In what had to be the most competitive round of IDOL LIVE's 2010 edition of the poll of the week champion series, Season 5's Kellie Pickler ruled her fellow sixth-place finalists.
Kellie nabbed 13 votes, or 35% of all 37 votes cast, compared with Season 7's Carly Smithson's 12 votes (32%) and the club's newest member, Siobhan Magnus of Season 9, at nine votes (24%). These three independent women were the only ones who really excited IDOL LIVE readers, and it's easy to see why when considering their not so popular comrades from the six other seasons.
In the next round, readers will be asked which 5th-place finalist is their favorite of all nine seasons. Voting will be open for exactly one week.

Tonight Teflon Tim and the rest of the Top 9 take the stage to trip over themselves singing songs from the overdone Lennon/McCartney songbook. Will it be a repeat of Season 7's Top 12? 'Idol' odds 'n ends: Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young join the cast of 'Hair'
The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:
>It was revealed this week that Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young will be members of the new cast taking over the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Hair starting Tues., March 9. According to an article on NYTimes.com:
Mr. Young, who made his Broadway debut in 2008 as Kenickie in the last revival of “Grease,” had been previously reported as in negotiations to play the merry-making hippie in “Hair.” (Berger does more audience crowd work than anyone else in the production.)
Ms. DeGarmo, who has been rumored for awhile as in line for a role in “Hair,” had her Broadway debut in 2006 as the character Penny Pingleton in the musical “Hairspary."
BroadwayWorld.com also came up with video of the new cast rehearsing "Let the Sun Shine In," which can be viewed below:
The show calls the Al Hirschfield Theater home. No word yet on when Diana's and Ace's engagements will run up.

>For the first time in six years, an episode of Idol did not finish first in its time slot, as Wednesday's Top 24 reveal finished behind NBC's broadcast of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The Olympics garnered a 9.0 with 30.07 million viewers in the 9 p.m. hour, while Idol was only able to manage a 6.9 with 18.42 million viewers. This came one day after the Olympics' 5.1 and 19.74 million viewers weren't enough to pass Idol's 9.1 and 24.64 million viewers.
>Ayla Brown had a busy week in terms of nationally televised appearances, as she sat down with Joy Behar and even performed her single "Pick It Up" on FOX & Friends. One of the more interesting appearances was her interview on ABC News NOW's What's the Buzz? on Monday, where she talked about a challenge she and her dad made to President Obama. Out today: Katharine McPhee's "Had It All," Phil Stacey's 'Into the Light'
For the first time in a while, a new Idol-related single sees its release as an exclusive download at iTunes in the form of Katharine McPhee's "Had It All." The song, which was penned by Mitch Allan, David Hodges & Kara DioGuardi, is the first single off Katharine's upcoming release Unbroken, which is due out Tues., Oct. 6.
Also out today is Phil Stacey's sophomore album Into the Light, which is courtesy of Reunion Records. The album, which features the lead single "You're Not Shaken," is in the Contemporary Christian genre, a departure from his previous experiments in country music.

Free downloads: Brooke White's "Follow Me," Michael Johns' "Heart On My Sleeve"
Following in the footsteps of Phil Stacey, two other Idol alums are featuring singles of theirs as free downloads available on Amazon MP3. Brooke White's song "Follow Me" from her debut album Songs From the Attic and Michael Johns' current single "Heart On My Sleeve" off his new album Hold Back My Heart are now available to download on the digital music retailer.
There is little doubt that the fact that the songs are free is for the purpose of generating interest in the two seventh season finalists' albums, as Brooke just released her sophomore effort High Hopes & Heartbreak a few weeks ago. So far, things seem to be working, as "Follow Me" is currently #3 on Amazon's Top Free Songs chart and "Heart On My Sleeve" is listening to the former's title, as it is right behind at #4. Back when Phil's single "You're Not Shaken" was available to download free of charge, it managed to get to #2 on Amazon's Top Overall Songs chart.
Regardless of whether or not these freebies result in higher album sales, they should bot be passed up by Idol fans at any cost (unless, of course, you already own the albums these songs appear on).

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Kimberly Caldwell signs with Vanguard
The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:
>It was announced on Wednesday via a press release that Season 2 seventh-place finalist Kimberly Caldwell has signed with Vanguard Records. Kimberly had the following to say about the signing:Kimberly stated, "There are no words that can truly express how thrilled I am about joining the Vanguard Records family. Music has always been my first love so I'm beyond excited to release my debut album and it's such an honor to get to do so alongside the amazing artists who call Vanguard home."

>Kelly Clarkson will be one of four female artists taking part in VH1's Divas special alongside Miley Cyrus, Leona Lewis and Adele. Per the press release issued on Tuesday:Continuing in true Divas tradition, the evening will feature a night of unforgettable performances from various performers, presenters and special guests. Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.
This is the first Divas special the network has hosted since 2005. VH1's Divas will be broadcast live on VH1 from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Howard Gilman Opera House on Thurs., Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. ET.

