It was a wipeout in IDOL LIVE's 2010 edition of the poll of the week champion series, as readers were asked which 12th (or 13th)-place finalist is their favorite of all nine seasons.
It was most likely due to lack of participation that David Hernandez garnered 72% of all votes cast, which equates to 13 of the 18 votes. No other finalist managed to get more than one vote (5%), which suggests no 12th/13th-place finisher has a solid fan base.
Regardless, David will advance to the final round of the champion series, which we will revisit once all other placements are decided. In the next round, readers will be asked which 11th-place finalist is their favorite of all nine seasons. Voting will be open for exactly one week.

Tonight the Top 11 finalists take on songs that have landed at #1 on the esteemed Billboard Hot 100 chart, not the horrid "teen idol" theme that was originally misreported elsewhere. Therefore, it is only fitting that Miley Cyrus will serve as the contestants' mentor. Right?

Poll of the week: David Archuleta defeats all competitors in champion series finale
After fourteen weeks of competition, IDOL LIVE's annual poll of the week champion series edition has come to a close, with David Archuleta taking the top spot following a two-week voting period finale that consisted of a whopping 10 alums from the series' seventh season.
As expected, Arch took the cake with 11,595 votes, reeling in 64% of the total votes cast. Arch's only real competition was David Cook, who netted 6,257 votes, or 34% of all votes. These results are flipped in comparison to last year's results, when Cook took in 82% and Arch was able to amass only 17% of the votes.
Not surprisingly, none of the other Idol alums that were up for voting from the semifinal rounds were able to take in a single percentage of the votes cast, with Kellie Pickler finishing an extremely distant third with 90 votes.
After all these months of voting, it should be recognized that all the contributions from readers that have participated in these polls are truly appreciated and it is hoped that this participation will continue to shine through as we carry on with regularly scheduled polls of the week. In this week's edition of the poll of the week, readers are asked which celebrity guest judge would they prefer take Paula Abdul's spot if the spot is to be filled. You have exactly one week to vote.

Poll of the week: Arch winning at halfway point
It's the halfway point for IDOL LIVE's poll of the week champion series, and it has predictably come down to a battle of the Davids for the second straight year. The difference between now and the same poll last year is the Archies seem to be taking the poll more seriously than their Word Nerd counterparts.
David Archuleta is currently in the lead with nearly 9,000 votes, compared to David Cook's total thus far of just over 6,000 votes. Although things started with a bang in the first few days of voting, it seems that the fans' fingers have slowed down in recent days. Maybe everyone is soaking up their last few weeks (or in some cases, days) of summer vacation?
One point that should be reiterated is that each visitor of IDOL LIVE should only be able to vote once per day. However, this does not mean there aren't ways around this restriction. This Idol poll veteran is very well aware of the whole cookie-deleting process that is often used in these polls, and if that works to your advantage, then great. If not, that is out of my control.
So with just one week left to vote before the poll closes, here's to hoping the fan bases of finalists other than the Davids find this poll and continue to make things interesting.

Poll of the week: David Hernandez kicks off champion series with a win
For the first installment of the second annual IDOL LIVE poll of the week champion series, David Hernandez was the recipient of the title of favorite 13/12th-place finalist of all eight seasons (or all seven seasons that had a Top 12/13).
The seventh season's 12-place finisher scored 21 votes, good for 39% of the 53 votes cast. The next closest finalist was Jorge Nunez of Season 8, as the Puerto Rican contestant garnered 13 votes (24%). Right behind him was his season mate Jasmine Murray, who took in a total of seven votes (13%).
As the winner of this round, David will be back in a few months to vie for the finals of the champion poll series where he will take on much tougher competition.

