After what looked like a good chance at retaining its peak position on the chart, Carrie Underwood's third studio album Play On fell two spots to #3 according to HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart.
The actual sales drop was 60% to 125.2k. For comparative purposes, in Carnival Ride's second week, it fell 68% to 170.1k. Putting things into perspective, these numbers are not all that bad, and will hopefully trend upward when Billboard posts finalized figures later this week.
In other Carrie-related news, AllAccess.com revealed that the second single off Play On will in fact be "Temporary Home," going for adds on Mon., Dec. 14, as I speculated earlier. This is a great decision because it will be the perfect song for country radio during the Christmas season and carrying over into the new year.

'Idol' BB 200: 'Play On' #1 (11/21/09)
Although full numbers for Idol-related discs are not available for the latest edition of the Billboard Top 200 album sales chart, there are sales data available for country artists from the franchise.
Leading the charge was of course Carrie Underwood, whose third studio album Play On came in at #1 in its first week of sales with 317.7k copies sold. This is the second-highest bow Carrie has seen for one of her albums, as it bests the 315k her first album Some Hearts moved in its opening week and falls below the 527k her previous effort Carnival Ride pulled in.
The only other Idol-related sales to be revealed were those for Kellie Pickler's self-titled sophomore album, which was up 20% in sales to 3.2k copies for a total of 332k. It moved ahead 13 spots to #169.

HITS predix: Carrie Underwood's 'Play On' 300-350k
In a not so surprising turn, HITS Daily Double's sales predictions for the debut of Carrie Underwood's latest album Play On are pegging the disc to come in at No. 1 with somewhere in the vicinity of 300-350k copies.
This guesstimate is pretty much in line with my initial prediction of 365k, and even if Play On hits the lower end of HDD's projections, minimal declines are all but assured considering the promo schedule Carrie has lined up for herself over the next month.
For historical purposes, this release will most likely fall between Carrie's previous album bows, with Some Hearts coming in with 314.5k in November 2005 and Carnival Ride taking in 527.1k in October 2007.

IDOL LIVE predix: Carrie Underwood's 'Play On'
Hitting stores and digital retailers nationwide tomorrow is Play On, the latest release from Season4 champ Carrie Underwood. After making huge waves with her first two releases, Carrie looks to capitalize on good ol' fashioned promotion and a future no. 1 single in "Cowboy Casanova."
Play On will get a good amount of help from televised appearances by Carrie this week, including The Late Show with David Letterman tonight and Good Morning America tomorrow in addition to countless other radio station interviews and wall-to-wall coverage of the release on CMT.
Although Carrie's previous release, Carnival Ride, managed 527k copies in its debut week in October 2007, album sales as a whole have continued to depreciate since then. Therefore, even though Carrie remains popular and this is the first full new release from her in over two years, it would be conceivable that this album's first week sales will not eclipse those numbers.
As for competition, Carrie virtually has the whole week to herself, which will greatly increase her chances of getting a head start on the holiday shopping season. The fact that Play On will be beating the rush will increase its chances of being an impulse buy in the weeks to come when Idol fans are out purchasing the newest batch of releases from the franchise, but what will this mean for its launch week numbers?
Taking all these factors into consideration, it seems plausible that Play On will debut in the vicinity of 365k copies this week, and will most definitely pass the platinum benchmark by Christmas. On the Billboard 200 chart, the album will start out at #1, which will make it Carrie's third album to hit the top spot.
This of course is ahead of Some Hearts' 315k debut in November 2005 and behind Carnival Ride's maiden voyage, but is very healthy for this day and age.

Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta both reveal album titles
After Kris Allen confirmed his debut album last week to be self-titled, both Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta opted for more creative titles (that's not a knock at Kris' talent in title-picking, so don't take it that way).
Adam confirmed his post-Idol album due out Mon., Oct. 23, will be titled For Your Entertainment, while Allison's album will be called Just Like You. Both albums can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com, with Adam's currently sitting at #7 and Allison's coming in at #149. Neither albums have seen their cover art revealed yet, but those should be the next pieces of the puzzle to fall into place.
So what do you think of the titles? I think Adam's fits him to a T, while Allison's is a little on the dull side. Still, album titles mean nothing about the quality of an album's material (Carnival Ride, anyone?)

