RCA pulling out all the stops for "Light On"

It would appear that the RCA Records of old has died and returned as a Jive Records clone, or at least a less-experienced, more clumsy version of the fellow Sony BMG label. RCA, which has been responsible for three Justin Guarini's for every Kelly Clarkson, is determined to have David Cook succeed, and so it is stopping at nothing to get his lead single, "Light On," good press.

Starting two days ago, the front page ad for Nickelback's new single "Gotta Be Somebody" was inexplicably replaced with an ad for "Light On," which comes in addition to a large banner ad and a thumbnail ad on the Pop section's main page. Also on the iTunes front, a mass e-mail was sent out yesterday to all purchasers of Cook's "The Time of My Life" single as a recommendation to purchase "Light On" among other things. And the label's final iTunes tactic comes in the form of a blog post on Cook's official site giving explicit instructions on how to gift the track to other users in order to increase sales.

Similarly on Amazon.com, an e-mail was sent out to the retailer's customers that have purchased downloads on its mp3 store by other Idol alums like Jordin Sparks and Daughtry encouraging them to buy "Light On."

Now, there is nothing wrong with a label trying to promote its artists and their material, especially during its first week of release. But RCA's actions are very inconsistent with what they have been known to do in the past. It is not even a disappointment considering "Light On" is currently #4 on the Top 100 overall songs chart on iTunes considering the amount of competition that was released on the same day. But for some reason, RCA is coming off a bit desperate at this point and there is no real valid reason for it.

Regardless of how many downloads "Light On" sells this week, the single should still have a good shot at longevity considering it has yet to even be sent to radio. It is just interesting to see this new side of RCA. Where was it for Diana DeGarmo, Bo Bice and Katharine McPhee?

Thank you for sharing that information. Very interesting. It sounds like it's not doing so well. But, now that they are pumping it , it seems like desperation. Where do they have the money for that? I wonder , even though Jive and RCA are the same company, if there is competition there between the two?

It is pathetic for any artist to give instructions on how to multiple buy their songs by gifting. If his music touches people, they will be motivated to purchase on their own.

It looks like a desperate attempt to inflate sales.

Anonymous said...

If you actually read the blog post, it sounds like users asked for assistance from the IT guys on how to do gifting, who responded. The blog post doesn't actually say one way or the other if they think that gifting is a good idea.

I regularly get emails from Amazon recommending purchases that seem (to Amazon) to be consistent with other purchases that I have made, so that doesn't strike me as meaning anything.

Haha. They are probably freaking out because looks really bad when the runner up does so much better than the winner, has has already happened. Archuleta's first single was #1 on itunes for a while and debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. I don't see Cook doing that well with "Light On".

Anonymous said...

Wow, it does seem desperate for an artist to give fans instructions on how to gift his music...I mean it is not enough to buy one copy of the song. You better buy multiple copies for all your friends so I can look good in my debut.

Also sending out spamming emails to people, begging them to check your music out. If your music is good they should sell. If not, spamming emails are not gonna do it.

I know Crush shoot to top of itunes quickly and stayed there for 1 week easily. Why was Cook struggling so much? He is at 7 now. If after all the desperation light on still not outselling Crush, lol

Cook's doing very well with "Light On"..
There's no need to campare cook's chart and archuleta's chart unless they release the song at the same week because the level competition of every week is definitely.
Clearly, Jive choose the "slow" week for Arculeta's Crush coz they know that's the only chance Crush will hit the top..
RCA put Cook's Light On on very "peak" week because they believe Light On could compete with "The Shark" (TI, Christina, Nickelback, Pink, etc..) and it is..
Light On hit #3 on I-Tunes even though later slipped to #7, but it rose again to #6.. That's good.. Surely Crush wouldn't even made to the top 10 if it released this week..

Crush shoot to top of itunes quickly and JUST stayed there for 1 week before later out of top 10 EASILY. I beliveve Light On will do better that that..
About the gift instructions, I can tell archuleta's fan also doing the same.. And there's nothing wrong by giving a little technical instructions fo the one need them..

Unknown said...

light on is down to 8 now. oh boy

Anonymous said...

Time for more emails! Or if they're really desperate, they could pay to have TI's ad replaced with an ad for Light On. Wouldn't surprise me.

In other news, Crush is up to 14 now. Apparently it doesn't have longevity though...

How long did Light On stay at #3? Oh that's right, a half day? Impressive lol. Crush is still hanging around right outside the Top 10 a whole 6 weeks after its release.

It easily fell out of the top 10? I don't think so. In case you didn't know, Crush actually re-entered the Top 10 just last week. And hung around there until the new releases came out this week. In fact, it would STILL be in the Top 10 if it wasn't for the new releases this week.

Archuleta's fans, FANS being the key word. His official website sure doesn't have gifting instructions on the front page. They're not that desperate.