IDOL LIVE Blog: Top 10 Perform (3/25/09)

IDOL LIVE's Top 10 most memorable moments of 2008 - Part 1
IDOL LIVE has compiled a list of the 10 most memorable moments of 2008 in relation to everything Idol. Everything from joy to tragedy, odd to oddly a big deal are included in the countdown. The bottom five moments are listed below:
10) Jordin Sparks makes waves at MTV's Video Music Awards
Jordin Sparks had a big year in terms of success and opportunities to wow audiences, from her Grammy nomination to the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XLII. One of her more contentious moments, however, was when she came to the defense of The Jonas Brothers at MTV's 2008 Video Music Awards after host Russell Brand lambasted them in his opening monologue for promising chastity until marriage.
Jordin retorted when it was her turn to present an award, saying that people wear purity rings because "not everyone wants to be a slut," which set off a firestorm of praise and criticism on from everyone, whether on morning shows, blogs or mainstream media outlets. Jordin eventually appeared on FOX News Channel's Hannity & Colmes to clarify her statement.
09) Contestants' pasts come back to haunt them
2008 was the year that the term "plant" took on a whole new meaning. As soon as the Top 24 was announced, stories emerged on certain contestants' musical backgrounds, many of whom had previously been signed to major label deals and released albums. Carly Smithson was the largest target after it was revealed that she only managed to sell 300 copies of her album Ultimate High while on MCA Records as Carly Hennessy despite a $2 million promotional price tag.
Other finalists that had record deals before joining the show with either major or indie labels were Kristy Lee Cook, Michael Johns, Brooke White and David Cook, while some like David Archuleta had appeared on talent shows like Star Search.
And then there was David Hernandez, whose stripper past overshadowed his short stay on Idol in similar fashion to the media's fascination with Antonella Barba's racy pics from last year.
If history is any indication, we are only going to see more of the same with the next crop of hopefuls.
08) Michael Johns ousted in "cruel shocker" on "Idol Gives Back"
Australia's Michael Johns was considered by many to be the frontrunner for the title of American Idol winner 2008. But when it came time for the results to be read on "Idol Gives Back" night, everyone seemed to be doubting the warning issued from Ryan that someone would indeed be leaving, unlike the "surprise" that kept Jordin Sparks from going home the same night the previous year (although Jordin did not have the lowest vote totals anyway and was never in danger).
But when the results were read and Ryan held out the possibility that once again the lowest vote-getter would be spared, it was like a dagger to the heart for many fans when he said that Michael would indeed by leaving. This generated much criticism of Ryan from the media for being "cruel." While the fact that Michael was ousted when he was did not put this moment on the countdown on its own, the way it was carried out by all those involved and the circumstances were enough to make this the eighth most memorable Idol moment of 2008.
07) Big changes announced for Season 8
After signs that America's #1 show was waning in popularity became too blatant to ignore, the executives behind Idol announced some sizable changes for the upcoming season of the show, beginning with the firing/departure of executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.
Lythgoe's exit was followed closely by Kara DioGuardi's entrance, as the songwriter was hired as a fourth judge. More substantial changes to the show were announced in December, with the establishment of a Top 36 instead of a Top 24, the bringing back of the popular Wildcard round and the slashing of the "Idol Gives Back" special.
Hopefully these changes are enough to reignite the spark that has been slowly waning in regards to the excitement factor of the show.
06) Paula Abdul flubs her lines on Idol
It was the single most horrific train wreck Idol had ever seen (until Fantasia's screamfest of a performance a few weeks later). Paula Abdul mysteriously critiqued Jason Castro's second song before he had even sung it, sending the contestants, the judges and the millions watching at home into a frenzied confusion. Apparently Paula could not handle the quick adaptations television can prompt its stars to make when under the gun of fitting everything into an hour or two.
But it caused more than just a brief bit of confusion. It reignited the long held suspicion by many that Idol is in fact rigged. Even after many apologies were issued by Paula, her coworkers and the show's execs, there still lingered a feeling that all was not right in the state of California. But just as it has done with the countless other controversies that have emerged, the show weathered the storm and more or less so did Paula's seemingly bulletproof reputation. It is going to take a lot to finally bring her down.

