Despite the potential for a new debut album from an Idol alum to be recognized as the highest-charting Idol-related entry, the leading lady of the Billboard Top 200 chart once again staved off competition for the chart week of May 23.
When all was said and done, Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted took in another 23.3k copies for a total of 550.2k, which represented a 27% sales increase and a #25-17 jump on the chart side. This Mothers' Day-related bump helped defend against newcomer Fight For Love, Elliott Yamin's sophomore release, which debuted at #26 with 19.9k copies, which was beneath both HDD's estimate of 20.2k and my own prediction of 45k units.
Up next was Carrie Underwood and her Carnival Ride, which was right behind Elliott's album at #27, up two spots from the previous week, and sold another 19.2k. It was up 23% in sales and has sold 2.839 million to date. As for last season's champ, David Cook, his self-titled release shot up 57% to 12.1k. In the rankings, it experienced a 15-spot jump to #47 and its total now sits mightily at 1.126 million copies in all.
Daughtry's debut album saw an insane 305% increase thanks to the band's appearance on last week's Idol results show, which resulted in an additional 11.6k copies being sold for the week. It advanced 127 spots to #50 and its total stands at 4.437 million. Chris Botti's Chris Botti Live In Boston also saw positive movement, albeit not on the same scale, as it increased 34% in sales to 9k and moved up #71-62 on the chart. I has sold 85k in all.
Jennifer Hudson's debut album came in at #86, down one spot from last week, despite a 20% sales spike and 6.7k copies sold for the week. It possesses cumulative sales of 726.3k. And Kellie Pickler's sophomore effort was up 16% in sales to 5.3k copies for a total take of 211.4k. On the chart itself, the album rose #111-107.
The last two Idol-related albums on the chart were David Archuleta's self-titled disc and Mandisa's Freedom. The former sold another 5k, up 21% and two spots to #119 for a total of 698.9k, and the latter moved 4k, up 7% and down 17 spots to #147 for a Billboard total of 14.1k.

HITS estimates: Kelly 24k, Elliott 20.2k
The Mothers' Day effect was in fill swing last week as evidenced by big gains in sales all around for Idol-related albums according to HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart.
Kelly Clarkson once again led things off with All I Ever Wanted, which jumped nine spots to #15 thanks to a 29% uptick in sales to 24k copies. Elliott Yamin, whose sophomore release Fight For Love debuted at #25, was only able to move 20.2k in its first week, which was a whole 25k off my optimistic 45k prediction. Hopefully its total will grow when the actuals come in from Billboard.
Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride was also up for the week, 23% to be exact, as it rose #30-27 and moved another 19.3k units. Both David Cook and Daughtry re-emerged into the Top 50, with the former's self-titled album netting 12.5k and landing at #44 and the latter's debut release taking in 12k right behind at #45.

HITS predix: Elliott 15-20k
HITS Daily Double released its one-day sales estimates for the coming week, and Elliott Yamin's sophomore album was included in the forecast. HDD has it debuting at 15-20k for the week:Other promising debuts include Ferret’s Devil Wears Prada, a Dayton, OH, anti-materialist Christian metal-core outfit (25-30k) and Virgin’s Ben Harper and the Relentless7 (20-25k), followed by Hickory American Idol alum Elliott Yamin, Columbia Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts and UMe’s artist formerly kinown as Cat Stevens, Yusuf, all at 15-20k. E1’s Hatebreed round out the newcomers, with a total in the 12-15k range.
This is a far cry from my bold prediction of 45k, which looks a little unrealistic when examining it further. Still, Elliott should be able to do well over time and it should be a consistent seller assuming he can get a hit radio-wise.

IDOL LIVE predix: Elliott's 'Fight For Love'
Tomorrow marks the release of Elliott Yamin's sophomore album, Fight For Love, which features 12 all new tracks and a host of bonus tracks at various retailers.
Although his self-titled debut opened at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart to 90k in March 2007, that was coming right off his time on the show and he had a single that was starting to climb in sales and airplay in "Wait For You." This time around, however, Elliott's kickoff single for the album is not doing much at radio (yet) and although there have been a few signs of life in the marketing department such as a commercial promoting the album at Target, it has not been as widely publicized as it should have been.
That said, it seems that an opening week tally of 45k seems likely this time around, which is great considering the current climate for albums in general. As for where it will place on the chart, a debut at #6 sounds about right.