Carrie Underwood's 'Play On' out Nov. 3
After months of waiting, we finally know the album title and cover art of Carrie Underwood's highly anticipated third studio album - Play On. The notification came in the form of a news item posted on Carrie's official Web site, which was accompanied by an update sent out to the country star's following on Facebook. Per the news item:Releasing November 3, Play On draws its title from the name of a song featured on the new album, but it’s certainly appropriate for the feelings of the countless fans who’ve come to love Carrie’s music over the past four years. Since the release of her debut album in 2005, Underwood has amassed sales of more than 10 million albums with Some Hearts and 2007’s Carnival Ride.
The album is once again produced by Mark Bright (Some Hearts, Carnival Ride) and the yet-to-be identified first single will be released in mid-September and is rumored to be the uptempo "Cowboy Casanova."

'Idol' BB 200: 'Leave This Town' #9 (9/5/09)
After going without complete, reliable album sales data for Idol alums for a month, we finally have a full update!
Upon analyzing the numbers, what we found was a host of steadily declining entries that accurately represent the performance of most albums on the overall chart. Leading things off was Daughtry's Leave This Town, which slid 12% in sales to 33.3k copies, accompanied by a #8-9 decrease on the chart. It has sold 547.4k in its first month-and-a-half of release. The band's first effort, however, saw a 4% uptick in sales to 4.3k and actually went up one spot to #104, marking a current tally of 4.517 million copies.
Up second was Jordin Sparks' Battlefield, which fell #54-63 thanks to a 14% sales dip to 7.3k. It has only sold 92.6k to date. Following Jordin was another winner, Kelly Clarkson, who witnessed her All I Ever Wanted slip a similar 14% in sales to 5.8k for a total of 680.2k. On the chart side, it was down 13 spots to #80.
Next up was the random exclusive Season 8 5-song EP, which was down #85-108 to 4.1k following a sales dip of 21%. It has sold 33.7k copies in a matter of weeks. The other Season 8 entry, the Walmart exclusive album, was off 31 spots to #147 with a weekly take of 3k for a current total of 60.9k It was down by 20% compared to the previous week.
A pair of female country artists had albums separated by just three spots, as Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride was down #96-114 and Kellie Pickler's Kellie Pickler fell #93-117. The former album was down 13% to 3.9k for a total of 2.954 million, while the latter slipped 21% to 3.8k for a total of 297.8k.
David Cook's self-titled post-Idol album was off 18% and down 23 spots to #122, selling 3.6k for a total to date of 1.226 million copies.

'Idol' BB 200: 'Leave This Town' #2 (8/15/09)
It was another good week for Idol alums, particularly Daughtry, on the Billboard Top 200 chart for the chart week of Aug. 15.
Chris and the boys saw their sophomore release Leave This Town hold steady at #2 despite a 38% drop in sales to 62k. The album's total is 432.4k after three weeks. Their other entry, Daughtry, saw positive movement as it climbed #84-78 with 4.9k, down 8% for a total of 4.504 million.
Last week's new entry, Jordin Sparks' Battlefield, tumbled 63% to 17.7k for a two-week total of 65.6k copies. On the chart side it fell 14 spots to #21. Next up was Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted, which surged ahead 27 spots to #59 thanks to a sales bump of 30%. It claimed another 6.8k copies for the week for a total of 661.4k.
Following Kelly was the Season 8 Walmart exclusive album, which received an additional 6k despite a 26% decrease in sales for a 49.3k total. It slipped #53-65 for the week. Kellie Pickler saw her sophomore album slip in sales but rise on the chart, as it was down 5% to 5.7k but up three spots to #69. It has sold 283.7k copies to date.
Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride saw positive activity on both fronts, as its sales jumped 9% to 5.5k copies and it rose on the chart 16 spots to #72 for a total of 2.940 million. And David Cook familiarly closed out Idol representation on the Billboard 200, as his self-titled album took in 4.1k copies, off 14% from the previous week, for a total of 1.214 million. In the chart rankings, it was only off three spots to #93.

