Flashback: Katharine McPhee's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"

Katharine McPhee was known not only as Idol's fifth season's female vocal powerhouse-in-chief, but she also made strong statements through her performance style. One of her most memorable performances came during Top 5 week, when she performed KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" on Birth Year/Current Billboard Chart theme night. Watch the performance below:

It's quite clear that Katharine's decision to perform the song on her knees had something to do with why to this day it is one of the most unique displays on the Idol stage. The fact that she got so much praise for this choice led Kat to reprise the song during the finale, which lacked the magic the first performance had. This was just another example of the importance of leaving well enough alone, which has been a recurring them throughout the show's history. Still, it is one of the most memorable performance ever delivered.

Flashback: Tamyra Gray's "A House Is Not a Home"

Tamyra Gray was the favorite to take the crown running up to the close of Idol's first season, but her premature ouster will remain one of the biggest disappointments in the show's entire history. Despite giving memorable showings on a weekly basis over the course of the Summer of 2002, they weren't enough to propel her to the win. One of her most spectacular performances happened during Top 5 week when she sang Luther Vandross' "A House Is Not a Home" on Burt Bacharach night. Watch it below:

Since this performance, Simon Cowell has seen many, many performances on TV, and so even though he has most likely seen superior performances to this one, he probably would still agree this is "on-par with Whitney and Christina."

Poll of the week: Lee DeWyze favorite Top 5 contestant

There were no big discrepancies in the results for the Top 5 edition of IDOL LIVE"s poll of the week.

Lee DeWyze led the way with 34 votes (32%), which was nothing out of the ordinary and considering the good praise he's been generating of late, this should be expected. It was perhaps a little bit more surprising that both Crystal Bowersox and Casey James finished in second with 25% of the total votes cast (27 votes a piece).

Tonight's eliminee, Aaron Kelly, managed 14 votes (13%), and Big Mike was able to net four votes (3%), which isn't bad considering where he usually places.

IDOL LIVE Blog - Top 5 Results (5/5/10)

Before the night is through, we will have our final four contestants of Idol's ninth season. Can't you feel the excitement? Regardless of what you thought of last night's performances, it shouldn't be taken for granted that they were at least given a knowledgeable mentor to help guide them through Frank Sinatra's catalog of songs in the form of Harry Connick Jr. (I'm talking to you, Miley Cyrus).

In terms of guest performers, other than HCJ we get to look forward to a high profile, over the top showing by none other than Lady Gaga. She will perform her new single "Alejandro."

To see who I predict will be leaving tonight, see here. And as usual, please feel free to add your two cents throughout the one-hour blogcast. Coverage starts just prior to 9 p.m. ET.

Tonight's blogcast features the music of Kady Malloy, Kelly Clarkson, Melinda Doolittle, Michael Johns and Ruben Studdard.

IDOL LIVE predix: Top 5 Results

Alright, so last night was abysmal. There's no way of getting around it: Frank Sinatra would be embarrassed. As good of a mentor as Harry Connick Jr. was, and as much effort as he put into their arrangements, there was only one above average performance. To add to it, hardly anyone looked comfortable up there with a big huge swing band and barely any space to move around.

Plus, the banishment of all musical instruments (especially the guitar) all but stripped the finalists' of their comfort and confidence. Basically, if there was any less current of a theme that the producers could have picked for them, it would have made things only a little worse.

With that said, read my predictions for how tonight will go below:

Bottom 2
Aaron, Mike

Eliminated
Mike

So, after last week's prediction debacle, it only makes sense to pick the best performer of last night and think he or she is being sent packing due to his or her fans feeling complacent. That means Michael "Big Mike" Lynche is best suited to fit this bill. In all honesty, Mike's fans are not feeling as vulnerable as Casey's fans, who witnessed their favorite get absolutely pummeled by the judges last night.

Lee received the most praise, plus he went last, plus he's never been in the bottom three, so he's a good bet to be safe tonight. Crystal is, well Crystal, and Aaron seems to have the youth vote wrapped around his finger for the time being. So once again, Mike seems to be without a buffer to save him from elimination tonight, even though based solely on vocals he should be spared.

