The Grammys really helped one Idol-related album as evidenced by the most recent edition of HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart.
Grammy Award-winning country artist Carrie Underwood saw her hugely successful album Play On surge 76% to 32.1k copies for the week, up 13 spots to #29. Maybe the album itself will do well at the Grammys in 2011?
And Adam Lambert's For Your Entertainment was the only other Idol-related entry on the chart, as it was down #38-46 and 6% sales-wise to 13.5k. It has now passed the gold mark but will most likely struggle to reach the next bench mark.

Poll of the week: Carrie Underwood favored for Grammys
In IDOL LIVE's special Grammy Award edition of the poll of the week, the majority of readers correctly predicted Carrie Underwood would have the best chance at taking home an award.
Carrie was the only Idol alum to take home a golden gramophone at last night's 52nd annual awards ceremony, although she arguably had the least competition to contend with in the "Best Country Collaboration With Vocals" category. 58% of those polled went with Carrie, while 41% sided with Kelly Clarkson, whose fourth album All I Ever Wanted lost out to The Black Eyed Peas' latest release in the "Best Pop Vocal Album."
In the next edition of the poll of the week, readers as asked who they think should replace Simon Cowell as the fourth judge on Idol following his departure at the end of the current season. Voting will be open until next Wednesday (Feb. 10).

52nd Annual Grammy Awards wrap-up
It wasn't the best night for Idol alums at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Although there was only one win by an Idol alum (Carrie Underwood's "I Told You So" duet with Randy Travis for the "Best Country Collaboration With Vocals" category), there was a nice showing by Carrie and Jennifer Hudson in the 3D tribute to Michael Jackson in which they sang "Earth Song" alongside Celine Dion, Usher and Smokey Robinson. Watch the performance below (and beware: you won't see much if you don't have those ridiculous 3D glasses):
As for my predictions, I went 2-5. I'm still in disbelief that Taylor Swift's "White Horse" beat out Carrie's "Just a Dream" in the "Best Female Country Vocal Performance" category. That's tragic.
Aside from the boring show itself, there were a ton of alums to go around actually at the show, many of whom appeared on the red carpet. As usual, Ryan Seacrest was on hand to do red carpet coverage for E in addition to presenting. He caught up with many including Carrie, Jennifer and Kara DioGuardi. Also in attendance was Adam Lambert, who got roasted Stephen Colbert at the beginning of the night.
All in all a very Idol-deserted affair.
IDOL LIVE predix: Alums at the Grammys
It's that time of year once again when the music industry does its best to highlight the brightest spots of the previous year in music. Although the Grammys are notorious for offering up a few surprises, especially in the big" categories," it's a good bet this time around will be pretty straight forward.
The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards will be about one young artist - Taylor Swift. Expect her to sweep in the coveted Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year categories in addition to some country and a few pop categories.
Just like last year, I'm taking a stab at how Idol alums will fare tonight. My predictions are below:
Best Pop Vocal Album: The Black Eyed Peas, The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies)
Kelly Clarkson definitely deserves the nomination for her fourth album All I Ever Wanted, and many will argue the album deserves the win. But this category will be reserved as a place to make up for The Black Eyed Peas not taking home a statue in some of the bigger categories. Therefore, it seems likely that their multi-platinum The E.N.D. will triumph this time around. Still, many media outlets are calling this for Kelly, so there could still be some good surprises tonight.
Best Female Country Vocal Performance: Carrie Underwood, "Just A Dream"
Swift will be bringing home a whole lotta gold tonight, but the "Best Female Country Vocal Performance" category will not have her name reserved on the winner's envelope. Her "White Horse" entry was not as well-known as some of her more popular singles, and Carrie Underwood's #1 "Just a Dream" hasn't really had the chance to win her some hardware. Add to this the fact that Carrie is a perennial favorite to win at the Grammys and things look bright for her going into tonight.
Best Country Collaboration With Vocals: Brad Paisley & Keith Urban, "Start a Band"
Since Carrie should be victorious in "Female Country Vocal Performance," the fact that she and Randy Travis will lose out here shouldn't be too hard to stomach. Brad Paisley and Keith Urban won for "Start a Band" at last year's Academy of Country Music Awards, and they are good bets to repeat tonight.
Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album: Jeremy Camp, Speaking Louder Than Before
Admittedly this category is hard for me to gauge, and even though Mandisa's Freedom is a great album, it seems unlikely that she will be recognized for this LP over the more commercially successful Speaking Louder Than Before. Therefore, it appears her record at the Grammys will be extended to 0-2.
Best Musical Show Album: David Caddick & David Lai, producers (Leonard Bernstein, composer; Stephen Sondheim, lyricist) (New Broadway Cast with Matt Cavenaugh, Josefina Scaglione & Others), West Side Story
The last category isn't so much a referendum on the Idol alums attached to their respective entry (Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis on the 30th anniversary cast recording of Ain't Misbehavin') as it is the popularity of the shows themselves. That said, West Side Story is a classic that has always received widespread accolades, and the recent revival has been a success, so it only seems fitting it takes this category.
Even though I don't have every Idol alum nominated taking home a Grammy, I hope I'm wrong on the ones I don't have confidence in. It's always good to seem alums recognized for their work in the industry. And it'll be worth tuning in just to see Carrie and Jennifer Hudson partake in the tribute to Michael Jackson.

