Analysis: Joanna Pacitti a "failed pop star"?

Well, it looks like Yahoo! is no fan of 23-year-old Season 8 hopeful Joanna Pacitti. The headline "Failed pop star pollutes 'Idol'" today appeared on the famed web portal, followed by an incredible hack job on Joanna by "Reality Rocks" blogger Lyndsey Parker, in which she was compared to Season 7's sixth-place finalist, Carly Smithson. Read an excerpt of Parker's blog below:

Anyway, I honestly can NOT believe the AmIdol producers are up to their old sneaky tricks in season 8. You'd think after all that Carly hullaballoo, they would steer clear of such blatant favoritism and the inclusion of what are known in the Idol blogosphere as "plants." But...no. Along with an actual (Archuleta-associated!) Osmond and Jason Castro's little brother, this season features a particularly poisonous plant: Joanna Pacitti.

Joanna, who auditioned on Wednesday night's Louisville episode, is basically Carly 2.0.
Parker continued to "expose" Joanna's past by unearthing music videos, an album and other projects that she has worked on in the past.

Now, I believe the situation we have here is extremely different from last season's fiasco. Did Parker not watch the Louisville auditions Wednesday night? Did the producers not blatantly make it known to us viewers that Joanna had a past with A&M Records et al? The situation with Carly was extremely different because the producers tried to keep her past failures in the music biz under wraps (which they have now learned can never happen because someone is going to dig it up).

So although I am very critical of Joanna being included for her past, as I myself have never liked the whole plant aspect that has developed on the show over the past few seasons, I am willing to let her prove herself before crying fowl. I give the producers credit for at least putting everything out in the open.

But "polluting 'Idol'"? C'mon Parker, that's harsh.

"No Air" comes in at #1, says omg!

The "On The Download" section of Yahoo's omg! pop blog listed its Top 5 favorite album and Top 8 favorite single downloads of 2008, and Jordin Sparks' duet with Chris Brown, "No Air," landed at the top spot of the singles list. See the blog's entire singles list below:

1) "No Air" - Jordin Sparks feat. Chris Brown
2) "American Boy" -- Estelle feat. Kanye West
3) "Viva La Vida" -- Coldplay
4) "Leavin'" -- Jesse McCartney
5) "Right Here (Departed)" -- Brandy
6) "Bleeding Love" -- Leona Lewis
7) "That's Not My Name" -- The Ting Tings
8) "A-Punk" -- Vampire Weekend

There is no explanation on how this list was generated, it kind of just looks like it was thrown together with quotas for six big hits and two more obscure/indie releases. But either way it's nice to see Jordin at #1 no matter what kind of countdown.

The yawn heard 'round the world

So in case anyone missed it on Wednesday, Jason Castro was caught yawning as the camera panned to backstage as Ryan was about to send us to a commercial break, where he awaited his fate alongside Brooke White, Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson. Apparently it is a sign of disrespect or just downright rude to yawn during American Idol, as major news outlets picked up the story.

Although Jason's personality seems to give off a sense of unwillingness (more like a disinterest) to be on the show, in his defense, he would not have auditioned had he not wanted to be on in the first place. He may not win, but landing in the Top 5 is as good an outcome as anyone could hope for. But as for Yahoo! and those other newsertainment outlets, there are more earth-shattering stories to report on.

And Jason, it's alright. I didn't know a cat sang it either.