As for who will accompany him in the bottom two (there most likely won't be a bottom three if they follow the pattern set by previous seasons), Aaron is a usual bottom dweller, and his fans weren't as motivated as those of fellow usual lower end buddy Casey, so he will most likely round out the pair. If for some reason there is a B3, we can expect Casey will be there representing.

In my original predictions I had Didi finishing 5th, so that's obviously not happning.

Since the Top 24 I have correctly predicted 6-19 eliminations and since the Top 12 I have correctly predicted 2-7 eliminations.

IDOL LIVE Blog - Top 5 Perform (5/4/10)

Last week's results were a letdown, so the Top 5 finalists really must dig deep to deliver stunners. Because let's face it, anything less at this point would be a disappointment of major proportions. Hopefully Harry Connick, Jr. is able to bring out the inner rat pack member of the finalists when they take on the song catalog of Frank Sinatra.

As always, please feel free to add your two cents throughout the one-hour blogcast, with coverage starting just prior to 8 p.m. ET.

Tonight's blogcast features the music of Brooke White, Chris Daughtry, David Archuleta, Elliott Yamin and Lil Rounds.

Flashback: Paris Bennett's "Kiss"

It's hard to believe how much stronger the Top 5 of Idol's fifth season is compared to the five remaining competitors we have now, but just watch Paris Bennett's performance of Prince's "Kiss" in the Top 5 round, one of two songs she performed that night, below:

Paris selected the song in the theme of contestants' birth year, while the other song she performed that night (Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You") was for the current Billboard chart theme. Although Paris was able to show off her bubbly personality, but unfortunately she couldn't withstand the popularity of her four peers. Still, it's amazing to look back at the stark differences between what he had then and what we're left with now.

Flashback: Fantasia's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life"

Fantasia gave some lively performances on Idol's third season, but she sounded best when she took on slow ballads. On Top 5 night, Fantasia sang "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" by Barbara Streisand for the Big Band theme. Watch the performance below:

Although it was not nearly as magical as her "Summertime" performance, Fantasia was able to connect with the audience on a personal level, especially because she dedicated the song to her daughter.

Poll of the week: Adam's "feeling good" about the results

In IDOL LIVE's most recent edition of the poll of the week, it was another week of being on top for Adam. This extends his lead as the first-place finalist in the poll of the week series.

Kris once again came up short, but this week it was not even all that close. Kris brought in 36 votes (23%), way behind Adam. Danny was next with 20 votes (13%), with Allison (12 votes, 7%) and Matt (5 votes, 3%) brought up the rear.

In this week's poll of the week, readers are once again asked to vote for their Top 4 favorite finalist. You will have exactly one week to vote.

Kris Allen 36 (23%)
Matt Giraud 5 (3%)
Danny Gokey 20 (13%)
Allison Iraheta 12 (7%)

Analysis: Producers are trigger happy for drama

The end result of tonight's Top 5 results show was anything but unexpected. The means we took to get to the result, however, are another matter. But if anyone is surprised that Adam landed in the "Bottom 2," let's just take a look at the factors in play here.

First, Adam has never been in the Bottom 3, nevermind the B2. Therefore, the chances that he could skate into the finale without ever being in the latter were very slim. So what do the producers do? They psych out all of Adam's fans, who have become complacent over the past few weeks. I mean, it's hard to argue with such high numbers on DialIdol, isn't it? But there will come a day when a power hungry Kris Allen or Allison Iraheta fanbase votes and texts its way to a victory in that scenario.

Even though there were only five finalists remaining when votes were cast last night, which supported the notion that anyone could end up in any order when the results came in, there was zero chance that Adam was actually in the B2 following a highly praised performance in the pimp spot. The assertion that his polarization could be a reason to alienate a lot of the audience remains true, but again, that would not be enough to warrant a trip to the B2 on its own. There are still just as many supporters as there are those who do not vote for him.