IDOL LIVE predix: Daughtry's 'Leave This Town'
Daughtry is no stranger to selling millions of albums. So will it really be a surprise to see the guys do well with the release of their sophomore album, Leave This Town, this week?
Of course not. In fact, an opening atop the Billboard 200 is all but assured, as the band's competition ranges from Yung Joc to Jessie James. The only question that remains is, how big will the album open at? Considering Daughtry's debut managed to sell 304k in its opening week back in November 2006, it would be a logical guess that this disc will do much, much better in its first week.
A good comparison could be the difference between Carrie Underwood's debut week sales for Some Hearts and Carnival Ride, which was 212k in the latter's favor (315k to 527k). One thing to considering, however, is the state of the economy at the moment, as well as the continuing decline of the CD. So do not go expecting the band to sell gold levels in its first week.
But the promotion has been top-notch, with Chris pulling in a lot of free publicity thanks to his recent acoustic cover of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" and other appearances he's made. The album's first single "No Surprise" is not doing the best job in terms of building anticipation, but with special promotional deals like the one the band has with ESPN to play some of their songs throughout the month, that should be be enough to cancel out the disappointing chart performance of the single.
After all consideration, a first week take of 390k seems to be in store, which would be among the highest releases of the year. Although this estimate is on the conservative side, it does seem fairly realistic in light of how sales have been lately.
'Idol' BB 200: Season 8 Walmart exclusive #34 (7/18/09)
For the first time in a very long time, an solo album by an Idol alum did not hold the title of top album representative for the franchise on the Billboard Top 200 chart for the chart week of July 18.
Instead, it was the Season 8 Walmart exclusive album that took on the title for the most recent chart, as it debuted at #34. Unfortunately, sales were not available for the entries for the second week in a row.
Next up was Kelly Clarkson and her fourth studio album All I Ever Wanted, which slid seven spots to #65. Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride followed at #74, down 15 spots from the previous week.
The other major country star to come out of Idol, Kellie Pickler, saw her self-titled sophomore release fall #76-78, while David Cook's self-titled album held steady at #87 for the second straight week.
Two weeks before seeing its sophomore effort released, Daughtry witnessed its debut album fall 14 spots to #105, as it still will not leave the chart. Look for it to increase over the course of the next two weeks thanks to Tuesday's launch of Leave This Town.
And in its second week of release, Michael Johns' post-Idol album Hold Back My Heart fell nearly 100 spots, collapsing #97-199. Expect it to disappear on next week's chart.

'Idol' BB 200: 'Carnival Ride' #55 (7/4/09)
It was just another summer week on the Billboard Top 200 chart for the chart week of July 4 for entries by Idol alums.
Once again, Carrie Underwood kicked things off with her current album Carnival Ride coming in at #55 for the week, down two spots from the previous week. The album sold 9.6k copies for the week, up 2% in sales and has now sold 2.905 million copies in all.
The original winner, Kelly Clarkson, was up next with her latest disc All I Ever Wanted, which declined 8% in sales and slid #56-62. The album has moved 621.4k in all including the additional 8.6k it generated this past week. Kellie Pickler's sophomore CD Kellie Pickler was up by 14% in sales and 11 spots to #69. It sold 7.8k for the week and 249.1k in all.
David Cook's self-titled effort followed at #74, down two spots and up 3% from the previous week and sold 7.6k in the period. Its total now sits at 1.184 million. Another Idol rocker, Daughtry, saw its freshman album shoot up 23% sales-wise 12 spots on the chart to #89. Its weekly take was 6.3k and its total is now 4.473 million.
A pair of compilation albums featuring Katharine McPhee were also found on the Billboard 200 for the week, as Chris Botti's Chris Botti Live In Boston fell #109-118 and David Foster's Hit Man re-entered the chart at #197. The albums sold 4.9k and 2.9k and now have totals of 112.3k and 206k, respectively.