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood among 2010 Grammy Award nominees
Tonight's Grammy Award Nomination Concert on CBS lacked any mention of anything Idol (with the exception of second-long clips of Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry singing along in a montage of The Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" and a clip of Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone" music video), there were a few nominations for alums of the franchise, which can be seen below:
Best Pop Vocal Album - All I Ever Wanted, Kelly Clarkson
Best Female Country Vocal Performance - "Just A Dream," Carrie Underwood
Best Country Collaboration With Vocals - "I Told You So," Carrie Underwood & Randy Travis

Although there seem to be less Idol nominees this year than last, it's always good to see at least some thrown in the mix. Still, the fact that none are represented in the major categories is a little disappointing.

'Idol' BB 200: 'David Cook' #36 (3/7/09)
Not a single Idol alum saw their album sales increase on the Billboard Top 200 for the chart week of March 7, but that's understandable considering the Grammy effect is now history. Fortunately, the chart positions of the albums did not change all that drastically for most, showing that they are doing their best to stay competitive with the non-Idol portion of the industry.
Of course it was David Cook who once again led the alums on the chart, as his self-titled album fell four spots to #36 accompanied by a 35% sales drop to 15.8k copies, placing its total at 993.6k. It should officially cross the platinum mark sometime this weekend if it has not done so already. Following him was Jennifer Hudson, whose debut album took the largest tumble of them all this week, collapsing 52% to 12.3k. The album fell #30-50 and now sits at a total of 633.4k copies.
Carrie Underwood was third in line as usual, as her Carnival Ride remained steady at #63 but slipped 18% and moved an additional 9.7k copies this week. It has sold 2.652 million to date. David Archuleta's debut took a bigger hit, falling 22 spots to #82 and sliding 36% in the sales department. It sold 7.8k copies for the week and 647.6k in all.
Progressing down the chart at a faster pace this week was Melinda Doolittle's three-week-old debut album Coming Back to You (it looks like Billboard is still confusing it with its first single, "It's Your Love"), which fell 10 spots to #102 and sold 6.1k copies for the week. Its 30% sales dip places its total at 25.5k. Daughtry was a bit behind with its debut album, selling 4.5k for a total of 4.389 million. It was down 11 spots to #129 and down 29% in sales figures.
And then there was David Foster's Hit Man compilation, which moved another 3.3k copies for the week, down 20 spots to #187 and down 25% saleswise. Its total is now at 151.9k.

Digital sales roundup: "My Life Would Suck Without You" #7 (2/20/09)
Since the Grammy effect has all but worn off by now, Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart for the week was very sparse in terms of Idol representation, at least in terms of which tracks were cherry picked to have their sales data released.
Leading once again was Kelly Clarkson with "My Life Would Suck Without You," as it inched ever closer to the million mark, totaling 941k. It was down one spot to #7 and down 13% sales-wise, taking in another 125.7k downloads.
Carrie Underwood's fifth single from Carnival Ride, "I Told You So," was the only other Idol track to make an appearance this week, as it debuted at #178 with 9.7k downloads sold. Its total is at 56.8k.