But stepping back from the results for a moment, Adam made one of the most boneheaded moves when he picked Allison's and Danny's group based on who "did the best last night," which meant he assumed he was among the best performers of the night. Now, he really cannot be faulted for this because, well, everyone else thought he was among the best and that he would be in the top vote-getting group when Ryan began splitting the five of them up. Still, he should have taken a page from the rest of the finalists from seasons past that refused to pick a group and/or just sat/stood in the middle of the stage in protest.

Once people can come down from being hit by the blow to the face of Adam being in the B2, it's really no surprise that Matt left in fifth. As even he mentioned to Ryan following the revelation of the results, he was like a cat with nine lives on the show and is appreciative of how far he made it. Matt is right: he got a ton of chances to extend his time on the show and it was just his time to leave this week. Matt even sounded better on his encore than he did last night, and could have a career as an R&B singer if he chooses to pursue that route.

As for the rest of the results, it was no shock that Danny and Allison landed in the top spots based on last night, with Simon's ridiculous underwhelming critique of Allison's stellar vocal showing sending fans into a frenzy, undoubtedly accounting for a large chunk of the 47 million votes cast last night. And Kris was not up to anything new, as he ended up in the middle of the pack once again. Dark horse? Perhaps.

Moving on from the results, the producers had to reach for three guest performers tonight to act as filler, and could not have picked an odder combination. First up was Natalie Cole, who looked classy and sounded as crisp as ever on her song. Then came Taylor Hicks and his "Seven Mile Breakdown," which injected some life into the show but felt kind of out of place amid the backdrop of Rat Pack era week. He seemed to really appreciate being asked to return and perform, though, and reiterated that he loved being back on the Idol stage. All in all, it was not an amazing vocal performance but it was more on the exciting side than what we could have had in his place.

And then there was this week's mentor, Jamie Foxx. As if Foxx was not out of place after last night's critiques, he was even more out of place tonight when he autotuned the life out of his "#1 single" (according to Ryan. Is that song really #1 in the country?!) "Blame It." He did more twirling than even pretending to lip-synch, as he forgot to hold the mic up to his mouth more than a few times. And then for him to say the Top 5 finalists were the most talented singers he had heard in the past few years? After that performance, Jamie, that is more of a diss than it is a compliment. And didn't he recently say something on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to the effect of "just remember one thing: everything I say, I don't mean any of it." Right, we'll take you up on that.

Moving on, the Ford music video was dumber than usual this week, as the scenery was painted in color after beginning with a boring and lifeless grey scale landscape. The behind the scenes footage of seeing the finalists "baking a cake," however, was definitely worth every penny. We got to see Danny and Allison throw cake in each others' faces! We saw Kris, Adam and Matt breaking plates and strangling each other in cake batter and flour. How is that not entertaining?

There was really nothing else exciting about this results show, though. The group performance was good even though there was no lip-synching, and then Simon actually acted humble knowing that his critiques were less spot-on than Kara's and Randy's (keyword: acting).

My original predictions did not do all that well this week, as Allison was my first pick to leave in fifth place when I put in my predictions all those weeks ago. My pre-show predictions, however, were much more on the right track, as I had Matt going home with Kris in the B2 and Allison as the third member of the B3. Obviously the latter two guesses were wrong, but I had Matt going home and that's all that matters. Right?

One thing's for sure, though: next week's showcase of rock songs will be a sight to see.

IDOL LIVE predix: Top 5 Results

Nothing will come as a shock tonight when a finalist that should have exited the competition two weeks ago finally goes home in fifth place. Even though the producers (and Ryan) will try to hype up the notion that anyone that goes tonight will come as a "shock," there will be no such thing.

The predictability factor will be out in force for tonight's results:

Bottom 3
Allison, Kris, Matt

Bottom 2
Kris, Matt

Eliminated
Matt

Matt really has done the best job possible all things considering, and he was able to deliver a very strong performance last night in a week that was really his to shine during. That said, he has gone as far as possible considering the major competition he has been paired with, and will gracefully bow out with a reprise of "My Funny Valentine."