Album review: Elliott's 'Fight For Love'

Continuing to prove that the fifth season of ‘American Idol’ is the most successful to date, Elliott Yamin offers up more slick, contemporary tracks and smooth, soulful vocals on his sophomore release ‘Fight For Love.’Fight For Love will be released Tues., May 5, and can be pre-ordered on Amazon.
Yamin kicks things off with a mellow ode to the idea that love has a mind of its own and should not be manipulated on “Let Love Be.” This traditional R&B track sets the stage for the underlying musical strand that threads the rest of the album’s songs together, no matter how much they may differ stylistically.
One of the highlights of ‘Love’ is its title track and first single, “Fight For Love,” a verbal oath by Yamin to his love interest that incorporates synths in all the right places, which do not take away from his vocals. Yes, the lyrics may not be the most groundbreaking, but they fit the mood of the song.
As for mid-tempo tracks, “You” is one of the standouts thanks to instrumentation that complements Yamin’s longing, wounded vocals that combine for an emotional result. There are a few production effects that could have been left in the recording studio to maintain a total sense of vulnerability, but they do not take too much away.
There are also plenty of additional radio-friendly offerings to be found on the disc, including the up-tempo, rock-tinged “Know Better” and the major hit-in-waiting “Apart From Me,” either of which could serve as surefire single choices. “Apart” uses a hint too much auto-tuning, which Yamin does not even need, but somehow it still works in context with the rest of the song. Even “Can’t Keep Loving You” has potential to be a single, which is good news considering it is probably one of the album’s strongest tracks overall.
The “ugly duckling,” if you will, on ‘Love’ is “Cold Heart,” as it sounds like it could have been used in a scene from ‘Grease’ had it been filmed in 2009 rather than 1978. This is not to say that it’s a weak selection, but it just does not fit as well among the rest of the album’s tracks. But Yamin’s vocals shine just the same and it shows his vocal versatility.
As for the album’s weakest track, it fortunately comes near its end. “How Do I Know” sounds like it could have been delivered by 98° back in ‘98. Aside from the overall dated sound production-wise, the lyrics are as generic as possible and don’t do anything to show off Yamin’s skills as an artist.
The sole true ballad to be found on ‘Love’ comes as the second-to-last offering, which is a little too late in the track listing. Still, “This Step Alone” brings forth meaningful lyrics and a sentimental tone. What helps “Alone” is its fusion of traditional ballad elements and a contemporary sound, which results in a powerful
On “Don’t Be Afraid,” the lyrics are a little dry and overdone especially in R&B songs of yesterday, but the production is top-notch and sounds like something Diddy would have selected for himself. “Afraid” is a prime example of how much good production on an album counts, and by enlisting the talents of Midi Mafia, Stargate and Jermaine Dupri, Yamin made a great decision.
“You Say” is dominated by both catchy choruses and verses, which can be a rarity nowadays, and although Yamin’s range is not challenged like it is on other songs, he is still able to manage a few inflections to make things interesting.
In closing the album, Yamin delves into a very personal place on “Someday,” which is about his mother Claudette, whom passed away last year. The throwback soul sound with a taste of electric guitar and backing gospel vocals give the song a very hopeful feeling, which is reflected in the lyrics (“I know that I‘ll see you someday / oh someday I will see you again”).
In only three years, Elliott Yamin has transformed from an unknown Richmond, Va. native into a contemporary R&B artist with a knack for picking material that has positive themes and meaningful lyrics, and ‘Fight For Love’ is no exception. In fact, it may very well be that this album is among the Top 10 to come from an ‘Idol’ alum to date, and hopefully the majority of fans of music will react the same way.

Just four days away from the release of his sophomore album, Fight For Love, Elliott Yamin's current single and title track "Fight For Love" finally got a video this afternoon when it premiered on AOL's PopEater blog. Watch the video below:
The production here is leagues better than what was found on Elliott's two previous videos, and the storyline is relatively easy to follow. It's also great to see it end on a shot of his smile, which is worth showing off. P.S. is it just me or have we seen that girl somewhere before?

This time around, Elliott is sure to pull out a few more radio-friendly R&B offerings with pop-tinged hooks. From the album's extremely catchy first single and title track to the mid-tempo love track "You" and the radio ready "Apart From Me," things are sounding promising for this era.
Fight For Love comes out Tues., May 5, a week from today, and features production by big named industry figures including Jermaine Dupri and Stargate.