'Idol' BB 200: 'Carnival Ride' #53 (6/27/09)
A depleted roster of albums by Idol alums was found on the Billboard Top 200 chart for the chart week of June 27, as a few older entries found themselves off the chart while the rest seemed to continue their slides.
For the first time in a long time, Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride led the pack with another 9.5k copies sold, falling #47-53 thanks to a 10% sales dip. Its total now stands at 2.895 million.
Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted was up next at #56, falling 11 spots from the previous week. Its weekly take of 9.4k was the result of a sales decrease of 11% and adds to its total for a current sum of 612.7k. Another winner, David Cook, followed with his self-titled album, which was also down in the count by 6% and off nine spots to #72. David Cook sold 7.4k copies, putting it at 1.177 million.
Kellie Pickler was in a league of her own, though, as she saw her self-titled album advance #81-80 and rise 3% in sales to 6.8k copies for a total of 241.3k. Look for an even bigger take thanks to her performance at the CMT Music Awards earlier this week. Although Daughtry's album slipped a scant 4% sales-wise and four spots chart-wise to #101, it still moved an additional 5.1k for a total of 4.467 million.
Another album that saw a sales gain this week was Chris Botti's Chris Botti In Boston, which was up #125-108 on the chart and 12% in sales, leading to a weekly take of 4.6k. It has sold 107.4k copies to date.
And Ruben Studdard rounded out the Billboard 200's Idol representation, as his latest effort Love Is was down a hefty 40 spots to #187 and 22% in sales to 2.9k copies, presenting him with only 26.6k copies to date. Look for the album to disappear on the chart next week.

HITS estimates: All 'Idol' albums fall out of Top 50
There was not a single Idol-related album to appear on HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart. This is the first time this year that an Idol alum has failed to chart in the Top 50 of this chart.
Earlier in the day, when the results were at 69.42%, Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride was at #33 with 7.5k, while Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted was at #48 with 4.8k copies sold.
Hopefully next week is a different story. But either way, final and complete figures courtesy of Billboard should be out by Thursday.

HITS estimates: Kelly 10.8k, Carrie 10.6k
It was an exclusive club on HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart, as two female winners were the only representatives of albums by Idol alums on the chart for the week.
Kelly Clarkson was up first with her album All I Ever Wanted, which fell a minor three spots to #43 with another 10.8k copies sold. It was down only 7% from its take the previous week. Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride was the only other Idol-related album to chart this week, as it decreased only 2% sales-wise and was down #43-45 in the rankings. Its weekly take was 10.6k.
Full numbers courtesy of Billboard should hopefully be out either tomorrow or Thursday, as the figures will include a much more extensive look at how alums' albums are faring in the lower rungs of the chart.

HITS estimates: Kelly 11.6k, Carrie 10.8k
There were slips and slides to be had all around by Idol alums HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart.
Kelly Clarkson kicked things off for HDD with her latest album All I Ever Wanted, which sold another 11.6k copies, down 9%, and fell two spots on the chart to #42.
Next up was Carrie Underwood, whose Carnival Ride dipped 12% in sales to 10.8k and was only down one spot to #44. And David Cook's self-titled post-Idol album took a sizable hit to #44, down from #26 the previous week, which was a 44% sales dip.
Exact figures will be available as soon as the Billboard 200 chart is made public, which should be later this week.

HITS estimates: Cook 18k; Ruben 14.7k
The Idol finale was kind to some and not to others when it came to HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart for the week, as a re-entry led the way among alums.
David Cook's self-titled effort saw a resurgence on the chart thanks to an emotional performance of "Permanent" on last Wednesday's Idol finale, sending the album back into the Top 50 at #26 with 18k copies sold.
Next up was the latest studio album from Season 2 champ Ruben Studdard, as his Love Is made its mark at #34 with 14.7k copies, which is the velvet teddy bear's lowest opening cume to date.
Two more winners followed Ruben, as Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted slid 26% to 12.7k copies and was done 22 spots to #42, while Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride saw a much smaller 1% slip to 12.2k copies, down #35-44.
Exact figures will be available as soon as the Billboard 200 chart is made public, which should be later this week.