Things that are working against Matt are the finite possibilities of who can go home at this point, the fact that he chose a song that was basically already perfected by two finalists on this show (Melinda Doolittle in Season 6 and Constantine Maroulis in Season 4) and most importantly Simon's shenanigans with his good old reverse psychology.

As for the finalists that will receive a wake up call tonight, Kris will certainly be one, joining Matt in the Bottom 2. If there is a Bottom 3 formulated from this crop of five, it would have to be Allison that fulfills the spot, but Ryan will most likely skip ahead to the B2 in order to create a sense of suspense.

In my original predictions, I had Allison leaving tonight, but even though that technically could still happen, I really do think Matt's time has come to a close for the final time. But of course, there is only one way to find out whether or not this commonly held prediction comes true tonight.

IDOL LIVE Blog: Top 5 Perform (4/28/09)

Join us tonight as we blog during the Top 5 finalists' performances, when four guys and a girl take on songs from the Rat Pack era. The question is, which contestant will play which role? Our bet is as follows: Adam = James Dean, Allison = Joey Bishop, Danny = Sammy Davis, Jr., Kris = Frank Sinatra and Matt = Peter Lawford. Alright, so maybe that's a stretch, but it's the best we've got. As usual, the blogcast will begin at 8 p.m. ET and will last one hour with Jamie Foxx serving as the contestants' mentor.

Tonight's blogcast will feature music from Kevin Covais, Bucky Covington, Diana DeGarmo, Katharine McPhee and Jordin Sparks.

Tonight: one song only and another Foxx

Idol has gone back on its word. Instead of having the Top 5 perform two songs each, as previously advertised on AmericanIdol.com, we will only get to hear one song from each from the era of the Rat Pack.

Also, as announced this morning by Paula on the Tommy and Brook Show Jamie Foxx will be mentoring the finalists tonight. Foxx, who is starring in that flop movie about a homeless musician, recently had to apologize for making disparaging comments about Miley Cyrus.

Perfect choice for a mentor, producers! Because when I think of Rat Pack music, Jamie Foxx is the first "artist" that comes to mind...

P.S. since Natalie Cole is performing tomorrow night, why couldn't they judt have switched her role with Foxx's? It's not like anyone wants to hear that "Blame It" song more than they have to, but it would at least be beneficial to the contestants in that Cole's expertise and advice would be much more meaningful.

Brooke's exit is unpredictably predictable

After all the controversy Idol has seen this week, it is a little surprising that Brooke White, who many had predicted would be in danger, was eliminated last night.

The 24-year-old native of Mesa, Ariz., wiped away a stream of tears after learning her fate, and managed to pull herself together to thank her fans. As she tearfully struggled through a final performance of "I Am...I Said," the Top 4 finalists surrounded her and comforted her, which was a really touching scene.

The reason why her ouster was unpredictably predictable: it would have made more sense to have a "shocker" happen to help America forget about Paula's loopyiness the night before, but it seems we have already put that behind us anyway regardless. But looking back, it also would have looked bad had Jason Castro been ousted, and his fans would have called foul, blaming Paula's gaffe for his elimination (and rightfully so).

Syesha Mercado, who was also in the bottom 2 last night, should not have been there, and she has now broken Season 1's Nikki McKibbin's record for being in the bottom 2/3 the most times in a season. Hopefully she can keep her streak alive without falling out next week.

As for what many are now referring to as "Paulagate," Ryan Seacrest was vague in his brief statement on the controversy, when he said the rumors he had bene reading about her online were "not true" and that they are "family and we love her." Simon gave Paula a hug, he sat at the judges' table misty eyed. It is very odd that Ryan did not offer an excuse on Paula's behalf, as she had done so earlier in the day on his KISS-FM radio show. That decision to let the gaffe go unexplained, even if they were to give a classic BS excuse, should raise some red flags. If it was a simple misunderstanding, come out and say so.

The highlight of last night was by far and away Natasha Bedingfield's interaction with David Archuleta, as he has a crush on her and Ryan asked her out to the prom for him. Natasha said she had a dress and a boyfriend, which she must not understand is a classic example of giving mixed signals. She was cute when she sat over on the couches with the finalists and sat next to David, hugging him. She even sneaked a kiss on his cheek, most likely enraging 90% of the U.S. under 14 female population.

