Dewyze's Debut Album is Set for Release in Fall 2010
LOS ANGELES, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- American Idol Season 9 winner Lee Dewyze has been signed to 19 Recordings/RCA Records. He is preparing to start work on his debut album which is due for release in fall 2010.
The 24 year old Mount Prospect, IL native impressed millions throughout the season taking home this year's American Idol winning title. Dewyze is a self taught musician who began singing and playing guitar in his teens. Auditioned in Chicago, Dewyze was the only male contestant never to land in the bottom three during American Idol Season 9.

Kelly Clarkson can't catch a break - 3 more tracks leak
What is going on in Kelly Clarkson Land lately? After last week's leak of a demo titled "Cleopatra" that set off an angry tweetrade by Kelly in which she claimed it was not a song that would be appearing on her upcoming album, but was a demo she recorded for another artist.
Once again, more leaked Kelly tracks are coming in fast and furious, as three of them found their way onto YouTube on Tuesday. Listen to "Lover Stay" and "Wash Rinse Repeat" below ("Naked Eye" is no longer on YouTube but is available to stream over at IdolLator):

So how is this happening? Kelly obviously isn't amused, but she has yet to comment on the most recent batch of leaks. To add to her troubles, she is now being accused of ripping off the chord progressions of an Arcade Fire song titled "Rebellion (Lies)," and everyone is pegging "Wash Rinse Repeat" as a dig at Ryan Tedder, who got Kelly into hot water last year with the whole "Halo" / "Already Gone" controversy. Others are claiming she might be targeting Clive Davis, and still others are suggesting she's taking aim not at one particular person but at the music industry in general.
In short, Kelly has seen better days, but at least it's good to know her 5-album deal with RCA is about to run dry. What do you think of these leaks?

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Paula Abdul says Howard Stern "hates" 'Idol'

IDOL LIVE predix: Katharine McPhee's 'Unbroken'
Besides the big changes in music stylistically, the album is also accompanied by different expectations sales-wise compared to Katharine McPhee. The latter opened at #2 with 116k copies, largely thanks to Kat just coming off a runner-up finish on the fifth season of Idol and a growing single in "Over It." This time around, however, there is no Idol excitement and Unbroken's lead single "Had It All" is only gradually moving up Mediabase's airplay chart and Billboard's AC chart.
Still, Kat's album will benefit from a lack of competition, as Ke$ha's debut LP will be the only direct threat. Plus, she's going to be out and about on the talk show circuit over the next few weeks, kicking off with a visit to Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show on NBC tonight.
Still, album sales in the dead of January have not traditionally been big sellers, and so it will not be a surprise if Unbroken does not open with eye-popping tallies. Still, there's a good chance of a consistent seller in Unbroken, especially if "Had It All" continues to rise on the charts, and so a debut week bow of 20k is most likely in store, with chart placement around #20.

Adam Lambert's 'For Your Entertainment' album cover
Well, it's the moment a lot of people have been waiting for. The album art for Adam Lambert's first post-Idol release has been revealed, and is anyone really surprised by it? Possibly the most cringe-worthy cover in Idol history (yes, even worse than Blake Lewis' Audio Day Dream and certainly worse than Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway cover).
But if this album screams anything other than "let's go play dress-up," it screams "Adam Lambert." At least no one can blame RCA for choosing the cover.
For Your Entertainment will be released on Mon., Nov. 23.

Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone" music video leaks
Falling in line with what is expected of the leakage of music videos prior to their intended release dates, Kelly Clarkson's video for her current single "Already Gone" hit the net yesterday ahead of schedule. Watch the video, which was directed by Joseph Kahn, below:
A self-playing orchestra? The video is extremely boring, but then again, RCA probably does not see the point in shelling out the proper amount of dough to get a more lively product. When Kelly herself has to joke about her Letterman performance sounding "less like 'Halo,'" it's easy to see that the two parties are not seeing eye to eye on this song as a single choice.

Kris signs with Jive; Adam with RCA
The announcements came more quietly than in years past, but it was finally officially revealed that Kris Allen and Adam Lambert have signed with their Sony-BMG record labels. According to EOnline.com, Kris has signed with 19/Jive, while Adam has inked a deal with 19/RCA.
As for what kind of music Kris will be recording for his forthcoming album, he told EOnline:"I felt like I did exactly what I wanted to do on the show that I would want to do on a record," Kris said. "When I went on the show and did 'Ain't No Sunshine,' I felt that was the kind of stuff that I wanted to do—stuff that kind of moves people and has that feeling."
Adam mentioned his deal a little more nonchalantly, as the discussion du jour still seems to be revolving around his sexuality. Per Eonline:So coming in second place, do you have a record contract? Collaborating with anyone yet? You said you'd love to work with Lady Gaga, Madonna...
Yes, I do, with RCA. I can't say yet. I wanna keep [collaborators] a surprise, but we have some really great stuff in store.