'Idol' BB 200: 'All I Ever Wanted' #20 (5/30/09)
It was not a pretty week for Idol alums on the Billboard Top 200 chart for the chart week of May 30, as their albums took sizable hits for the most part after a few weeks of good gains.
Leading the way was Kelly Clarkson with her latest disc All I Ever Wanted, which slid three spots to #20 after suffering a 25% sales decrease to 17.5k. The album has sold 567.7k in all. Another popular female winner, Carrie Underwood, followed with Carnival Ride, which moved 12.6k copies and witnessed a steeper 34% decline. The album slipped #27-33 on the chart and now has a total of 2.852 million.
Next up was David Cook and his self-titled post-Idol CD, which also was down 34% in sales to 7.9k. Its total stands at 1.134 million and it receded 14 spots to #61 for the week. Following Cook, the other Idol-related rock act, Daughtry, saw its album slide 38% in sales to 7.2k copies, which explains its 16-spot slide to #66.
Last week's debut by an alum, Elliott Yamin's Fight For Love, tumbled 67% to 6.5k for the week, and falling 48 rankings to #74. It has sold 26.5k after two weeks. Chris Botti's live album Chris Botti In Boston sold another 5.2k copies, slipping 42% and #62-89 on the chart. Its total now sits at 90.1k.
Jennifer Hudson's Jennifer Hudson followed at #96, down 10 spots from the previous week, and sold 4.9k copies for the week while decreasing sales-wise by 26% and adding up to a 731.2k. Kellie Pickler's sophomore album actually rose a spot to #106 in the face of a 12% sales dip to 4.7k and now stands at 216k copies.
And David Archuleta finished things off with his self-titled album at #161, down from #119, and sold another 3.2k copies for a total of 702.1k. It was down 37% from the previous week.

HITS estimates: Kelly 17.1k, Carrie 12.4k
The post-Mothers' Day sales week was not very kind to artists as a whole, with only one album in HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart seeing an increase. Naturally, the same held true for albums by Idol alums, witch downward chart movements to be had all around.
Holding down the fort was Kelly Clarkson, whose All I Ever Wanted dipped 29% to 17.1k, marking a four-spot drop to #19. Carrie Underwood was the only other alum to be represented in the estimates, as her Carnival Ride moved another 12.4k, down 36% sales-wise, and slid #27-35 on the chart side of things.

HITS estimates: Kelly 24k, Elliott 20.2k
The Mothers' Day effect was in fill swing last week as evidenced by big gains in sales all around for Idol-related albums according to HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart.
Kelly Clarkson once again led things off with All I Ever Wanted, which jumped nine spots to #15 thanks to a 29% uptick in sales to 24k copies. Elliott Yamin, whose sophomore release Fight For Love debuted at #25, was only able to move 20.2k in its first week, which was a whole 25k off my optimistic 45k prediction. Hopefully its total will grow when the actuals come in from Billboard.
Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride was also up for the week, 23% to be exact, as it rose #30-27 and moved another 19.3k units. Both David Cook and Daughtry re-emerged into the Top 50, with the former's self-titled album netting 12.5k and landing at #44 and the latter's debut release taking in 12k right behind at #45.

'Idol' BB 200: 'All I Ever Wanted' #25 (5/16/09)
After a few days delay, we finally have sales figures for Idol-related entries on the Billboard Top 200 chart for the chart week of May 16.
Once again leading the pack was Kelly Clarkson with her All I Ever Wanted, which slid four spots to #25 despite holding steady at 18.3k copies for the second week in a row. It has now sold 526.9k in all. Following Kelly was Carrie Underwood with Carnival Ride, which dipped 5% in sales and moved another 15.6k copies for the week, bringing its total to 2.820 million. It was down three spots to #29 on the chart side.
David Cook's David Cook came in third for Idol-related entries at #62, down from #55 the previous week thanks to a scant 4% sales drop. It sold 7.7k and has a current total of 1.114 million copies.
Chris Botti's live album Chris Botti In Boston was next with 6.7k copies, down 14% from the previous week, and fell #60-71. Its total is now 75.9k. Jennifer Hudson's self-titled debut came in at #85, down 15 spots from the previous week, with 5.6k copies sold, which was a sales decrease of 20%. It has now sold 719.6k.
Further down the rungs of the Billboard 200's ladder, Kellie Pickler saw her sophomore album gain 19% sales-wise and advance 22 spots to #111 thanks to another 4.6k copies sold, placing its total at 206.1k. And then David Archuleta's self-titled album fell #110-121 with 4.1k copies moved for the week, which was down 10% in sales from the previous week. The album's total now stands at 693.9k.
Mandisa's sophomore album Freedom followed at #130, up drastically from #178 the week prior with a 28% improvement in sales, to 3.8k copies for the week, placing its Billboard total at 12.5k. Daughtry's Daughtry was off 7% and 13 spots to #177 with 2.8k units sold for a grand total of 4.425 million.
And Taylor Hicks' latest effort brought up the rear at #180 as it saw a 148% resurgence in sales thanks to a performance on the Top 5 results show, with 2.8 copies sold for a total of 27.2k.