That situation aside, the rest of the show was a total bore. Maybe a surprise call from Simon's first kiss, a 46-year-old woman named Tara Miller, was a nice touch, but it went on for too long and Paula's well-intentioned but Debbie Downer-like comment on whether Tara had "cured the rabies" yet was in poor taste.

The Neil Diamond medley and Neil Diamond's performance were both lackluster, Diamond's performance in particular was really disconnected from the audience. He seemed a little bit aloof but friendly.

Next week, the Top 4 take on songs from the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, which most definitely will not favor a particular contestant *cough*DC*cough*. Hopefully it lives up to its theme, unlike this week.

Analysis: Paula's seeing the future, baby!

In the moment of confusion seen 'round the world, whether it was on live television, audio stream or via IDOL LIVE, Paula Abdul suffered an embarrassment that will surpass her "fortune cookie" comment in Season 5 and her infected finger episode in Season 3.

Although it is true that Idol fans love Paula for her wackiness and would not want to see her replaced as much as they may complain about her, many are now questioning the legitimacy of this show. Yes, there have been many questions raised in the past about whether the show is rigged or not, but this time the media will be less than kind to Paula and the show's producers.

To start off, the whole layout of the show was a disaster and rushed, so that right there opened the door to a chance of a screw up. From backstage accounts by EW.com, it seemed the "firing squad comments" at the end of round one were either poorly planned, or not planned at all, so that added a hurdle for the judges, specifically Paula. Now, to start off her comments she said "Oh gosh, we've never had to write these things down...fast enough," which gives off the perception that she had written down the comments during the first five performances. But how is that possible when she was up dancing during a few of the performances? Besides, she had already written something for Jason Castro's second song, so that excuse does not stick.

Over the course of the show's seven-year history, there have been many tidbits released about the extent to which the judges participate in the dress rehearsals, and Simon was famously quoted as saying he "doesn't listen during the live performances" because he formulates his opinion during the dress rehearsals. But Paula is known for showing up late, sometimes only minutes before the live show begins. So unless she sat through the entire dress rehearsal last night, that excuse has a tough time standing up as well.

This leaves another option open: did Paula make write her comments before seeing even the dress rehearsal? Was she handed her note cards by Nigel or another production member? Or was it just an honest mistake?

Personally, I don't think it is a conspiracy. Sure, the show has seen its fair share of controversy and mess ups, but this instance was probably just Paula getting frazzled and confused at the change of schedule and she wanted to make sure she had something to say so that the five performances did not go by as a blur (as they did for most viewers). Her nerves got in the way and she tripped up, but I don't think it has anything to do with what is in her Coke cup. Still, the slip up was a huge one, and Ryan and Paula will try to explain away what happened with some elaborate story. If Simon's "eye roll" at Chris Richardson had to be apologized for last season, there is no way they can afford to ignore this.

And the fact that Jason had to go out there and perform a song he already knew he would be getting negative comments for was a little on the unfair side. He definitely did a number on his confidence, because his first performance was much better than his second.

But I think the real story here is how Paula tried to cover up her gaffe by saying her comments were for David Cook, and then saying he was "amazing." This was out of desperation after she knew what she had done, and was not thinking of what the media et al would say about her lame cover up the next day. It is understandable, but still unprofessional. She should have apologized to Jason, saying she had written down comments from the dress rehearsal and it would have been less awkward.

Again, it is up to Nigel as to what kind of approach Idol takes tonight in addressing last night's events, and hopefully he does the right thing. The show cannot afford any more of these situations if it wants to sustain its waning spot on top.

Frantic finalists stumble on Neil Diamond night

The mess that was ultimately Neil Diamond night left viewers wondering how Nigel Lythgoe approved such a disorganized display. The performances, although not bad, were hindered by their short durations, and the whole flow was missing. There was no excitement until Paula's blunder of epic proportions (but that will be addressed in the following post).

