There were more backward movements than there were forward movements when it came to tracks by Idol alums on the most recent edition of the Billboard's Hot 100 chart for the chart week of March 20.
Kris Allen's "Live Like We're Dying" kicked things off having slid two spots to #20. Kris also saw his charity single of his live performance of "Let It Be" pull back seven spots to #70 in its second week.
Adam Lambert more or less followed suit with his single "Whataya Want From Me," which declined #24-25, while Daughtry's "Life After You" was up another two spots to #39.
Another positive advancement was had in "Temporary Home" by Carrie Underwood, which was up #52-48 thanks to increases in airplay. The Idol-related track that had the biggest tumble was Artists for Haiti's "We Are the World" charity single featuring Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson and Katharine McPhee among others. The single continued its crumble towards the edge of the chart with a 30-spot drop to #66.
And Danny Gokey's "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me" finally emerged onto the Hot 100 with a #82 bow off the heels of his debut album release and performance on Idol's results show last Thursday.

Digital sales roundup: "Live Like We're Dying" #22 (3/20/10)
Due to the likely absence of my usual source for Soundscan figures on Idol-related charts and sales figures for the foreseeable future, I am going to have to rely on other sources, mainly Brian Mansfield of USAToday.com's excellent Idol Chatter blog. So with that, here are data from Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart.
Kris Allen kicked things off with his single "Live Like We're Dying," which came in at #22, down three spots from the previous week thanks to a 10% sales drop to 57k downloads, putting its total at a clean 1.057 million to date. Adam Lambert's "Whataya Want From Me" held steady at #23 in light of a 7% decrease in sales, adding in 54k downloads for a new total of 597k.
There were some good numbers put up by debuts, including 40k for Kris's live charity performance of "Let It Be" and the Spanish language "Somos El Mundo: 25 por Haiti" featuring David Archuleta netted 15k for the week.

Album review: Danny Gokey's 'My Best Days'
Despite finishing third on the eighth installment of ‘American Idol,’ Danny Gokey opted to take his time before releasing his debut album. Now nearly a year since being eliminated from the competition, Gokey re-enters the musical ring with the Mark Bright-produced ‘My Best Days.’
On “Like That’s a Bad Thing,” Gokey does a good job throwing his hat into the country/rock arena. “Get Away” is another up-tempo track bursting with energy that benefits the most by Gokey’s powerful vocals.
“I Still Believe” is probably the best bet for single no. 2, as it features relevant lyrics (“never saw a man walk on water / never met a man who walked on water / but I still believe”) and it is very catchy. Think modern country at its finest. Another ballad, “Tiny Life,” is steel guitar-clad and builds at the bridge to an impressive finale. It is probably the album’s best track, as it carries with it a moving message and is very radio-friendly.
Like a lot of the songs found on ‘My Best Days,’ “It’s Only” has a nice message threaded into its lyrics and the gentle instrumentation is ear-pleasing, but it comes off sounding like a rip-off of something Carrie Underwood would put out.
Despite getting off to a good start on the album, there are also a few bumps. “Life On Ya” is a little corny and sounds too similar to “My Best Days,” but it sounds like something Gokey would have fun performing live. “Crazy Not to” is boringly sweet, and is really only a filler track. Nothing more, nothing less.
And the album’s weakest song comes on its ninth track, as “Be Somebody” doesn’t really make sense and is composed of various clichés. This makes it hard to figure out why it was included in the final track list.
Gokey closes out ‘My Best Days’ with the heartfelt ballad “I Will Not Say Goodbye,” a tribute of sorts to his deceased wife Sophia. It’s a little reminiscent of previous country hits like Lonestar’s “I’m Already There,” but its without a doubt the most sincere offering on the whole disc.
In summary, Danny Gokey puts up an honest effort and actually gives viewers a surprisingly strong country effort, especially for a debut. If he surrounds himself with the right people in the industry, he could be looking at a long career and may in fact be the second-biggest country act to come out of ‘Idol.’

IDOL LIVE predix: Danny Gokey's 'My Best Days'
Danny's album, courtesy of RCA Nashville, has a few things going for it that will help it stand out from the crowd and most likely fare better than recent releases by alums. First, it's a country album with Christian/Gospel overlap, which is something that hasn't been heard recently. This should help it gain the attention of a wide swath of fans of the genres.
Another factor that will help Danny's album out is the general lack of competition that it will face this week, especially among country releases. Additionally, Danny's single has been making steady progress up the charts at radio, which definitely doesn't hurt an album's prospects of doing well this week.
One problem Danny will have is his ability to get the message out there that his album is available. Appearing on Idol's results show on Thursday is a huge deal and is basically the pinnacle of promotional opportunities for any artist, but it is necessary for Danny to reach past the usual Idol audience in order to open north of 50k in his album's debut week. Sadly, there are no other nationally-televised appearances for him this week, so it will be hard for him to accomplish this goal.
All things considered, Danny should do fairly well with My Best Days for now, with a probable opening week tally of 43k copies in the cards. This would be above Allison's first week album sales but below the numbers of discs by Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Carrie Underwood to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XLIV

>It was announced yesterday that Carrie Underwood will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" prior to Super Bowl XLIV on Sun., Feb. 7. Per the wire services:
Underwood, 26, winner of four Grammys and one of the most commercially successful artists to emerge from TV talent show "American Idol", follows in the footsteps of Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Neil Diamond and others celebrities chosen to sing at the biggest event in the U.S. sporting calendar.
Carrie will be the third-straight Idol alum to do the honors, as Jennifer Hudson sang the Anthem at last year's Superbowl and Jordin Sparks did the same at Super Bowl XLII.

>David Archuleta apparently was working overtime last Friday when he donated his time to the Haiti Telethon. Although he didn't get a coveted performance spot during the telecast, Arch was busy manning the phones. According to People.com:
"The celebrities were so low-key. Everyone drove themselves, there were no handlers, no entourages," adds the source. "Everyone was in a good mood. Most people showed up early and many celebrities, including Chevy Chase, Olivia Wilde and David Archuleta, stayed after the telethon was over so they could keep answering phone calls.Arch seemed appreciative of the opportunity to help out with the effort, as he tweeted:

Ayla, whose EP Circles hit iTunes this week, reiterated her father's challenge to take on President Obama in a two-on-two basketball match at the White House. Stay tuned on whether or not this plan will ever materialize.

>Jordin Sparks underwent surgery to remove her appendix yesterday after she had to cancel appearances in Australia due to acute appendicitis. Now bedridden, Jordin has taken to her official Twitter account to tell fans all about the experience:

Danny's first single was originally slated to be the ballad "It's Only," but RCA Nashville thought better of it and swapped the "Jesus, Take the Wheel"-esque track for this uptempo offering. Looks like Danny's country career is off to a good start.
>It was announced yesterday that Jennifer Hudson's next main starring role will be as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in the biopic Winnie. Mandela is of course the wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The film will be directed by Darrell Roodt and filming is set to commence in South Africa in May 2010.
