Kat: "I'm not making a country record, dont worry!"

Katharine McPhee caught up with a few fans on the streets of New York City a few days ago to sign autographs before getting into a car. When mentioning the fact that she was working on her sophomore album in Nashville, Kat blurted out "I'm not making a country record, don't worry!" as if that was a real concern. Watch the exchange below:

Just the thought of Kat singing "When God Fearin' Women Get the Blues" is a bit off-putting, but it's good to know she's working on music. Hopefully it will be more in the vein of her Japan Airlines commercial jingle than her offering on The House Bunny's soundtrack.

'College' DOA, 'House Bunny' holds steady

As expected, College was an universal box office bomb this Labor Day weekend. The film, which starred Season 5's 11th-place finalist, Kevin Covais, only mustered $2.1 million from 2,123 theatres nationwide for the traditional 3-day weekend and only $2.6 million for the extended 4-day weekend according to studio estimates on BoxOfficeMojo.com. It came in on the charts at #15 and likely suffered due to the over saturation of comedies in the marketplace.

As for its critical reception, College currently has an awful 14% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com, taking into account its total of only 14 professional reviews. User reviews are a little more kind, as it currently has a B- from 376 users on Yahoo!Movies.

Katharine McPhee's The House Bunny was another story, as the hit comedy showed staying power for the weekend as it dropped from #2-4 with $8.3 million for the 3-day and $10.2 million for the 4-day. Its total now sits at $29.8 million, which is a great number all things considered. It dropped 42.9% weekend-to-weekend and averaged $3,058 from its 2,714 theatres.

The overall weekend box office was nothing special, so it will most likely be even worse this coming weekend taking into account the fact that it is not a holiday weekend.

'House Bunny' final figures: $14.2 million weekend

Although it was possible The House Bunny could have seen a rise on the weekend box office chart when actuals came in it was the more likely scenario that came to fruition. Despite a drop from $15.1 million to $14,533,702, Katharine McPhee's debut film posted a more than respectable number for its opening weekend according to BoxOfficeMojo.com and will sail past $40 million for its total take.

Its hopes for an improvement from #2-1 were not helped by Tropic Thunder's weekend take increase by $100k when actuals come in. It's still too early to tell how Bunny will fare in the coming weeks, but Labor Day weekend has always been kind to the film industry so it should have one more week before it sees a drastic drop.

Kat finishes second...again

After months of anticipation, Katharine McPhee's major studio acting debut in Sony's The House Bunny finally hit theatres across the nation this weekend. Although McPhans never doubted the hilarity of the movie's subject matter, its box office performance was much more unpredictable.

But fans were elated to discover that Bunny in fact beat most experts' expectations, as it posted a solid $15.1 million weekend according to early estimates from BoxOfficeMojo.com. Despite the higher than expected figure, it was only good enough for a No. 2 finish, as estimates are giving Tropic Thunder a $1 million advantage and a second week at the top. When actuals are released tomorrow afternoon, however, it is possible that Bunny could squeak out a win.

Bunny, which had a production budget set at $25 million, looks to become a late summer hit. On the ratings front, the film is averaging a 41% on RottenTomatoes.com, as it received 28 positive reviews out of a total of 68. This score led those of the three other films that received wide releases for the weekend. As for user reviews, the film currently has a B+ from a total of 831 ratings on Yahoo! Movies.

Although one film cannot determine an up and coming actor's future success, it looks like Katharine at least began her film career on a positive note. As for Kevin Covais' debut in this coming week's College, one can only guess what the outcome will be.

Katharine on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'

Katharine McPhee last night made her first appearance on the talk show circuit in support of her film debut in The House Bunny (Aug. 22) when she appeared on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live. The interview was particularly strange, as Jimmy was hung up on a story of Kat suffering a wardrobe malfunction will riding a dolphin on her vacation in Cabo, which eventually went places even Kat must have been surprised. Watch the interview below:

Jimmy also showed the now infamous clip of Tyra Banks feeling Kat's breasts on her talk show last year, which came out of nowhere. Kat did say that her sophomore album should be out in 2009, but did not divulge any specifics except for the fact that she is working with producer David Foster.

Katharine in Maxim's "Summer's Hottest Starlets" issue

In anticipation of the release of her first feature film The House Bunny, Katharine McPhee is recognized as one of Maxim magazine's "summer's hottest starlets" in its latest issue. In addition to the photo at the right, the following blurb is included in the magazine:

KATHARINE McPHEE

She charmed us with her voice as the most desirable American Idol runner-up since Clay Aiken, and now--one hit solo record and a nod as one of People's "100 Most Beautiful" later--Katharine is stretching her acting skills to the max by playing a frumpy, socially maladjusted sorority sister who gets a much-needed makeover in The House Bunny.

Breakout moment: Walking arm in arm with the reformed, and now gorgeous, ladies of Zeta House, McPhee steals the scene--and announces a big screen presence that's built to last.
The August edition of the magazine is currently on newsstands and features Amanda Heard on the cover. The House Bunny hits theatres nationwide on Aug. 22.

Rumors that Katharine would be appearing in the film have been circling now for months, but the news was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. Below is a synopsis of the plot:

Bentley...plays a writer who goes on a downward spiral when his father dies, causing his assistant (McPhee) to start investigating whether his muse as well as narrator for his stories (Anita Briem) is a figment of his imagination.
The independent film, which is described as a "psychological drama," will begin shooting in August, the same month Katharine's The House Bunny opens in cineplexes nationwide.