To kick off the night, Jason Castro performed "Forever In Blue Jeans" to a less-than-responsive audience. His second song, "September Morn," was the worst quality performance last night vocals wise, and was boring with a capital B.

The judges' rapid-fire critiques at the end of round one were a very bad idea to put it nicely, and Randy's empty description of Jason being "ok" on "Jeans" did nothing to help his cause. For "September," he basically adding a sentence worth of the same words, calling it an "ok whatever" performance. Thanks Randy! Paula...well, we'll just skip her first round comments, but she thought Jason took the same liberty on both of his performances. And Simon's merciless yet incredible slash and burn style of comments pegged Jason as "forgettable," following up with saying the judges "don't recognize [him]" and he did nothing to change the arrangements.

David Cook proceeded to sing "I'm Alive" and "All I Really Ever Need Is You," two lesser-known Diamond songs, yet he was able to rock them out and make them sound current, as Simon noted. He called his second performance "brilliant," after earlier declaring "Alive" to be "just above average." Randy liked both, saying he was "in the zone" (for the first of three times last night) on his first song, and telling David he is a "huge David Cook fan" last night because he "rocked the house." Paula said she felt like she was "looking at the next American Idol."

Some lighter fare was brought forth by Brooke White, who tired her hand at The Monkees' classic "I'm a Believer," which was very erratic and her vocals were not all there. But her second performance of "I Am...I Said" was beautiful, and the fact that she heeded Neil Diamond's advice by substituting "Arizona" for "New York" in the song to connect more with the audience was very wise. Randy thought "Believer" was better than last week, and she was vulnerable on "Said." Paula said she had fun on her fist song and was vulnerable on her second. And Simon boldly called her first performance "a nightmare," to which Brooke shook her head and the audience booed loudly. But he thought her second was "a million times better" than her first.

And then the resident teen singing sensation David Archuleta tackled "Sweet Caroline," which would have been better had he ad-libbed a few lines ("oh! oh! oh!" and "so good! so good! so good!"), but this Red Sox fan will settle for what he was able to deliver. He also did "America," which he thankfully did not morph into a ballad and cracked a tiny bit on a high note, but it was not too bad. Simon thought the first song was "amateurish" but thought "America" was a "clever" song choice, saying he ticked all the boxes (whatever that means). Randy loved both, which was a big surprise of course. And then Paula thought his voice was "on point."

Syesha Mercado closed the show, after first singing "Hello Again" to much praise, with the exception of Simon's "old-fashioned" comment. She looked beautiful last night and was able to show a lot of personality on "Thank the Lord for the Night Time," which was not as strong as "Hello" but was still a fun way to end the night. Randy said she was "in the zone" not once, but twice over the course of the night, and that he liked her doing the theatrical kinds of performances. Paula compared her to Corrine Bailey Ray, and Simon used his signature reverse psychology to trick voters into voting for her by declaring he thought she would be in trouble this week, which her fans will surely appreciate.

Simon closed out the night by saying it was "officially the strangest show we've ever done," which is the complete truth. Even neglecting the Paula episode, the night was rushed, chaotic and was only fun to watch in a train wreck sort of way. It will surely go down in American Idol history as one of the wackiest moments the show has ever seen.

As for predictions, it looks like Jason is a goner, but not only that, David A. will make his first appearance in the bottom two. Why is this? Well, there are many reasons, but a good one will be Nigel & Co. trying to get America to forget about Paula's gaffe because of the utter shock everyone will be in from seeing TCO standing there on the brink of elimination. Syesha is as safe as a Swiss bank account and David C. has nothing to worry about. Brooke, although she probably received the second-lowest amount of votes, will be spared due to her embarrassment last week. So in a way, this will work out for everyone because a) David A.'s fans will get a wakeup call, b) America's short term memory will discard Paula's antics to make room for David A.'s shocker and c) Nigel will see a ratings surge from the controversy. I will be a little disappointed if things don't go this way tonight, but as Neil Diamond week proved, nothing is certain on this show.
