It was a wipeout in IDOL LIVE's 2010 edition of the poll of the week champion series, as readers were asked which 12th (or 13th)-place finalist is their favorite of all nine seasons.
It was most likely due to lack of participation that David Hernandez garnered 72% of all votes cast, which equates to 13 of the 18 votes. No other finalist managed to get more than one vote (5%), which suggests no 12th/13th-place finisher has a solid fan base.
Regardless, David will advance to the final round of the champion series, which we will revisit once all other placements are decided. In the next round, readers will be asked which 11th-place finalist is their favorite of all nine seasons. Voting will be open for exactly one week.

Poll of the week: Crystal Bowersox favorite Top 12 contestant
Now that thew two polls of the week have been condensed into one for the finals, this week's bragging rights of "favorite contestant among IDOL LIVE readers" go to Crystal Bowersox.
Crystal nabbed 14 votes, or 21%, just one vote over her chief rival Lee DeWyze's 13 votes (18%). But Siobhan Magnus was nipping at their heels, taking in 12 votes (18%).

IDOL LIVE Blog - Top 12 Results (3/17/10)
After last night's crowded collection of performances from one of the oldest bands currently touring, we must say goodbye to someone. This of course means they will miss out on the summer tour, which is a little depressing, but at least there will be 11 others to cheer him or her up!
In terms of guest performers, we get to see Orianthi, Ke$ha and David Cook rock out on stage.

IDOL LIVE predix: Top 12 Results
Last night's display of the Top 12's take on classics by The Rolling Stones went much better than many (including me) anticipated, but that still doesn't change the fact that someone must go home tonight. But as The Rolling Stones once sang, "Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday..."
With that said, read my predictions for how tonight will go below:

The bottom three will serve one purpose tonight, and that is to "wake up" people who have been letting Andrew skate by on some subpar performance over the past four weeks. The producers will probably try to frame it as a "shocker," but it really is anything but considering the competition as of late and how badly Andrew has been blowing it. Thus, by including him in the B3 tonight it will serve as a kick in the pants that will not only provide him with the proper wakeup call, but it will remind his fans that they can't fall asleep at the wheel.
Paige will be thrown in the bottom two because she probably deserves to be there, even though she wasn't as bad as many were predicting she'd be based on her laryngitis. Despite being in grave danger, Paige probably won't get enough of a boost from this appearance to launch her far ahead in the competition.
And then there's Lacey, who fits the bill as the perfect 12th-place finalist. She had underwhelming performances during the semifinals, she got mild comments from the judges and she performed fourth, which is one of the worst spots to perform at during Top 12-10 weeks. Add to this the fact that she sang "Ruby Tuesday" last night, which includes the lyrics "goodbye ruby Tuesday" and therefore is clearly about her. Thus, Lacey will be sent packing tonight.
In my original predictions, to my surprise I actually have Lacey leaving in 12th place, so maybe I'll start off the finals with a double win in terms of correct predictions.

IDOL LIVE Blog - Top 12 Perform (3/16/10)
Tonight the competition finally begins for real as we blog during the Top 12 finalists' performances as they take on songs from The Rolling Stones' catalog. The finalists got to select from a list of 50 songs, including hits like "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Start Me Up" and "Paint It Black." Who will pick what?

Flashback: Brandon Rogers' "You Can't Hurry Love"
It was exactly three seasons ago that Brandon Rogers performed his first (and last) song in the finals of Idol's sixth season. His take on Diana Ross's "You Can't Hurry Love" was unfortunately his weakest showing on the show, and it came back to bite him. Watch the performance below:
The judges were hardly forgiving of Brandon's forgotten lyrics or his sharp notes, as Simon said "complete letdown." Oh well, at least Brandon got to work with Diana Ross out of his time on the show.

Flashback: Carly Smithson's "Come Together"
Carly Smithson was a force to be reckoned with at the outset of Idol's seventh season. After breezing through the semifinals, Carly came out with a bang during Top 12 week on the first helping of Beatles night when she performed "Come Together." Watch the performance below:
Carly received praise from all three judges for this showing, which sent her into an excited state of disbelief, especially considering she expected Simon to once again declare her song choice "wrong." Carly's second song from The Beatles' catalog, "Blackbird," was not as big as a moment for her, but it still showed that she was a savvy contestant in terms of varying her performance styles.

Flashback: Leah LaBelle's "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
Leah LaBelle was widely considered to be a true contender on the third season of Idol at the outset, as she was selected as a wild card choice by Paula Abdul. Unfortunately, the then-17-year-old faltered on her most important performance when she took on The Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" during Top 12 week. Watch the performance below:
Despite her early exit, Leah has gone on to carve out a career in the music industry, taking one step at a time and making friends with some powerful figures and up-and-coming artists like Keri Hilson, Steph Jones and even Jordin Sparks. Leah is definitely one of the faces to watch in terms of new artists that will be rising in the ranks in years to come.