Digital sales roundup: "My Life Would Suck Without You" #6 (3/13/09)
There was a whole lot of Kelly Clarkson to go around Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart this week, as her "My Life Would Suck Without You" once again led all Idol-related tracks and seven other songs off her new studio offering All I Ever Wanted debuted on the chart, almost all of which will drop off in time for next week's chart.
"My Life" rose #9-6 thanks to the album release, with a 38% uptick selling 141.2k for the week. It has now sold a total of 1.288 million downloads. Other Kelly offerings that made appearances this week include "Already Gone" (#46, 32.4k), "If I Can't Have You" (#92, 15.8k), "I Do Not Hook Up" (#96, 14.9k), "Cry" (#112, 12.4k), "Don't Let Me Stop You" (#138, 10.5k), "All I Ever Wanted" (#181, 8.7k) and "Long Shot" (#183, 8.6k).
As hard to believe as it may be, there were other Idol alums represented on the chart. Carrie Underwood's "Home Sweet Home" saw a peachy debut at #10 with 112.2k, while her current single, "I Told You So," gained 30% with a 28-spot jump to #93, selling 15.7k for a total of 95.8k. Look for a huge increase next week thanks to the duet version of the song with Randy Travis being available and her performance of it on tonight's Idol results show.
The last debut by an Idol alum on this week's chart was Elliott Yamin's new single, "Fight For Love," which sold 9.9k for a #150 debut.

Track review: Elliott's "Fight For Love"
The “funky white boy” known as Elliott Yamin has returned to the scene with his latest single “Fight For Love.” The single will lead off his sophomore effort by the same title, due out May 5.
Picking up where he left off with the massive hit “Wait For You,” Yamin lends his soulful vocals to a highly stylized track full of meticulously crafted synths and a current-sounding beat configuration. Although the lyrics border on being very cheesy and almost make the song sound like it would be more suitable for David Archuleta, Yamin is able to make the song sound more mature.
Putting aside the unoriginal lyrics, Elliott Yamin shows that he is much more than a one hit wonder on “Fight For Love,” and radio will be glad to have new material to play.

Out today: Kelly Clarkson's 'All I Ever Wanted'
In an Idol first, two winners release their latest albums on the very same day. There is no question which one will emerge as the champ sales-wise, though, as Kelly Clarkson's fourth studio album All I Ever Wanted looks to steamroll the competition to a #1 berth. The album, which is available virtually everywhere in a standard and deluxe edition, still has a great amount of buzz despite leaking on the internet a few weeks ago via the Norwegian iTunes store.
Opening on a much, much smaller scale is Taylor Hicks' second official post-Idol studio album, not counting his Early Works disc that dropped late last year. Taylor's album is represented by the lead single "What's Right Is Right," which has not been heating up the charts like Kelly's "My Life Would Suck Without You."
We also see an EP from Diana DeGarmo, her first official release since her debut album Blue Skies in Dec. 2004.
And then there are singles from Elliott Yamin and Carrie Underwood, with the latter's Idol send-off tune hitting iTunes a week early. The former's new single, "Fight For Love," is also out on iTunes with both a radio edit and an extended version with an intro.

Impacting radio: March 10-April 7
The following are future single releases set for Idol alums over the course of the next month. The most impressive schedule at the moment is for David Cook, who is getting to simultaneous single releases to three separate formats, as the safe "Come Back to Me" hits airwaves at Top 40/Mainstream and Hot/Modern/AC on March 17 and 30, respectively, while the edgier "Bar-ba-sol" gets a shot at Rock on March 23.

Elliott Yamin's "Fight For Love" should be revving up for airplay come Tuesday, but so far it seems pretty quiet for the Season 5 soulman. Kelly Clarkson's "I Do Not Hook Up" has already received four spins according to Mediabase, despite the fact that its adds date is still more than a month away. Looks like kelly will have another hit on her hands if everything goes according to plan.

Elliott Yamin's "Fight For Love" leaks
Just days after Elliott Yamin did an impromptu a capella performance of his latest single, "Fight For Love," in a YouTube video with KISS FM DJ JoJo, the official studio version of the track has leaked. Listen to it below:
The single is not as strong as Elliott's singles from his debut, but it definitely could be a hit at radio. The lyrics are a bit cliche, and it seems better suited for David Archuleta, but Elliott will make it work.
"Fight For Love" will be released to digital retailers and radio on Tues., March 10. The yet-to-be-titled sophomore album is due out Tues., May 5.
