How ironic is it that the finalist who went home in eighth place tonight was IDOL LIVE readers' favorite Top 9 contestant in part two of the Top 9 edition of the poll of the week? Well, regardless, it happened.
Katie netted 31 votes, totaling 23% of all votes cast, which was two votes ahead of Siobhan's 29 votes (21%). Siobhan finished second in the poll of the week for the first time in four weeks.
The finalist who garnered the third-most votes for the week was none other than Lee, as he took in 20 (14%), which was ahead of Crystal's 17 votes (12%). Andrew, who left the show in ninth place tonight, only took in three votes (2%).

Poll of the week: Katie Stevens favorite Top 9 contestant (Pt. 2)
IDOL LIVE predix: Top 9 Results [Pt. 2]
The music of Elvis Presley was alive and well at CBS Studios in Hollywood last night, which was actually a nice change for this season. Even though Adam Lambert didn't deserve to be the Top 9's mentor, he met expectations and was able to actually give targeted advice to some of them (whether or not they took the advice was another issue).
With that said, read my predictions for how tonight will go below:

Andrew on the other hand should finally bite the dust tonight, as he was just inches away from exiting last week, and he delivered another underwhelming showing last night, with nowhere to go but up or out. By ditching the guitar and opting to go on a world tour around the Idol stage, he showed that with nothing but a mic in his hands, he really can't hold a candle (figuratively, anyway) to his peers.
And then there's Tim, who actually surprised a lot of people these past two weeks. He will probably finish in eighth because his fans will have assumed he was safe and that Aaron was in danger (whom many of them also like) so if they didn't waste the rest of their night watching Glee, they probably dedicated it to helping Aaron out. Therefore, Tim will be the "shocker" that really wasn't a shocker, and even though his time shouldn't be up yet considering others that are still on the show aren't nearly as much fun, he can look back and say he went out on a high note.
In my original predictions I have Aaron and leaving in ninth-place (just like I did last week) and Lee leaving in eighth-place, so I probably won't be right on either count but hey, why start winning now?
Since the Top 24 I have correctly predicted 5-15 eliminations and since the Top 12 I have correctly predicted 1-3 eliminations.

Flashback: Camile Velasco's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
Back on Idol's third season Camile Velasco took on Jasmine Trias in the "battle of the pretty Hawaian girls," and as Top 9 week demonstrated the competition was only big enough for one of them. As a result, Camile's version of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" during Elton John week ended up being her swan song while Jasmine narrowly escaped elimination. Watch the performance below:
Camile gave it her best but the song was too much of a storm for her to weather, and Simon's brutal critique was totally appropriate. Still, Camile has the perfect voice for an R&B career, and hopefully she will be able to make it in the industry sometime soon.

Judges using the save on Mike was the right move
But for one reason and one reason only - we will no longer have to worry about the judges using their gimmick of an excuse for power to save a singer no one really cares about anyway because this season is awful.
Don't get me wrong, Big Mike is a great guy and seems like he'd be fun to hang around, but even the judges realize how much of a failure this season has been so they're throwing in the towel and washing their hands of this ridiculous power. If they didn't do so, they would most likely get accused of being unfair for not using it on someone else or some other dumb complaint.
Alright, I'm done with my rant. Back to your regularly scheduled programming!

For the third week in a row, Siobhan has is the favorite Season 9 contestant among IDOL LIVE readers, as she pulled in 35 votes (26%) for the Top 9 edition of the poll.
Next up was Lee and his 28 votes, good for 21% of all votes cast this week. These numbers could end up going even higher based on last night's showing. In third place this week was the onetime front runner in the poll, Crystal, as she took in a still strong 25 votes (18%).
Surprisingly, Michael actually pulled in another vote (yes, vote as in singular) this week, so maybe that's a sign that the judges were supposed to waste their save on him tonight?

IDOL LIVE Blog - Top 9 Results (4/7/10)
Tonight's results will either be very boring or very annoying (if the judges use their cursed "save" gimmick). Hopefully neither happen and we get some excitement going, but short of Rihanna performing "Te Amo," it doesn't look like that will be happening.
Also, word on the street is that Clay Aiken will be performing as well, but I'll believe that when I see him walk out onto the stage. Scratch that, David Archuleta will perform "Imagine" (ugh) and Jason Derulo will sing "In My Head."