Analysis: "Predictable" doesn't begin to describe...
Who really thought Nick Mitchell would take the "final" spot last night over Adam Lambert? Do the producers think the audience is that stupid, that it would be more susprised that Adam made it over Nick than it would Kris Allen making it over Matt Giraud or Megan Corkrey?
Although the show did improve format-wise this week (i.e. the elimination of the parent/loved ones segment), it failed to capitalize on what would have made for a more interesting final reveal for the third spot. I wouldn't be surprised if a third of the audience just stopped watching after Kris was handed the second spot in the Top 12, as everyone and their mother knew Adam would make it since it was crystal clear he got the Gokey treatment on Wednesday.
Even Allison Iraheta's Top 12 spot could be spotted a mile away, so the whole hour was kind of useless in the whole results department, which is kind of a problem. And did we really have to see that montage set to "What a Wonderful World" again? If that doesn't scream "filler," I don't know what does.
And then there was the 12 semifinalists' pre-recorded sounding rendition of Ne-Yo's "Closer." If the performance is any indication of how this season will turn out, it gives the notion that it will be a guy-dominated season much more support, as the six girls sang about a total of three and a half lines.
Despite these blemishes, the show was otherwise pretty entertaining. Simon and Paula got into their normal spats, and Kara even engaged Simon head on, which I suspect we will begin to see more of as the season goes on.
The highlight of the show, however, was Brooke White's return to the Idol stage to perform her new single, "Hold Up My Heart." Brooke was refreshing both vocally and personality-wise, as her advice to the semifinalists of not "googling yourself" beckoned back to the same quirky Brooke that audiences fell in love with last season.
So far this Top 12 is a mixed bag. It's definitely strong on diversity of singing style and personality but it's short on diversity overall, which makes me think Lil Rounds is all but guaranteed a spot and Ju'Not Joyner could also be a great bet next week.
Possible wild card selections from this bunch are most likely Matt G. and Megan, but it's doubtful the judges would waste a few other spots on semifinalists from this group with the exception of Jasmine Murray, whom they all seem to like because she's "very commercial." Expect the majority of the picks to come from Group 3.
As for IDOL LIVE's predictions, we're 4-6 in the semifinals and 3-6 in the Top 12, so it's not looking all that great so far.

Analysis: Boring results show brings no surprises
And just like that, Group 1 of the Top 36 is no more. Kind of disappointing, isn't it? Unlike the past four seasons, this is the last we will see of most of the semifinalists that performed on Tuesday, save for the three that automatically advanced last night and of course whichever ones are lucky enough to be called back to perform as potential wildcard choices. With that in mind, is it safe to say that the Top 12 of Season 8 is off to a bang?
I think not.
Although Alexis Grace definitely was the strongest vocalist on Tuesday, she is lacking in star quality, which is something someone like Ann Marie Boskovich exuded. It's too bad that one performance pretty much dictates whether or not a contestant will advance the way this format is set up, whereas in years past all it took was for there to be two contestants that were worse than someone else for that person to stick around to try and improve their chances.
As for the way Ryan handled the reading of the results, it was very shoddy and disorganized. Really, Ryan, did anyone honestly think Danny didn't have the most votes of all 12 from that group? Did you not think it might be more exciting to announced Danny first, then announce Alexis and hold out on leaving it between Michael Sarver, Anoop Desai and Tatiana del Toro for the third ticket to the Top 12? Maybe it's just me, but I think that would have been much more watchable.
And people are complaining about Danny being insensitive to Tatiana right before the results were read. Honestly, what's he supposed to do, stand there and pretend to be nervous? Anyone who has been following this season from the beginning (or anyone with a computer) knew it was his for the taking, and so did he. On the contrary, however, the judges better yield on their incessant praise over him, because it could end up hurting him down the road (I mean you, Kara). At least Simon is there to hold down the fort.
On the positive side, Michael Johns and Carly Smithson sounded as good as always on their duet of "The Letter," even though I feel like I've seen that before. Hopefully there are more of those nice surprises than there are with the results, because if not, we're in for a long season.
As for IDOL LIVE's predictions, we're 2-3 in both the semifinals and the Top 12. Hopefully next week is more kind.