Daughtry's 'Leave This Town' set for July 14 release
Chris Daughtry is increasingly finding his Twitter account to be the best way to break news, usurping the traditional press releases that his band's record label, RCA, is used to putting out. Five hours ago, he tweeted the title of Daughtry's sophomore album: Leave This Town.CHRIS_Daughtry New album "Leave This Town" in stores July 14th!!!!!!!!!
The title does scream Nickelback / 3 Doors Down, but that's what works for them and it fits pretty well. As previously reported, it is indeed set for a July 14 release and can now be pre-ordered on Amazon for $13.99.

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Kat nabs a role on 'CSI: NY'
The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:
>It was announced Wednesday that Katharine McPhee would be the latest Idol alum to have a guest role on a CBS show, following in the footsteps of Mikalah Gordon and Chris Daughtry. Kat will play none other than a singer on an episode of CSI: NY, which is slated to air sometime in April.
>30-second clips of all the songs on Kelly Clarkson's latest album All I Ever Wanted were today made available on iTunes. Shortly thereafter, the album leaked in full.
>Clay Aiken has been ousted from his record label of four years. According to Billboard, RCA and Clay quietly parted ways a few months ago, but nothing had been made public until today. RCA has now dropped every Idol runner-up it has signed since the show began.
>The full schedule for Jennifer Hudson's tour, which she is co-headlining with Robin Thicke, was revealed this week. The tour will visit 19 U.S. cities between March 31 and May 8, beginning in Albany, N.Y. and finishing in Houston, Tex.
>Ruben Studdard seems to be in a bit of trouble with the tax brigade. According to The Detroit News, Ruben currently owes $254,119 in federal taxes. Maybe sales from his new single "Together" and his upcoming album Love IS will help offset these accumulated no-nos?

Cook's "Come Back to Me" to impact HAC March 30
Apparently David Cook's second single will be "Come Back to Me," as it is listed on AllAccess.com as hitting Hot Adult Contemporary radio on Mon., March 30.
"Come Back to Me" was one of three potential singles RCA tested on the music testing site, RateTheMusic.com, back in early January. The other two songs that were included in the test run were "Lie" and "Declaration," the latter of which was the heavy favorite to be Cook's second single.
There's no word yet on what the label's plans are for a release at Top 40, but it shouldn't be far behind.

Although the track listing for the deluxe edition has not yet been posted on Amazon, it is rumored to include "Tip Of My Tongue," which Kelly co-wrote with Ryan Tedder and "The Day We Fell Apart," which was penned by Sam Watters, Louis Biancianello, Vidal Davis and Andre Harris. So by our estimation, it appears Kelly had a hand in writing seven of 17 songs, which shows that RCA has a lot of faith in her despite the fact that she wrote most of My December.
In case you are one of the few that have yet to pre-order it, All I Ever Wanted will be out Tues., March 10.

Katharine possibly signed to Verve Records
After what has been a yearlong journey, it looks like Katharine McPhee is finally able to call a record label other than RCA home. According to promotional firm JazzzDog, Kat will be having new music released in 2009 via its services:
Coming in 2009: Chick Corea and Hiromi, Bill Frisell, Randy Bachman, Diana Krall, Chris Botti, Jamie Cullum, Melody Gardot, Allen Toussaint, Katherine McPhee, Brad Mehldau and a ton more!Also, at a recent showcase she did at Chicago's House of Blues, it was stated by a source that wishes to remain anonymous that Kat is now on Verve Records, one of the many sub-labels of the Universal Music Group umbrella. Verve specializes in modern jazz and includes artists such as Diana Krall and Melody Gardot on its roster.
Kat has yet to confirm this, but it looks like this is close to a done deal. It's anyone's guess as to what this means for the musical direction Kat will be taking her music in.