Keeping up with Chikezie
Chikezie has come a long way since being called "jacuzzi" by Simon on the seventh season of Idol. The 23-year-old fan-turned-fan favorite of the show is currently touring with fellow Idol alums Diana DeGarmo, Kimberley Locke and season mate David Hernandez in Michael Orland's production of "American Stars in Concert for the Holidays," which runs nationwide until Dec. 21.
The four of them appeared on CBS' Saturday edition of The Early Show on Nov. 29, where Chikezie performed a duet with Kimberley of "Last Christmas." He will next appear with them on The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet on Fri., Dec. 12.
Aside from the tour, Chikezie has stated he is working on a solo album that should be due out sometime in 2009. His debut single will be "I Have Dreams."

'Idol' Christmas tour hits Athens (Georgia, that is)
The four Idol alums that are currently taking part in Michael Orland's "American Stars in Concert for the Holidays" rolled into Athens, Ga., last night, where they are also performing tonight at the Classic Center.
The tour has already passed through Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Sugar Loaf, N.Y., El Paso, Tx., Easton, Pa. and Englewood, N.J. Below is a fan video of Diana DeGarmo, Kimberley Locke, Chikezie and David Hernandez performing in a medley of Christmas songs:
The tour has been generating positive reviews but has been pulling in lackluster crowds with the exception of last night, when there was nearly a sold-out house (most likely because the area is Diana's home turf).
The crew will make their next nationally televised appearance on The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet on Fri., Dec. 12.

Diana DeGarmo, David Hernandez, Kimberley Locke and Chikezie stopped by The Saturday Early Show on CBS yesterday to promote their "American Stars for the Holidays" tour, which launched last night. Watch Diana and David perform "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" below:
To close out the show, Kimberley and Chikezie sang "Last Christmas." The 15-city tour last night kicked off in Milwaukee and wraps up in Waukegan, Ill., on Dec. 21.

>FOX launched a one-minute ad on television promoting the eighth season of Idol, which began running yesterday. The ad features David Cook and his "sweet dreams" of victory in addition to including a clip of "Light On" playing in the background.
>Four Idol alums will perform on the CBS Saturday Early Show tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Chikezie, David Hernandez, Diana DeGarmo and Kimberley Locke will perform a song from their Christmas concert that kicked off today in Milwaukee.
>Eight Idol alums will band together to tour the nation in the IDOL Mania Live concert series. The tour kicks off Sat., Dec. 6 at the Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla. On the tour will be: Blake Lewis, Gina Glocksen, Justin Guarini, LaKisha Jones, Melissa McGhee, Mikalah Gordon, Rickey Smith and Vonzell Solomon.

IDOL LIVE poll of the week - Melissa McGhee's got it
Melissa McGhee lost on the fifth season of Idol as soon as she made it to the Top 12, but she did win this week's poll of the week with a resounding four votes, good for 33 percent. Out of an embarrassing total of 12 votes, the next closest competitor was Season 7's David Hernandez, taking 3 votes (25%).

VFTW nets $40K in 2007
Only halfway through the seventh season of American Idol, the infamous Votefortheworst.com (VFTW) has made the headlines for its unconventional approach to the hit FOX show and breaking news many times since the start of 2008. In today's New York Times, however, the site's founder, Dave Della Terza, was profiled. The reason for giving Della Terza a valuable spot on the Times' layout: the revelation that the controversial site netted him roughly $40,000 in revenue in 2007.
Terza said the revenue came mostly from Google Ads, and it has been gaining every year since the site's inception in 2005. Della Terza told the Times the following:
"It didn’t start out as a moneymaking venture; it wasn’t an attempt to leech off the ‘American Idol’ brand."
VFTW's most notable story leaks include the controversial photos of season 6 semifinalist Antonella Barba and news that season 7 finalist David Hernandez had worked as a stripper in the past. The site is currently encouraging members to vote for Amanda Overmyer.