"Big surprises" ahead for the Top 12
Apparently the fun has just begun. Mike Darnell, FOX's president of alternative entertainment, revealed in an interview with TV Week that the Top 12 will feature one of the biggest surprises of all. Per Reality TV Magazine:
In an interview with TV Week, Mike Darnell said, “There’s a big surprise coming when we get to the top 12, but I can’t reveal it right now.” He said even the contestants will be surprised!Darnell went on to say the surprise will "not affect the core of the show," which makes it seem like not a huge deal.
The alleged surprise is not the fact that the Top 12 will be living together in a mansion (as they did in previous seasons) nor is it the fact that this will play a heavy role in the content of the show that makes it to TV time. Some are predicting perhaps there will be a Top 13/14 or the tour will include the entire Top 12, but these have been common predictions over the past few seasons every time there comes a rumor pertaining to the Top 12.
IDOL LIVE is willing to bet the judges will get to use an immunity each week to save someone they think is in danger of being cast off, but each contestant is only allowed one immunity and they would have to make the decision prior to the bottom 3 being announced, so that the contestant the judges give immunity to may in fact be very safe.
Just a guess, but it can't hurt when there are already a ton of nonsensical ones floating around.

Beatles night shows competition is still fluid
Besides the tired infighting between the judges, Ryan's usual flirting with Simon and a new monstrous set, the Top 12 for the most part managed to take control of the 25 limited Lennon-McCartney songs they had to choose from.
The show opened up on a forgettable note when Syesha Mercado tackled "Got to Get You Into My Life." Although the vocal wasn't all that bad, it really was very lifeless despite her use of the Earth, Wind and Fire arrangement. The arrangement factor truly played a big role in the night, as it made or broke many of the finalists' performances. In Chikezie's case, his folk-turned-southern rock interpretation of "She's a Woman" really validated why he was still in the competition, and his performance was actually one of the better ones. Carly Smithson also pulled off another surprise, as she put her special touch on "Come Together," one of her favorite songs. The sound was very reminiscent of something Sheryl Crow would do, and she won much praise from the judges. But in Kristy Lee Cook's case, the arrangement led to her downfall, as "Eight Days a Week" was never intended to be sung in an up-tempo country style.
While the arrangements were important factors in many performances, other finalists' vocals defined how well they did. In Ramiele Malubay's instance, her vocals on "In My Life" were pretty but too reserved, which garnered criticism from the judges that she played it "too safe." David Hernandez gave the word "melisma" a whole new meaning when he took on "I Saw Her Standing There," which also brought forth a barrage of calls to not overdo it, and even David declared he would "try to turn it down a notch" next week (if there is a next week).
Two consistent performers did even better tonight than in weeks prior. Coffee shop soul/pop chanteuse Brooke White delivered a knockout punch with a beautiful rendition of "Let It Be." Her talents on the piano coupled with her rich vocals really give her an under the radar frontrunner status. The other finalist that was on top of his game was David Cook. After he delivered a stellar rocked-out version of the Lionel Richie classic "Hello" last week, David again channeled Chris Daughtry in his performance of "Eleanor Rigby." He received praise from the judges as being a dark horse, with Simon even toying with the possibility of an outside shot of him winning.
Proving that falsettos should only be used every once in a while, Jason Castro's version of "If I Fell" gave Paula a heartfelt connection, but his vocals were otherwise very vulnerable and showed his style of singing definitely has limits. Amanda Overmyer was also only lukewarm this week after she nailed her song last week, which was possibly the only reason she made it through. Her take on "You Can't Do That" was a certified, signature rock 'n roll nurse performance, though it was not nearly as bad as some of her past ones. Michael Johns also was only so-so once again, as he sang "Across the Universe" well but didn't really go anywhere with it, which drew the ire of both Simon and Randy.
But the biggest shock of the entire night was hands down David Archuleta's awful Stevie Wonder version of "We Can Work It Out." The favorite to win did everything from forgetting the lyrics to losing his meter and missing some key notes. If this was the first time the American public saw him perform, David would be on the first flight back to Utah. But his dedicated fanbase and history of amazing performances will be more than enough to sail him through to next week.

'Idol' and...the Beatles?
Are American Idol and the Beatles headed for holy matrimony or a quick hookup followed by a messy breakup? Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning show Wednesday that Sony had agreed to allow the show's contestants to perform songs from the Lennon/McCartney songbook after six seasons of denying their requests. According to this EOnline article, there are plenty of tunes to choose from:
On the Sony/ATV website, there are more than 180 songs listed that are credited to either: Lennon-McCartney; McCartney, minus Lennon; Lennon-McCartney with Starkey (aka Ringo Starr); and Lennon-McCartney with Starkey and Harrison (as in George).Following Wednesday's announcement, RealityTVWorld.com's Christopher Rocchio reported that the Top 12 week's theme will in fact be songs from the band's songbook. This could either be a worthwhile gamble or a major disappointment. But who can really picture Alaina Whitaker taking on Yellow "Submarine" or Danny Noriega attempting "Hey Jude"?