Kelly Clarkson's 'All I Ever Wanted' out March 17
As rumblings that Kelly Clarkson's upcoming fourth studio album would not be titled Masquerade as previously reported by The Wall Street Journal became increasingly hard to ignore, RCA today unveiled the album's official title and cover art.
All I Ever Wanted is also the name of a track that will appear on the album that is a cover of the Oklahoma-based band Aranda's song, which can be heard on its official music MySpace page.
This cover is leagues better than the cover for "My Life Would Suck Without You," as the airbrush setting was set to "high" rather than "over the top."
All I Ever Wanted will be released on Tues., March 17, and can be pre-ordered for $9.99 on Amazon.com.

Kelly's "My Life Would Suck Without You" single cover
RCA sent out the cover art for Kelly Clarkson's forthcoming single "My Life Would Suck Without You" this morning to everyone on her mailing list. It looks like Kelly is going for the "CVS Valentine's Day special" look. And apparently the "suck" she is talking about is the kind she will be doing to that lollipop?
But all kidding aside, this cover will have to hold Kelly's fans over until the song itself leaks, which should be any day now considering it will be released to radio on Jan. 19. Stay tuned for any more breaking news.
'Idol' alums abound on New Year's celebrations
If you were watching any of the many New Year's Eve celebrations on the networks tonight, chances are you saw some face time by someone connected in some way to Idol. If you were watching FOX's New Year's Eve Live, then you surely would have seen David Cook receive his first platinum record courtesy of RCA Records and 19E for "The Time of My Life" before he performed "Light On" in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, over on ABC, Ryan Seacrest helmed Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Kellie Pickler as a Times Square crowd correspondent. The two braved the 1-degree (with wind chill) temperature with a million others. Watch a segment that happened moments before the ball dropped with both Ryan and Kellie below (made awkward by the inclusion of Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas on the same stage):
In one segment, the sixth-place finalist of Season 5 was classic Kellie when she told a couple from the Bay area "you guys are so amazin'!"

Cook's SNL performances
David Cook should royally thank RCA for booking him the biggest gig in his short post-Idol career. He performed on what was by far the best episode of Saturday Night Live this season. Watch him perform "Light On" and "Declaration" below:

Now comes the all important question that every Word Nerd will be asking in the next few days...Why did RCA decide to put out "Light On" over "Declaration"? Hello, was Clive Davis re-hired and put in charge of Sony BMG? What happened?
Oh well, all that matters is he hit it out of the park tonight and with what could be record audiences for the episode, the label will escape scrutiny for the short term just for securing this appearance.
P.S. Cook gets bonus points for shaking Sen. John McCain's hand. Putting politics aside is always a smart idea.

Jive, Arch follow RCA, Cook's lead
Seeing how well RCA's iTunes pre-order tactic worked out last week, Jive has somehow managed to find room for an ad promoting the availability to pre-order David Archuleta's debut album on the digital music retailer. The ad can be found both on the store's main page and the main page of the Pop section.
So far it appears that this strategy is also paying off for Arch, as the deluxe version of his album is currently #8 on iTunes' Top 100 Albums chart (it is also #4 on the Pop 100 Albums chart). It is on sale for $12.99 and includes 16 tracks, the video for "Crush" and a digital booklet.
"Crush" has also jumped a bit on iTunes' Top 100 overall songs chart, as it is now #15. This is especially good news for the single, because all pre-orders of the album will add a sale to "Angels" and not "Crush," which would make a bit more sense because RCA made "Light On" the instant download upon pre-ordering David Cook's album.
Cook's album reached #1 last week after becoming available to pre-order. Time will tell if Arch can reach the same standing.

RCA won't let "Light On" go out
Although many have already jumped what seemed to be the sinking S.S. "Light On," RCA Records is steadfast in its support of the single. A nice surprise for David Cook's fans was found on the main page of iTunes this morning, as a great big huge banner allowing fans to pre-order Cook's debut album was put front and center (or more like to the immediate right of center). It also can be found on the main page of the Pop section (this time on the immediate left).
The ability to pre-order the album and receive "Light On" as a bonus is a very smart move on the record company's part, and it is already proving to be successful. After hitting a low chart ranking of #98 on iTunes Top 100 overall songs chart on Oct. 19, "Light On" has rebounded to #38 at the present time, a 60-spot improvement in only two days. To add to the good news, Cook's album is already sitting at #6 on iTunes' Top 100 overall albums chart based on pre-sales alone, just one spot behind Beyonce's upcoming I Am...Sasha Fierce, which also hits stores on Nov. 18 and was made available for pre-order on iTunes today.
If this was RCA's plan all along, then it deserves credit especially considering its erratic behavior earlier this month. But it should be suggested that the label should have staved off the digital release of "Light On" until it was able to attain a substantial amount of airplay, and then add it as part of a special pre-order deal on iTunes. Be this as it may, playing Monday morning quarterback is pretty much futile at this point.
To add to things, the following was included in iTunes' "New Music Tuesday" e-mail sent out today:
"The Battle of the Davids" was one of American Idol's fiercest competitions ever, as David Cook ultimately outlasted his younger competitor to win it all. With his self-titled debut, the rock-oriented vocalist is out to prove that viewers made the right choice. Pre-order the album on iTunes and get the pre-order-only track "My Last Request" when the album is released on November 18 and the single "Light On" will begin to download immediately.Way to put down the Archies, RCA.
But all that matters is that RCA finally has its act together, and combining this new approach with Cook's appearance as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live on Nov. 1, things are definitely looking up.