Poll of the week: Fans still pick Pickler
It was a spirited week of voting on IDOL LIVE's poll of the week champion series for the favorite sixth-place finalist of all eight seasons, and the competition broke the win streak of Season 7 finalists for the first time this voting period.
Leave it to Kellie Pickler and her faithful fans to stand in the way of Carly Smithson and her equally passionate fans. The fifth season's lovable country star netted 296 of the 582 total votes, which equated to 50%. In comparison, Carly was able to take in 267 votes (45%). The two were tied in the count with just one hour left to vote, which is when Kellie's fans eked out a win by fewer than 30 votes.
The poll's six other contenders failed to excite voters, as Anoop Desai only took in nine votes (1%), and Constantine Maroulis was only able to generate six votes (1%).
In the next installment of IDOL LIVE's poll of the week champion series, readers are asked which fifth-place finalist is their favorite of all eight seasons. Voting will be open for exactly one week.

It's always nice to add new music by Idol alums to your collection. It's even nicer when the music is free (legally free, that is). This week, two former contestants from the show's sixth season are allowing fans to download a song of theirs free of charge.
Phil Stacey, who is currently embarking on a career in Contemporary Christian Music after a failed attempt at country music, has his new single, "You're Not Shaken," available to download on Amazon MP3. The song will appear on Phil's upcoming album Into the Light, due out Tues., Aug. 25.
Similarly, Top 20 semifinalist Leslie Hunt has her new single, "American Dream Man," available to download on her official site. Her upcoming album, Your Hair Is On Fire, is set for a Tues., Aug. 4 release.
Whether or not you're fans of Phil and Leslie, both songs are definitely worth looking into.

'Idol' odds 'n ends: Diana's Aussie hacker gets 26 months
The following are Idol-related odds and ends that happened this week:
>Diana DeGarmo's Australian cyber-stalker of three years, Tanya Maree Quattrocchi, has finally been sentenced to prison for 26 months after she ignored her probation and returned to hacking the Season 3 runner-up's MySpace in addition to exhibiting other stalking behaviors. This is the second time Quattrocchi has been convicted of harassing Diana since 2006.
>David Cook visited NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Monday to perform his latest single "Come Back to Me." Watch the performance below:
Following his performance, Cook briefly spoke with Fallon and one of his guests for the episode, The Amazing Kreskin, who said he could have told Cook he was going to win last year.
>Michael D. Ayers of Billboard wrote a preview article of Michael Johns' upcoming album Hold Back My Heart, due out June 23 courtesy of TRP Records. The article said the material on Michael's album will sound "more like the neo-soul of Ray LaMontagne and James Blunt than the polished mega-pop that "Idol" tends to be associated with."

IDOL LIVE Blog: Top 11 Perform (3/17/09)
After a messy first week in the finals, the Top 11 finalists take to the stage tonight to perform the best the Grand Ole Opry has to offer. The blogcast will begin at 8 p.m. ET and will last two hours. Unfortunately, there will be no controversies with the phone lines to liven tonight up. Seeing Megan and Adam attempt country songs will be a little interesting, though, so maybe it won't be all that bad.

IDOL LIVE Blog - Auditions, Pt. 7 (1/29/09)
Join us tonight as we blog during the seventh and final auditions round of the season, as we hear from the people of New York City and San Juan, Puerto Rico (all 300 that showed up to the latter). It will be interesting to see what kind of camera shots are used in San Juan to mimic the packed houses seen in all the other audition stops. The blogcast will run an hour despite the fact that two cities will be covered.

Phil Stacey signs with Reunion
After parting ways with previous record label Lyric Street last November, Phil Stacey has announced via his official music MySpace blog that he has signed with Christian label Reunion Records, a sub-label of the Sony BMG umbrella. Per his blog entry, Phil said:
I am working on the record with producer Brown Bannister. He is amazing at what he does and we have some phenomenal material to work with.Phil also stated he is hoping for a summer release but there is nothing set in stone.
Phil's debut album sold roughly 36k copies before he left his former label. This is the second Idol re-signing in three days, coming on the heels of news that Katharine McPhee has signed with Verve Forecast.