Quick! Who else RCA can send an email to? Check out Light On!!!!

Anonymous said...

This guy has had 11 songs in the billboard hot 100, as well as the longest charting coronation single. Something tells me they're not worried about David Archuleta's single.

From what I've seen, Cook seems to be doing very well. Had RCA truly wanted to market him this week, they would have promoted him more on radio and sent out e-mails to Cook's 122,000 myspace friends. I think everything done so far was deliberate and planned in advance. The majority of current hits do not debut in the top ten (Pink's single is the perfect example), so I'm just not seeing the issue here.

As for the Amazon adds...aren't they sent by Amazon? I get at least one a week. I think you are reading too much into this.

The gifting thread was started by international fans who wanted to get "Light On" and not from fans trying to boost sales. People responding to those requests did not know how to gift so they asked the "Webnerds" to post instructions. This is Cook's fansite not his Myspace. Big difference.

The problem with the writer on this blog is that he/she took all of these "facts" from the comments on MJs thread yesterday. This reads like a set of one-sided minutes from that discussion.

Just to clear a few things up, the information in this post was not harvested from any other blog. I personally received the e-mail from iTunes, noticed the change in ads on iTunes myself, saw the post on Cook's official site about gifting and read of the Amazon e-mail on a message board.

It is true that Amazon sends out its e-mails for recommendation purposes but only if there is monetary incentive (i.e. the record label pays Amazon) to send out the e-mail. Hope that cleared a few things up.

IDOL LIVE don't worry. We were talking about this yesterday at Pulse too.

Dan...they were also discussing this on Pulse??? Sometimes I think that Archuleta fans spend more time discussing Cook than they do Archie. The competition is over. Both Davids are very fond of each other and are competing in different genres. Fans of other idols need to move on.

Archies fans had it all over their sites about gifting crush also. Considering Light On isnt even playing on the radio yet, it's doing extremely well. All the other songs in the top 10 on itunes are on the radio. The impact date for Light On isnt even till oct 14. This is just another blog to stir up trouble and keep the competion going between the two davids. Im sure Light On will be a hit. David A and David C only with the best for each other, why cant everybody else just wish the best for them also?

Also when archies single went to number 1 on itunes, it fell down too...untill it started getting airplay then it came back up..so please you guys stop with the misinformation

IDOL LIVE: I pre-ordered David Cook's album and DID NOT receive any e-mails recommending Light On. I frequently get recommendations for books or movies I've bought and they're generated by AMAZON.

To all the immature Archie fans, grow up. David Cook won but they're both talented. Get over it already! Does it really make you feel better to post all this negative stuff about DC?? I prefer Cook but you don't see me posting negative things about Archie on various blogs!

Wow! lots of haters in this thread. I could give a shit about the Davids but come on people, labels are supposed to promote their artists. If they weren't pushing the song I bet you'd be saying that Cook's label has "given up" on him.

If you are Archie fans, then this is just plain sad. Maybe if you spent all this energy voting for him instead of hating on the other guy, he would've won?

Yep, Cook won by 12 million votes! Ya haters! How could Cook not do well in sales! Look at Taylor, winners are always winners lol

A certain segmwnt of the Cook fanbase deserves all the spotlight, scorn and derision they are getting. They have been great at dishing it out, but when the shoes is on the other foot, they can't take it. I've never dealt with such a hypocritical, smug and almost pathologically paranoid group of people in my life. They are pathologically obsessed with going to ANY length to ensure David Archuleta does not show up "their boy" in any way - their biggest fear this week is worrying about headlines that MAY be published in the media next week saying Archie Crushes Cook"..this sick obsession drives a lot of the rude, arrogant, underhanded and obnoxious behavior they exhibit to anyone who dares challenge their Idol in any way.. gifting was done by the Archies with Crush, and these same people were first in line to deride, bash and ridicule them for being "desperate"... such hypocrisy needed to be exposed, and I applaud you having the courage to go there...

I received an email from itunes saying I had purchased a David Cook song in the past and might be interested in LO.

However i have never done so. So it appears that RCA has gotten a hold of the email address of consumers who purchased songs from other Idol contestants and is currently spamming them.

Anonymous said...

If what the last poster relayed is true, what a steaming pile of crap engaged in by Amazon and RCA - implicitly or explicitly - to gin up sales for this song... wasn't the premise for gifting posed by the Cook fanbase to get it in the hands of those fans who live outside the US, and would be unable to make a purchase legally, or to get it in the hands of teens and others unable to afford it, or buy it under their own aegis? What transpired with this poster blows that premise all to hell... this whole situation is beginning to reek... Can't RCA afford to market this song in a more professional manner, one that would at baseline level meet the criterion established by the fan base to gift in the first place? Idiots.....

Anonymous said...

In response to the last poster it is 100% true. I received the email from itunes on Friday.

I'm guessing that RCA paid itunes for a list or paid itunes to generate the email.

