HITS estimates: 'Play On' #9 w/ 85.5k

A new Idol-related entry in the form of an album was not enough to dethrone another album from a veteran alum according to HITS Daily Double's Top 50 building album sales chart.

Carrie Underwood retained her spot as the top charting alum thanks to her third studio album Play On falling just 32% in its third week to 85.5k copies. It was down six spots on the chart side to #9.

The only other alum to see an album make the chart was Kris Allen, whose self-titled debut album debuted at #10 with 84.9k copies. If this figure and position hold when the official numbers come in, it will be the lowest sales numbers for an Idol winner to date. As for my prediction of 90k for the album's debut week sales, it is pretty much on target.

Full sales numbers and chart positions courtesy of Billboard should be out by the end of this Thanksgiving week.