Cook's self-titled effort was down #31-33 for the week in the chart rankings, but the album sustained a heftier sales dip of 35% to 16k.
Jennifer Hudson's debut, which had last week catapulted back into the Top 50 thanks to her showing at the Grammy Awards, fell off once again this week.
Look for finalized figures to be released sometime in the next few days, hopefully sometime tonight.

Digital sales roundup: "My Life Would Suck Without You" #6 (2/13/09)
The Grammy effect was once again felt on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart for the week, as three Idol tracks found their way onto (and in some cases, back onto) the chart.
But it was Kelly Clarkson who once again was the alum with the top-charting track, as "My Life Would Suck Without You" slipped four spots to #6 thanks to an 18% sales dip, and its weekly take of 144.3k put its total at an impressive 815.4k.
Next up was the first of two Jennifer Hudson songs that made the cut, as "Spotlight" rocketed #145-87 with 20.8k sold. It was up 71% for the week and now has a total of 442.2k. Jennifer's other song, "You Pulled Me Through," sold the majority of its downloads in this past week alone, as its 16.8k brought its total to 21.7k. It entered the chart at #109 with an 827% sales increase.
Next up was Carrie Underwood's "Last Name," which witnessed a healthy 74% bump to 13.5k, marking its re-entry onto the chart at #137. It has now sold 721.7k. And David Archuleta's second single "A Little Too Not Over You" gained 35% for a #168 re-entry, marking an extra 11.4k downloads sold for the week. Its tota; has passed the century mark, sitting at 103.3k.

'Idol' BB 200: 'David Cook' #29 (2/21/09)
It was another very healthy week on the Billboard Top 200 for the chart week of Feb. 21, as the post-Grammys bounce was in full force for a few old favorites from the Idol catalog.
As usual, David Cook's self-titled effort led the pack, as it declined 5% to 17k, falling nine spots to #29. It has totaled 953.3k. Jennifer Hudson's debut saw the greatest percentage increase, as it was up 57% to 12.1k, lunging forth #71-47, meaning it now stands at 595.5k.
The week's lone Idol debut was Melinda Doolittle's Coming Back to You, which garnered 10.9k, placing it at #58 for the week. David Archuleta's David Archuleta followed right behind at #70, down nine spots from last week despite a 2% sales increase, as the album's take of 9.1k for the week put its total at 627.6k.
Another album to see a bit of a Grammy boost was Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride, as it sold 8.2k, up 15%, but slipped two spots to #82. It has reached a total of 2.631 million. Not up for any Grammys, Daughtry's debut album slipped a scant 1% to 4.9k for the week, but fell a heavier 18 spots on the chart. It has amassed 4.378 million to date.
And David Foster's Hit Man collection took in 3.8k for the week, which was down 8% from the previous week, and marked a #128-166 drop on the chart. It has sold 144.3k copies in total.

Jennifer Hudson's "If This Isn't Love" video premieres
Coming just three days after Jennifer Hudson took home a Grammy for R&B Album of the Year, the music video for the second single off her debut album, "If This Isn't Love," today premiered on AOL Music's PopEater blog. Watch the video below:
Jennifer will next appear at the 40th Annual NAACP Image Awards, which will be broadcast live on FOX tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET.

'Idol' BB 200: 'David Cook' #20 (2/14/09)
After a lengthry delay, there are finally figures and chart postions available for Idol-related entries on the Billboard Top 200 for the chart week of Feb. 14. It was no surprise that David Cook's self-titled disc once again led the pack, as it slid six spots to #20 thanks to a 27% sales dip to 17.8k copies. It has nearly officially passed the platinum mark, sitting at 936.3k.
David Archuleta's debut album followed, falling #52-61 with another 8.9k copies sold for the week. The miniscule 6% drop sent its total to 618.5k. Already seeing some positive movement in anticipation of the 51st annual Grammy Awards, Jennifer Hudson's Jennifer Hudson rose 10% to 7.7k copies for the week. The debut, which advanced #77-71 on the chart, will see its 583.4k sum expand drastically in the next two weeks.
Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride was sitting pretty once again, as it fell only 3% with a 7.2k take for the week, placing its total at 2.623 million. It might have slid 10 spots to #80 for the week, but expect a nice bump thanks to Carrie's Grammy win and performance. Meanwhile, Daughtry's Daughtry sold another 4.9k copies despite a 16-spot drop to #110, placing its total at 4.373k. It still only managed to suffer a 15% week-to-week drop.
And David Foster's Hit Man compilation rounded out the Idol representation, as the CD/DVD garnered 4.1k with a #104-128 fall and a 20% sales decrease, placing its total at 140.5k.