Unexpected but understandable
Looking back on last night's results, it is amazing that more people did not predict David Hernandez would in fact be the one sent packing. The overwhelming majority of viewers believed Kristy Lee Cook's ear-offending country arrangement of "Eight Days a Week" was more than enough to seal her fate, but once again the country vote was underestimated.
In recent seasons past, the "obvious" boot left in Top 12 week (Melissa McGhee in Season 5 and Brandon Rogers in Season 6 - both of whom delivered sub-par performances including forgotten lyrics). In this case, however, David had all the makings of a Top 12 finisher, from his forgettable rendition of "I Saw Her Standing There" that was filled to the brim with melisma, to his weak attempt to distract the American public from his stripper past by laughing about being fired as a pizza deliveryman (as if it was his only previous job) in his pre-performance package Tuesday night.
Some want to believe his ouster was a conspiracy to keep David from making the tour, but that is simply not true. If all of the performances are scrutinized at the same level, it is easy to see that although his performance was not the worst, it was far from the best.
On another note, Season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee returned to the Idol stage for the first time since losing the title to Taylor Hicks two years ago. She sang the George Harrison-penned "Something," and was accompanied by producer David Foster. Following the performance, Foster confirmed rumors that the two have been working on an album together, but no other details were revealed.
As for whether or not Kristy Lee can recover in time for next week when she must decide how to approach a second helping of Lennon-McCartney songs after receiving resounding disapproval over this week's country arrangement, it is fair to say that anything could happen at this point.

Beatles night shows competition is still fluid
Besides the tired infighting between the judges, Ryan's usual flirting with Simon and a new monstrous set, the Top 12 for the most part managed to take control of the 25 limited Lennon-McCartney songs they had to choose from.
The show opened up on a forgettable note when Syesha Mercado tackled "Got to Get You Into My Life." Although the vocal wasn't all that bad, it really was very lifeless despite her use of the Earth, Wind and Fire arrangement. The arrangement factor truly played a big role in the night, as it made or broke many of the finalists' performances. In Chikezie's case, his folk-turned-southern rock interpretation of "She's a Woman" really validated why he was still in the competition, and his performance was actually one of the better ones. Carly Smithson also pulled off another surprise, as she put her special touch on "Come Together," one of her favorite songs. The sound was very reminiscent of something Sheryl Crow would do, and she won much praise from the judges. But in Kristy Lee Cook's case, the arrangement led to her downfall, as "Eight Days a Week" was never intended to be sung in an up-tempo country style.
While the arrangements were important factors in many performances, other finalists' vocals defined how well they did. In Ramiele Malubay's instance, her vocals on "In My Life" were pretty but too reserved, which garnered criticism from the judges that she played it "too safe." David Hernandez gave the word "melisma" a whole new meaning when he took on "I Saw Her Standing There," which also brought forth a barrage of calls to not overdo it, and even David declared he would "try to turn it down a notch" next week (if there is a next week).
Two consistent performers did even better tonight than in weeks prior. Coffee shop soul/pop chanteuse Brooke White delivered a knockout punch with a beautiful rendition of "Let It Be." Her talents on the piano coupled with her rich vocals really give her an under the radar frontrunner status. The other finalist that was on top of his game was David Cook. After he delivered a stellar rocked-out version of the Lionel Richie classic "Hello" last week, David again channeled Chris Daughtry in his performance of "Eleanor Rigby." He received praise from the judges as being a dark horse, with Simon even toying with the possibility of an outside shot of him winning.
Proving that falsettos should only be used every once in a while, Jason Castro's version of "If I Fell" gave Paula a heartfelt connection, but his vocals were otherwise very vulnerable and showed his style of singing definitely has limits. Amanda Overmyer was also only lukewarm this week after she nailed her song last week, which was possibly the only reason she made it through. Her take on "You Can't Do That" was a certified, signature rock 'n roll nurse performance, though it was not nearly as bad as some of her past ones. Michael Johns also was only so-so once again, as he sang "Across the Universe" well but didn't really go anywhere with it, which drew the ire of both Simon and Randy.
But the biggest shock of the entire night was hands down David Archuleta's awful Stevie Wonder version of "We Can Work It Out." The favorite to win did everything from forgetting the lyrics to losing his meter and missing some key notes. If this was the first time the American public saw him perform, David would be on the first flight back to Utah. But his dedicated fanbase and history of amazing performances will be more than enough to sail him through to next week.
