLA Medical Center. She told RadarOnline.com:
"Things happen in life, and don't let your past get you down. You can always overcome -- you can overcome anything you want to and be a better person. Don't let people tell you that you can't."
The baby's father is apparently an ex-boyfriend. IDOL LIVE wishes Jessica the best in her new role as mother.

Fantasia, Michael Sarver pestered by TMZ

An Idol winner and a contestant currently seeking the title of "Idol winner" today were each caught in the cross hairs by TMZ. Fantasia was on her way to catch a flight when she was asked about her new "assets" and her house woes among other things (all the while said in a boastful tone), while Michael Sarver was tracked down walking with Dancing with the Stars dancer Mark Ballas in downtown Hollywood. Watch Fanny's exchange below:

After seeing that, it's amazing to think she was actually named the winner of Season 3. As for Michael's video, it has recently gone MIA (per a request submitted by 19E, no doubt), but the gist of it was that Michael smartly ignored the paparazzo's questions except to say his wife made him blush when he was asked if Paula makes him blush.

Tomorrow's 'Idol' press conference rendered meaningless

Idol execs were eagerly awaiting tomorrow's press conference in which they would outline the all-new developments and changes to the show's eighth season, that is until TMZ spoiled it for everyone on Friday.

So Season 8 will include the following:

>The shortening of auditions to three weeks, while Hollywood will have two weeks (so far so good).

>A swelling of the semifinal rounds, from a Top 24 to a Top 36 (could be good).

>The re-introduction of a wild card round (coming five seasons too late, but ah well).

>The slashing of "Idol Gives Back" (a positive side effect of the disastrous economic situation).

>Showing more "behind the scenes" footage to show who the contestants "really are" (didn't ABC have a show like that that lasted four episodes?)

>The addition of Kara DioGuardi (already knew this months ago).

Looks like FOX should keep an eye on who has access to its internal memos.

Paula & 'Idol' execs not sharing holiday cheer

It looks like Paula is trying her hardest to make this season season of Idol her last as a judge. TMZ is reporting that Idol execs told Paula to tone down her loud chastising of them while making stops on her recent press junket to promote her jewelry.

The latest development according to the gossip site is that Paula was told to "put a lid on her feud" with the show's producers prior to her appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman last night.

Things started to go sour publicly yesterday when Paula told Barbara Walters in an interview on Sirius' XM Radio that producers did not heed her warnings of the consequences of letting her crazed fan/stalker, Paula Goodspeed, make it to TV time on Idol. She said:

"It's fun for them to cause me stress. This was something that would make good television."
This caused a certain famous former producer to fire back, with Nigel Lythgoe telling People.com:
"The very fact that this happened, I'm really sad for her family. It happened about four weeks ago. For it to come back four weeks later, I'm really sad we're still talking about it."
Sure, Nigel. The only reason you're sad that it's still being discussed is because it makes you and your crew look bad. The longer it stays in the public domain, the worse things will be for Idol producers' reputations.

As a result of this latest Paulaversey, look for an announcement of Paula's intentions to leave the show to come midway into the eighth season. Considering all the times it seemed Paula was about to get the axe, it's kind of sad it had to happen this way.

Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother killed

Jennifer Hudson's mother, Darnell Donnerson, and brother, Jason, were reportedly found dead at the singer's home in Chicago at 2:44 p.m. according to multiple sources. Their bodies were found with multiple gunshot wounds. Jennifer's 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, is reportedly missing.

The Associated Press has not yet received a response to an e-mail that was sent to Hudson's personal publicist, and no statement has been issued from Jennifer, her label or management.

According to TMZ, an AMBER alert went out for Jennifer's nephew. Police are telling people to look out for a 1994 white Suburban with the license plate X584859. There has been no word on whom the suspects are at this point.

IDOL LIVE is praying for Jennifer and her family during these trying times.

Kevin Covais' mystery illness saga continues

As reported earlier this month by IDOL LIVE, Season 5's 11th-place finalist Kevin Covais was admitted to a hospital for an undisclosed illness. Rumors began swirling that Kevin had possibly had a stroke, but his publicist, Cindy Collins later brushed them off, instead insisting he had suffered complications from his diabetes.

The story regained traction yesterday when TMZ.com reported that Kevin was "cooped up in the hospital" with Bell's palsy, a condition that results in partial paralysis of the face. But Kevin's publicist once again tried to disspell that report. According to a story from Newsday, Collins

"...would not say what was ailing the 19-year-old. 'We cannot officially say either way until tests are done,' Collins said from Los Angeles.

The TMZ story reported that the illness was brought on 'because of the stress of his press tour' for the raunchy comedy flick. But Collins said, 'For the record, Kevin was not stressed out. It was a blast, it was the highlight of his week.'"
This obviously is not the last we've heard of Kevin's mystery illness. Whatever the true cause is, IDOL LIVE wishes him a quick and painless recovery.

College enters theatres nationwide on Friday. It also stars Drake Bell and Andrew Caldwell.

Nigel out of the driver's seat

TMZ.com is reporting producer Nigel Lythgoe is no longer associated with American Idol. The reason? Boredom, apparently:

We're told Lythgoe felt it was time for someone else to step in. Sources say he's said privately he is "not passionate about it anymore." "A.I.'s" ratings slipped last season, and the show was getting a little boring.
TMZ goes on to say he is focusing on a joint venture with Idol creator/manager Simon Fuller and wants to focus on his other hit show, So You Think You Can Dance. Although Nigel has also been a punching bag for when things have gone wrong with the show (and he often brought it upon himself), this does not bode very well for the show itself. It's not like Simon Cowell is leaving, but noteworthy nonetheless.

No word on a possible replacement, or whether TMZ is even telling the truth.

ETA: looks like this is 100% true. Per a statement made by Nigel himself:
"Due to the huge success of 'So You Think You Can Dance,' my summer will be taken up by travels to South Africa, Australia and Canada to work on local versions of the show. I will step back from my day-to-day producing work on 'American Idol' and will be devoting my time to a new venture with Simon Fuller. I have very much enjoyed my personal and professional relationship with Simon. He is without doubt, a man of vision, and I look forward to partnering with him on new and exciting challenges in all forms of entertainment."
This is definitely a blow to the Idol franchise. It is still a little baffling that he would ditch the most-watched show on all television to promote SYTYCD of all things, but if it's his decision, it's his decision.

Clay impregnates a woman?

According to TMZ.com, Clay Aiken is going to be a father. But he did not go and do it the old fashioned way, his sperm was artificially inseminated into Jaymes Foster, a 50-year-old record producer and sister of David Foster that has worked on Clay's albums. Clay, 29, is said to be best friends with Foster.

So what exactly is this? A publicity stunt to jump start sales of his sinking album, On My Way Here, which has sold 127k copies to date? A way to dispel the gay rumors once and for all? Or just an honest gesture for a friend in need? No one knows, and Clay's reps aren't talking.

David A.'s dad banned from backstage

The Associated Press yesterday reported that David Archuleta's father, Jeff, has been told by producers that he can no longer join his son backstage before he performs on Idol.

The story, which was originally broke on TMZ.com, has been building since the beginning of the competition, as Jeff Archuleta has been called a "stage dad" multiple times and rumors of bad blood between him and David have surfaced. Things finally came to a head when Jeff insisted David include a verse of Sean Kingston's song "Beautiful Girls" during his performance of "Stand By Me" on Top 4 night, which ended up costing Idol more money due to rights needed to include the verse.

There has been no comment from either FOX nor Jeff.