IDOL LIVE's Top 10 most memorable moments of 2008 - Part 2
And now the continuation of IDOL LIVE's Top 10 most memorable moments of 2008. If you missed moments #10-6, catch up before you proceed.
05) Clay Aiken (finally) comes out
If this wasn't Hollywood's worst kept secret, this story would have been sitting in the top spot for sure. Season 2's runner-up had dodged the gay rumors for years before finally deciding to put an end to them in September after an awkward in vitro fertilization with record producer Jaymes Foster that gave Clay Aiken a son earlier this year.
Only time will tell if this decision was a wise one for his career, but conventional wisdom says any news could propel his next album over 156k copies.
04) Idol alums' stars burn out
Although this was more of a series of moments, collectively they warrant an important news story that has landed at #4 on this countdown. It is no secret that Idol is not an instant success story for everyone that is fortunate to become a part of the franchise, but it is alarming when finalists that actually finished near (or at) the top are shown the door.
It began when Ruben Studdard lost his record deal with J Records in the final days of 2007, then became a bigger story when Season 5's top two finalists Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee were dropped by Arista and RCA Redords, respectively, in January. Then Blake Lewis was released from his contract in June and Phil Stacey was released/dropped from his deal in October. And the latest casualty was in fact Season 7's own seventh-place finalist Kristy Lee Cook, who was dropped for the second time by Arista Nashville in December.
Although things are looking good for the latest crop of finalists, these droppings are surely a word to the wise that winning Idol is not even enough to guarantee a fruitful career of stardom in the music business.
03) Paula's crazed fan commits suicide
In what has to be one of the most bizarre Idol-related stories of 2008, Paula Abdul was left in a frenzied state following the shocking suicide of a crazed stalker named Paula Goodspeed just outside of her house in November.
The fact that Goodspeed was once featured as one of those token "bad auditionees" on Idol in Season 5 led to a controversy between Abdul and Idol execs over the decision to include Goodspeed's audition for entertainment value despite being against her wishes. The two sides aired their dirty laundry over the course of a few days in the media before Paula was told to put a lid on it. This story definitely sums up the tensions that have settled in among the Idol family and will only continue to strengthen before they burst.
02) Jennifer Hudson's family tragedy+(9-19-08).jpg)
Even more tragic than the death of Goodspeed was the family tragedy that claimed the lives of third season seventh-place finalist Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew. The news was something that gripped the nation and even prompted a statement to be issued from the president-elect. It was later learned that Jennifer's brother-in-law, William Balfour, was the chief suspect in the rampage and he was charged with the murders shorty after.
The extremely painful situation caused Jennifer to cut promotion for her self-titled album and film The Secret Life of Bees short, and she has not made any statements in public on the tragedy. Hopefully 2009 is kinder to Jennifer, maybe a Grammy win is in store?
01) David Cook wins American Idol
Yes, it's predictable, but the story on its own deserves #1. A 25-year-old bartender/beer-pourer rising to fame as a result of his ill brother's musical aspirations, only to be challenged for the crown by a like-named 17-year-old from Utah. Although there was much competition on his road to success, David Cook was able to personalize every performance he delivered on the show and connect with his fans on a whole new level.
If there's one thing Cook's win proved, it is that America loves to see a success story. And judging by his album sales to date, it looks like America loves his music as well.

Arista Nashville KO's KLC
In what has to be one of the quickest turnarounds for an Idol alum to be signed and dropped, Kristy Lee Cook has been shown the door at Arista Nashville for the second time.
After being signed in June, Kristy Lee released a second album (she had previously been signed before her time on Idol) with the label's "help" but it never really caught on, and her single "15 Minutes of Shame" barely registered any airplay. Five-and-a-half months later, it looks like she might have to pursue another line of work unless a competing label wants to go out on a limb and pick her up. But in the current music climate, that appears unlikely.
Some other quick Idol drops are as follows (specific dates are when the news of a signing/dropping was made public):

Hopefully this is the last drop for a while, but IDOL LIVE is willing to bet Fantasia will be the next to lose her deal.
Kristy Lee's 5.5 months takes the cake in terms of brevity of calling a record label home, and it looks like it may be a while before someone else steals that title away from her.

Phil Stacey leaves Lyric Street
Phil Stacey is the latest casualty of selling few copies of his debut album and joins a long list of Idol alums that have been either dropped or terminated their contracts due to low sales.
Billboard.biz reported that Phil and his label, Lyric Street Records, have parted ways. One can only imagine it is the result of Phil's debut album's sales, which have topped off at 36k copies since its April 29 release. Hopefully he can find a nice home at an indie label, or maybe he can become a songwriter.
Regardless of the drop, Phil is still scheduled to be serving as the grand marshal of the 2008 Nashville Christmas Parade. It will kick off at the corner of 6th and Broadway and will end at JP Field. The parade will be held on Fri., Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.

Poll of the week: Sparks fly for Jordin
In the sixth installment of the debut album champion series for the IDOL LIVE poll of the week, Jordin Sparks' debut album decimated all competition. Jordin Sparks took home 47 of the total 67 votes, or an overwhelming 71%.
Surprisingly, Blake Lewis did not place second in the poll, rather his Audio Day Dream had to settle for third place with six votes (8%). Instead, Phil Stacey's debut self-titled album was runner-up with seven votes, or 10% of the poll's total take. No other album included in the poll was able to muster more than two votes.

IDOL LIVE poll of the week - Kellie kills the competition
Kellie Pickler absolutely destroyed the competition with a wide sample in last week's IDOL LIVE poll of the week. The Season 5 sixth-place finalist ran away with 57 votes, good for 76% of the total vote. The next closest finisher was Season 7's Carly Smithson, who garnered 17% of the vote.