Arch blogs from Hawaii
One day after singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the NFL's Pro Bowl in Hawaii, David Archuleta took it upon himself to blog on his official music MySpace page about his recent experiences. In addition to talking about his performance of "A Little Too Not Over You" at Ohana Day on Saturday, Arch marveled at how tall Enrique Iglesias is:

Ryan calls Chris Brown a "class act" minutes before assault news
In an eerie interview that will probably be played many time in the next few days, Ryan Seacrest called Chris Brown a "class act" in an interview with Jordin Sparks just minutes before news of his assault on girlfriend Rihanna broke. Watch it below (says it at 1:10):
Ryan brought Chris' name up when talking to Jordin because the two collaborated on her song "No Air," which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals category.
Grammy wrap-up: Carrie, Jennifer win; Jordin loses; Chris Brown in jail
It was a very eventful night in LA, as news about Chris Brown's alleged assault and the news that the victim of his assault was girlfriend Rihanna set a sobering tone prior to the show's start.
Carrie Underwood won for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for "Last Name," marking her fourth Grammy win in three years. She then went on to speak with Ryan on E!'s red carpet show, where she got back at him by bringing up Bikini Girl for insinuating that she "gets around" after not dating anyone in high school. Watch their exchange below:
Also Carrie-related, "Ever Ever After" failed to win the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, losing to Peter Gabriel's song from Wall-E.
But she did bring it home on her performance of "Last Name," although her band could have toned it down a bit. Watch the performance below:
As for Jennifer Hudson, she went 0-3 in the pre-televised ceremony, losing Best R&B Song, Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
But she kicked off the televised portion of the ceremony with a win in the Best R&B Album category, which was followed by a touching acceptance speech and an even more moving performance of "You Pulled Me Through," which can be viewed below:
Jordin Sparks lost her only nomination, Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals, for "No Air" to Alison Krauss and Robert Plant's "Rich Girl." But the Chris Brown news was probably a bigger disappointment for her.
And a very unexpected appearance by an Idol alums that was spotted on the red carpet and at the show was none other than Blake Lewis. Maybe he was there to cheer on his friend Jordin? Who knows.
As for IDOL LIVE's predictions for the Idol-related categories, the final result was three for seven. Not too good.

Arch sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Pro Bowl

It's certainly no Super Bowl gig, but it's definitely something. Maybe next year Arch will be at that big awards show in LA?
IDOL LIVE predix: Alums at the Grammys
Although there have already been many predictions made for tonight's 51st annual Grammy Awards ceremony, IDOL LIVE has yet to jump into the fray with its thoughts on the Idol alums' chances. After giving the categories careful thought, the following are the conclusions that were drawn.
>Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, "Rich Woman"
I really, really want to root for Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown here, as "No Air" was one of the biggest songs of 2008 in addition to being one of the biggest songs by an alum. But Plant and Krauss are going to take home a ton of trophies tonight, mainly in the Album of the Year category, so this will be just another feather in their cap. Jordin will have plenty more chances to win a Grammy, though, so it will not that big of a disappointment.
>Best Female R&B Vocal Performance: Jennifer Hudson, "Spotlight"
If Jennifer Hudson only wins one award tonight, it will be in this category. Besides Alicia Keys, the competition is fairly weak, and there would be an outrage if Jennifer was sent home winless. Add in the fact that "Spotlight" is a solid track and you've got yourself a victory.
>Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals: Al Green featuring John Legend, "Stay With Me (By The Sea)"
Al Green and John Legend are perennial Grammy faves, and since Jennifer will take home an award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, it will lessen the blow for when she doesn't get this one. Fantasia has been nominated but never won an award, and that streak will continue.
>Best R&B Song: Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen & Shaffer Smith, songwriters, "Spotlight"
Although this technically will not count as a win for Jennifer herself, it will continue to support the fact that "Spotlight" is a Grammy-worthy song.
>Best R&B Album: Al Green, Lay It Down
Al will win most of the categories he is nominated for, so this one is a must for him. Jennifer's album was worthy of the nomination, but the win is another story.
>Best Female Country Vocal Performance: Carrie Underwood, "Last Name"
It wouldn't be the Grammys if Carrie Underwood did not take home at least one award. This year will not be any different, as she will go for the hat trick tonight. Plus, she's actually performing the song.
>Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media: John Mayer, "Say" (From The Bucket List)
This is a no-brainer. John Mayer's competition is two tracks from Enchanted ("Ever Ever After" should be happy it was even nominated in the first place), which will split votes, and the song from Walk Hard is a joke. The only real competition comes from Peter Gabriel & Thomas Newman's "Down to Earth" from Wall-E, but that will win an Oscar in a few weeks so Mayer will get this win.