Cook to perform on SNL Nov. 1
If there is any question as to how dedicated 19E and RCA are to pushing David Cook's debut album, the fact that he is performing on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" on Nov. 1 should quell any anxiety fans are having. The Chicago Tribune's TV correspondent Maureen Ryan announced via her blog that Cook will be the show's musical guest with Ben Affleck fulfilling hosting duties.
What is notable about this appearance is that no Idol has ever performed on the show prior to having an album released. He is also only the fourth Idol alum to perform on the show, following Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. To magnify the situation even further, this is the final regular season episode before the presidential election on Nov. 4, so the audience should be bigger than ever in anticipation, especially is someone makes an appearance *cough*SarahPalin*cough*
It looks like RCA really is pulling out all the stops for Cook afterall.

Analysis: "Light On" doesn't meet high expectations
David Cook's opening week sales of 109,035 for his second single, "Light On," are underwhelming. There's no way of getting around it considering Cook's upcoming release is one of the most highly anticipated from an Idol in a long time. But before you Word Nerds jump in defense, consider the following: this is only because some are choosing to make the release into a competition, which is nothing new in the Idol world. By establishing this climate of competition with David Archuleta, whose "Crush" opened with 166,247, it was almost impossible for expectations to be met, which is the reason the sales do in fact seem underwhelming. And this goes both ways of course, as with any battle.
But when put into perspective, things do not look nearly as bad. Here are some comparable first week sales of opening singles for Idol champs from 2007:
Kelly Clarkson, "Never Again" 106,809 (#4 on Hot Digital Songs)
Carrie Underwood, "So Small" 70,808 (#6 on Hot Digital Songs)
Jordin Sparks, "Tattoo" 33,764 (#22 on Hot Digital Songs)
By looking at these numbers it is easy to see that "Light On" is not nearly as disappointing as some are making it out to be. Granted, RCA was probably trying its best to boost the numbers when they received early figures last week, which helps explain its behavior in choice of promotional approach. At least some dots are starting to connect.
The fact that RCA feels it needs to try its hardest to make sure the first week sales of "Light On" are in line with what many had expected just underlines the current attitude in not only the music industry, but the Idol world as well. There is no better proof than the fact that the label is milking Cook's Idol appeal for all its worth, which is not a bad thing at all, but still shows that the connection is serving an important component in his marketing as fans await his album.
Another well established factor that contributed to the lower-than-expected sales is the amount of competition the single has faced. "Light On" was one of five major digital single releases for the week, which stands as one of the busiest weeks for the 2008 calendar. In these tough economic times, there is only so much money to go around, and if it comes down to purchasing Nickelback's "Gotta Be Somebody," Christina Aguilera's "Keeps Getting Better" or "Light On," not every song is going to get the same sales as each one might have generated had there been less competition. It's not like this is the week after Christmas.
And keep in mind, "Light On" has not even gone for adds yet at any radio format (it will hit Hot AC on Mon., Oct. 13 and Top 40 and Rock next Tues., Oct. 14), so the fact that is has received 519 spins and a total audience impression of 1.838 million to date is very respectable. As for its position on iTunes at the moment (#21), that is something that will fluctuate over the next few weeks before Cook's album hits shelves. Nothing should be read into it unless it fails to stabilize by the time the single starts making substantial gains in airplay.
So for any Cook fans that are going around pouting about "Light On" selling 109k, cheer up. This is about longevity, not first week sales. Just ask Jordin Sparks. And for any Arch fans that are going around bashing Cook and making this into a competition, be careful what you wish for. Competition is all fun and good, but it is meaningless in the larger scope of things.