IDOL LIVE predix: Top 9 Results
Surprisingly, last night was the best performance episode of the season. That said, this season is till beyond saving. Still, it's nice to have a few alright showings here and there. Things could have been much worse considering the stature of songs the contestants had to choose from, but for the most part they stuck to what they know they can do well.
With that said, read my predictions for how tonight will go below:

For the first time this season since the finals began, not only will no girl be eliminated, but no girl will make an appearance in the bottom three tonight. Therefore, some might be "shocked...SHOCKED!" when Mike is tonight's third wheel among the Top 9 because the judges way over-hyped him last night (and I think they realize that by now). Fortunately for him, he will not spend much time in the B3.
More deserving of the spot is Andrew, who corned it up last night with a drowned out acoustic guitar spectacle and lousy vocals. True, he showed more personality this week and came across as a genuine guy with a distinct theme and all, but he's been skating around elimination for some time now and tonight will be the closest he comes to that danger to date. But fortunately for Crystal, Andrew will get to try once again to have Danny Gokey babies with Lee.
But then we get to Aaron, whose "Long and Winding Road" was a few pegs lower than that performed by the often compared to David Archuleta two seasons ago. It was probably the weakest showing last night, and considering he went first and was not in the B3 last week, there are many reasons why tonight is Aaron's (or Yoda's) time to say goodnight. As nice of a guy as he is, Aaron has virtually no shot at winning, so it wouldn't cause an uproar for him to leave quietly in 9th place.
In my original predictions I do indeed have Aaron leaving tonight, so it would be pretty cool if that actually happened.
Since the Top 24 I have correctly predicted 5-15 eliminations and since the Top 12 I have correctly predicted 1-3 eliminations.

IDOL LIVE Blog - Top 9 Perform (4/6/10)
Tonight Teflon Tim and the rest of the Top 9 take the stage to trip over themselves singing songs from the overdone Lennon/McCartney songbook. Will it be a repeat of Season 7's Top 12? Or maybe that season's Top 11? Or maybe it will be worse than both? I'm going with the latter just to be safe. Fortunately for us, "Imagine" isn't eligible since it's solo work by John Lennon.

Flashback: Mandisa's "Any Man of Mine"
Mandisa was a front runner early on in the competition during Idol's fifth season but she unfortunately got caught up in controversy as a result of misinterpreted comments she made at the outset of her Top 10 performance. The next week, Mandisa was out following a less than stellar performance of Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine" during Top 9 week's country night. Watch the performance below:
Even though this was not her strongest performance while on the show, Mandisa showed she could tackle genres that were very removed from her comfort zone and she gave a valiant effort despite the unfair criticism she had attracted.

Flashback: Syesha Mercado's "I Will Always Love You"
Syesha Mercado was many times written off as a non-factor on Idol's seventh season, but performances like her take on Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" during Top 9 week's Dolly Parton theme night
Even though the song has been performed countless times on Idol over the years in the style of Whitney Houston, Syesha was able to find a way to make the song work for her by a technical standpoint. It might have come off a little bit like a copycat performance, but there is no denying Syesha's vocals were first class here.

Flashback: John Stevens' "Crocodile Rock"
John Stevens provided one of the most unintentionally funny performances ever delivered on Idol during Season 3's Top 9 week with his take on Elton John's "Crocodile Rock." Relive the classic moment below:
Although John deserves plenty of props for trying on the song, his shrieky "la la la la la"s were enough to send any self-respecting artist's head into violent bouts of shaking of disapproval. Regardless of the fact that John would only last three more weeks on the show, this performance alone was worth him taking away a spot from more "deserving" contestants, and since he's a nice guy he gets a pass for the performance. That does not change the fact that it's memorable, though.

Flashback: Clay Aiken's "Everlasting Love"
Clay Aiken is unquestionably the glory note king of the Idol franchise, but when it comes to fast-paced selections, he does not retain his same powerful singing mantra. Just refresh your memory by watching his performance of "Everlasting Love" during Top 9 week's disco theme:
As usual, Clay's up-tempo singing style pleased Randy, Paula and the guest judge of the week (this week, Verdeen White of the group Earth, Wind & Fire), but left Simon unimpressed. In fact, he used the "T word" to describe his reaction to the performance. Even though it was not his greatest moment, Disco Week was a good indicator for Clay of what genre was not the best choice for him.