It's not usually strange to see a bunch of Idol alums mulling around Los Angeles considering it is the entertainment capital of the world, but the importance of this weekend is just a bit more heightened than usual.
Last night, the annual pre-Grammy party hosted by music mogul Clive Davis (aka the "crypt keeper" to Kelly Clarkson fans) took place, which featured performances by many artists including Kelly herself. She performed "My Life Would Suck Without You" in addition to a cover of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart." Jennifer Hudson also took the stage to belt out "Spotlight" and a duet with Barry Manilow on the latter's "Weekend in New England," which is widely considered to be Jennifer's best performance on Idol. Other alums that were in attendance were Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia and three of the four judges: Kara DioGuardi, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. Noticeably absent was Jordin Sparks, who attended the gala last year. She stated in an interview with Johnjay & Rich on Thursday that she would be in the studio recording prior to going to the Grammys, so that could be a possibility.
As for rehearsals, the LA Times blogged during a bunch of them including Carrie's performance of "Last Name." She spoke with the Times during the rehearsals, saying:
"A few years ago I performed on the Grammys and Rascal Flatts and I were the only country acts ... We did a tribute to Bob Wills and the Eagles ... now this year, there's a ton of country. It's so exciting."The only other alum that will perform tonight is Jennifer, who will sing "You Pulled Me Through."

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Performances for Carrie, Jennifer at Grammys
The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:
>It was announced earlier this week that Carrie Underwood would be performing "Last Name" and Jennifer Hudson would be performing "You Pulled Me Through" at the 51st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. Carrie is nominated for one award, while Jennifer is nominated for three.
>Elliott Yamin appeared in a video on YouTube with KISS FM's JoJo where he did an impromptu 20-second performance of his upcoming single "Fight for Love." Watch the video below:
Elliott also said the single will hit radio on Tues., March 10.
>Michael Johns performed "You Can't Always Get What You Want" at ESPN's "Next Big Weekend 2009" on Sat., Jan. 31, in Tampa, Fla. The performance was one of many that was in preparation of last weekend's Super Bowl. Michael also yesterday performed an acoustic version of "To Love Somebody" on KTLA's morning show.
>Amanda Overmyer performed her song "Lay It Down" on FOX 19 in Cincinnati yesterday. Watch the performance below:
The song is off of Amanda's debut album Solidify.
>Jordin Sparks appeared on Phoenix, Ariz.'s KISS FM morning show Johnjay & Rich on Thursday to chat about the Super Bowl and other things. Jordin agreed to thank the two radio show hosts if she wins a Grammy tomorrow. Hopefully both of the aforementioned happen.

Carrie, Jordin shown on Katie Couric's Grammy special
Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks each were featured on Katie Couric's Grammy special that aired last night on CBS. Watch their 10-second clips below:
Jordin's most embarrassing moment was slipping and falling while doing a duet with Melinda Doolittle on stage at an Idol tour concert in 2007, while Carrie talked about how sometimes she gets booed when she mentions she's a vegetarian "in some parts of the country."
The 51st annual Grammy Awards will air Sun., Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Carrie and Jordin are each nominated for awards.