Flashback: Michael Johns' "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right"
Just one week before his shocking elimination, Michael Johns took on one of the most heartfelt songs from Dolly Parton's catalog, "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right," and turned the Idol stage into a veteran's showcase pedestal during Top 9 week. The magical performance can be relived below:
Although his time left on the show was not long, Michael showed that one spectacular performance could turn the tide in one's favor, even if only temporarily. If he had been given the chance to extend his time on the show, it's a good bet audiences would have seen comparable performances from MJ.

IDOL LIVE Blog: Top 9 Results (4/1/09)
Join us tonight as we blog during the results episode of the Top 9. Last night sure was something (and by "something" I mean something not very good), but tonight will probably be more exciting by a mile. Tonight's guest performers include a David Cook singing "Come Back to Me" in a pre-taped segment and a live performance of "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga. The blogcast will begin at 9 p.m. ET and will last one hour.
Tonight's blogcast will feature music from Bo Bice, David Cook, Sanjaya Malakar, Michael Sarver and Jordin Sparks.
IDOL LIVE predix: Top 9 Results
Last night's "top downloads" non-theme allowed for a few good efforts and a majority of forgettable and/or disappointing spectacles, which will be reflected in tonight's results. While the top three contestants were in a different league that the others' last night, there were six finalists that will play musical chairs to avoid landing in the bottom three, never mind elimination.
Without further ado, here are my predictions for the Top 9 results:

This is the curtain call. The final straw. The last hurrah. The end of the road. Whatever you want to call it, Megan's time on this show has run dry. She was cute for a little bit, then her vocals got really annoying really fast and she could never get out of her rut no matter how badly the judges (specifically Kara) wanted her to improve so as to not make them look dumb for putting her through as a wild card in the first place.
Scott will most likely land in the bottom three for a second week in a row because even though he gave a substantially better performance than the previous few weeks, he got a fair amount of praise from Simon that could in fact be his signature reverse psychology. Although it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to see Allison in there over him.
And then there's Anoop, who will come dangerously close to elimination tonight thanks to his jittery, karaoke-like tribute to Usher last night. He will land in the bottom two along with Megan, but the judges will not be forced to use their immunity on him because Megan will ultimately be the one leaving.
In my original predictions, I had Kris Allen going, but there's next to no chance of that happening thanks to the fact that he was in the pimp spot last night and he far and away delivered the strongest performance.
About last night: Play that funky music till you get eliminated
Last night's Top 9 performances showed that sometimes having a broad theme is not kind to finalists. Case in point: the "top downloads" theme was pretty much a wash, with songs by Billy Joel and even Celine Dion being acceptable. Since when are those songs considered to be "popular downloads"? Ryan's way of describing the theme itself was even discombobulated.
Before getting down to business Ryan was sure to ask Paula if she was hiding any props under the table, to which she answered in the negative. Simon was looking forward to Ryan and the artists being amazing, which was a nice thing for him to say.
Kicking off the night was Anoop, whose ill-advised foray into Usher territory was not the right way to begin things. His vocals on "Caught Up" were not all that bad, but the performance was all but a shadow of the real thing. When it came to the dancing portion of the performance, it was clear things were not going to recover. The judges' critiques were not anything to write home about, either. Look for Anoop to land in the bottom three tonight, especially after his snippy exchange with Kara.
When it came time for Megan to perform, things didn't go any smoother than usual considering she actually got to pick a song that she thought would showcase her talent well. Instead, she opted for "" by Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill, which may be a good song in its own right, but it sounded really out of place with her vocals on it. She sure looked the part, though, opting for a younger look this week. The fact that her major proponent, Kara, didn't even like it make things an uphill battle for Megan this week. Look for a definite bottom three appearance, with the high likelihood that she will be departing in ninth place.
Other disappointments last night include Lil's borefest on "I Surrender" and Scott's better-than-usual-but-still-not-good "I Love You Just the Way You Are." Simon's frustration with Lil is becoming more apparent each week, as he told her flat out "you've got to stop this" because she is a "much better" singer than the performance. Randy and Kara were all about name dropping when critiquing Lil, saying she should has picked a song by Keyshia Cole or Mariah Carey in order to sound more current.
As for Scott, Simon must have been using reverse psychology on him because he really was as good (or average) as usual. He just changed his look up a bit, which apparently can make him sound better than usual according to Simon. Paula should have held her own and stuck to her criticism of Scott relying on his baby grand as a crutch, because sooner or later he will need to switch it up.
Allison was not nearly as good as she was last week, but for the judges to pick her apart because of her Avril Lavigne-like wardrobe? That shows poor judgment. What is this, Project Runway? Allison may not be Gwen Stefani, but her rock edge shown through on her rendition of "Don't Speak." Regardless, she still has a strong possibility of landing in the bottom three tonight.
Someone that was pretty underrated last night was surely Matt Giraud, as his take on The Fray's "You Found Me" was not nearly as bad as the judges made it out to be. There were some off moments, but Matt showed that he could grab the attention of an audience and encapsulate them in his performance.
Whatever nonsense Randy and Kara were talking about with OneRepublic's "Apologize" should be disregarded by Matt, and he had a point when he told Kara he wanted to show that he's more than just an R&B artist when she basically gave him an ultimatum to either pick Pop/Rock or Pop/R&B as a genre to focus on. Apparently Kara does not believe artists should be well-versed in multiple genres of music.
And then there was Adam, who blew the roof off the house with his eccentric version of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music." It's not hard to do so when the song is a little on the wild side to begin with, but Adam managed to take the performance to a whole 'nother level, complete with screeching and shrieking. It definitely was not nearly as much of a credibility-builder as "The Tracks of My Tears," but it did what it was supposed to do for Adam. Paula's "shattering genius" comment was as far fetched as usual, while Simon kept it more real by saying at least it wasn't karaoke like many of the night's other performances.
Danny, on the other hand, was actually able to make people forget about last week's controversial performance with a heartwarming rendition of Rascal Flatts' "What Hurts the Most." While it wasn't perfect, the overall effect was powerful especially taking Danny's past into consideration. Paula and Kara gushed over the performance (what else is new?) while Simon validated the craziness by saying it was Danny's best effort yet. Maybe this exhibition will win over a lot of the naysayers? Probably not.
And Kris hands down had the best performance of the night, but he did not have a "moment." Moments only happen when they are unexpected and when the finalist states prior to the performance that he is trying to create a moment, things are just not as meaningful. Had Kris not said this in his pre-performance clip, though, he definitely would have had a moment.
Putting semantics aside, the vocals were a perfect fit for a perfect song choice, and the fact that he began the song unplugged added to the effect. Paula was absolutely correct about Kris taking a 30 some-odd-year-old song sound brand new, which demonstrates that Kris can certainly be taken as a relevant, current artist.
The tell tale sign of just what America thought of last night will not be who lands in the (alleged) bottom three, but who ultimately goes home. There is only one finalist that deserves to leave, if that person does not leave, there will be questions that will need answering.

IDOL LIVE Blog: Top 9 Perform (3/31/09)
Tonight we blog during the Top 9's performance show, when the remaining finalists give it their best shot when they pick songs that have reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart, meaning more or less songs that have reached #1 on iTunes. Will Adam sing Rihanna? Will Scott play the piano? Will Danny "Just Dance"? The blogcast begins at 8 p.m. ET and will last one hour and 25 minutes.

Ramiele hangs up her cowgirl boots
Although Ramiele Malubay's departure last night was the right decision, it was still sad to see her go. Ramiele sang a teary-eyed "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" as Carly Smithson, Brooke White, Kristy Lee Cook and Syesha Mercado rallied behind her, and went out strong.
The thing about Season 7 is there is no remaining contestant can be categorically described as "awful," something that has never happened in seasons past. Everyone has had at least just as many great nights as they have had off nights, and the judges' comments on the whole have skewed more positive.
Last night, audiences were treated to performances by The Clark Brothers and Dolly Parton, both of whom managed to get a rise out of the studio audience. Parton's graciousness was unmatched, and her performance coupled with the "Idol Gives Back" preview video caused Brooke to start crying right before she was told she was in the bottom 3. Her status as the third-lowest vote-getter was not as big of a surprise as many thought, because Brooke kind of blended in with the others and was perceived as being "boring."
Kristy Lee probably did not deserve her spot in the bottom 3 this week, but since everyone is really just that good, it does not make a huge difference one way or another. Odds are she or Jason Castro will be out next week.
The show was kicked off by a giant group performance of "9 to 5," including a venture to the judges' table and dancing in the audience. But the highlight of the night was probably when Simon "apologized" to four different directions of the studio, making up for all of the ones he owed different people like Carly, and he called her "cute." Very un-Simon-like.
Ryan took not-so-interesting 'Idol Live' phone calls, which were even more useless than last week. The most exciting question was probably to David Cook and Michael Johns about which song they would like to sing on the tour together, and Michael said "Islands In the Stream," which got lots of laughs.
Next week will be interesting, because there will be three doses of Idol, which will be enough to tire anyone out (inspirational songs or not).

Contestants go to Dollywood
Although one cannot picture David Cook or Michael Johns belting out a Dolly Parton song, nevermind sounding good on it, the unlikely happened last night when the Top 9 contestants actually pulled it off.
It is amazing to think of how many songs Parton has written (a whopping 3,000), sung or covered, which allowed the finalists to sing a wide variety of songs. But most elected to stay faithful to Parton's arrangements.
After Ryan's unfunny attempt at an April Fool's joke (which 15% of Americans probably believed), Brooke White kicked off the show with the hit "Jolene," which she performed while playing guitar and surrounded by a "traveling troupe" of a percussionist, violinist and backup singer. Her vocals were not bad but her performance was very tedious. Simon did not like this setup at all, going as far as calling the violinist "weird." Brooke continued her bad habit of talking over the judges (mostly Simon), but Paula was just as guilty.
Another arrangement that was faithful to the original was Kristy Lee Cook's "Coat of Many Colors." Although she was not nearly as on par as she was last week, Kristy Lee looked and sounded the part for sure. In fact, she looked very much like fellow country singer Taylor Swift, which will probably do more harm than good to her chances this week. Simon's comment of Kristy Lee being "pleasant but forgettable" could also do her in. Look for a bottom 3 appearance.
Taking a huge departure from last week, David Cook surprised many people by choosing a song called "Little Sparrow." But David is the master of rearrangement, and this week was no exception. The performance was not as spectacular as last week, but he still managed soulful vocals while maintaining his reputation as a rock star. Paula seemed more impressed with his haircut than his performance, but still praised him for being "well-rounded," while Randy thought it was another consistent week for David.
Vocally, Carly Smithson was on target with "Here You Come Again." Dolly Parton was right when she said Carly picked the right song, and Paula called her performance "glorious." Simon was more distracted by her outfit, which probably took away from his perception of her performance.
And then there was Syesha Mercado, who tackled the predictable "I Will Always Love You." But what she decided to do with her performance was what set her apart from all the other Whitney Houston wannabes - she fused Houston's arrangement with Parton's, as if she gave the song two different personalities. The only problem was the second half was not nearly as beautiful as the first, because whenever a singer tries to sing like Whitney, she never quite makes it. Paula said Syesha's voice has a "velvety tone," while Randy said she "took on the biggest tiger of the night" and did well. Simon said it was a good but not fantastic version of the song, which he called "one of the greatest pop songs ever written."
In terms of metaphors, Ramiele Malubay's take on "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" was the bottom of the barrel of the night. She was still pretty good, but her performance paled in comparison to the others' performances. Randy gave it a 6.5 out of 10, while Simon said it was reminiscent of what would be heard on a cruise ship. Cue the bottom 3 music.
Jason Castro is another one in danger, as he delivered a glassy-eyed performance of "Travellin' Thru." He actually sounded good once Parton got through making jokes about his dreads, but he looked lifeless. Randy and Paula were easier on him than Simon, as he said he "didn't like it at all." Reserve the final bottom 3 ticket for Jason.
David Archuleta had Simon back on his side after being "absolutely on the money" with his song choice of "Smoky Mountain Memories." He nailed all the high notes and was strong throughout, earning him much praise from the judges. Parton said David is full of emotion and can become a really great singer.
And Michael Johns wrapped up the night with his version of "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right."Michael was spectacular with the high notes he reached, and put a major bluesy feel on the song while still coming off as a rocker. Simon said this was the best he had heard him yet, and although the judges had only seconds to get their points across, Michael seemed to be all smiles with their praise.
So tonight, look for a pretty predictable bottom 3 and elimination.