If the email had said something along the lines of " You purchased a song from XYZ Idol so perhaps you might be interested in David Cook's LO" that would understandable. But it specifically said I had purchased a David Cook song. And that is not true.

Geez..dont you guys get this? Its the same on every post concerning david cooks light on song. Archie fans post several posts saying negative things..numerous posts. Its the same people posting over and over on all of the sites containing anything to do with david cook and his new single. I love archie to death..met him..think hes a great person, but some of his fans(not all of them) are so humorous. I hope the general public isnt so stupid as to think these are just everyday people stumbling on this blog with negative things to say about cook. Its all the bad archie fans posting over and over again. Same story on all of cook reviews of his single light on. Same girl...wait she used several names..rockerchic LA..music something..and several other names posted on every cook site reviewing light on. I think some archie fans are still pissed he didnt win. Dont blame this on cook fans. Oh and by the way...I seen on archie sight people wanting to gift his single crush to people. I also bought several things from amazon..never got an email concerning buying light on by cook...but i see its number 1...go cook

itsme, what are you talking about? The gifting instructions from official Cook website and the spam emails from Amazon and iTunes are facts, not made up by Archies.

It reeks desperation, RCA!

Yeah it was on david cooks site about gifting to those who weren't about to get it. But all the archies run with this stuff. They cant wait for someone to say something bad about cook so they can say..look archie should have won. blah blah. Not all of them, just a few. Why cant everyone just say that they are both going to be extremely successful and be happy that they are both doing as good as they are? Why keep on with the competition stuff. All this does is stir up trouble. OH..archies song spotted higher on itunes..nah nah nah...its like second grade all over again. Now rca is desperate? Gawd...Im so sick of it. I also seen archie fans trying to gift crush to those who couldnt get it...so whats the big deal...............I wish both archie and cook success....Like I said..i love archie too..bought crush..gonna buy his cd. I dont hold his fans against him. Hes a sweet and nice and talented kid. He would be sick of all the fighting. I heard a fan tell archie that they hated cook..and archie said...i quote "aww you cant hate cook, hes a great guy" So why do his fans hate him?

I agree with a previous post. The phrasing in this blog bears an uncanny resemblance to comments posted by non-Cook fans on a certain other thread. Had the writer of this blog spent less time cutting and pasting and more time acquiring facts, they would have had more credibility. Thanks to some of the other commenters who mentioned that the title of the gifting instructions revealed that it was not Cook's idea but a request by international fans wanting to buy his single legally. Too bad this blog choose to put the heading of the gifting instructions in micro-font so that no one could see it.

itsme said...

OH, and this is my last time to post here..this is what this person who created this article wants..to see how much trouble they can start. Archies and cook fans...peace out. Love the music. Isnt that what its all about?

re: itsme --> Seems you are proving the posters point about Cook fans suffering from Archie paranoia... facts get shuffled under the rug if rogue Archies can be the scapegoats for every thing negative said about Cook. It's precisely this paranoia, and obsessive attitude you've displayed that fuels the ill feelings and lack of civility on boards such as this... the issue at hand are the murky and highly suspect marketing tactics alleged to have been engaged in by itunes and perhaps RCA to promote this song... was a disgruntled Archie behind this too?

Amazon sends out regular e-mails advertising lots of artists. I've never interpreted this as desperate. Unfortunately if you have the misfortune of being on a silly show like American Idol, every action you make gets scrutinized and dissected by people who have nothing more substantial to do. I really hope that Cook and his family do not stumble upon this crap.

"Where was it for Diana DeGarmo, Bo Bice and Katharine McPhee?"

And where was it for Kellie Pickler this week? She's also on a Sony/19 label and they failed to get her ALBUM, released Sept. 30th, into the Sept. 30th iTunes New Music Tuesday email newsletter!

http://www.apple.com/itunesnews/us/

Instead, David's Light On single was included. They also managed to get Jennifer Hudson's album included. Is it fair to Kellie to exclude her album from this important promotion? Hell no! No wonder her 40k HDD sales prediction is underwheling because the label's promotion has been even more underwhelming for the past 2 years. This is just one of the latest of many mistakes.

I am not sure what the whole commotion is about. The thing looks like a normal multi step marketing campaign from RCA.

And the person, who said he or she never bought an David Cook song on itunes:
Could it be you have bought a group performance with David Cook and that is the reason you are in the pool?

Anonymous said...

Idol always has fan wars. Nothing new. But talking about RCA's marketing play for LO has nothing to do with Archie. Although I do remember lots of comments about the tweens mass buying Crush to get it to #1. That was considered shameful by Cook's fans who are now pretty much doing the same thing. In the end who cares if they both do it.

Cook is getting the big RCA push and it'll be interesting to see if it pays off for the label. TOML is a big hit but no one knows for sure if LO will be. I don't think so but it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Anonymous said...

I'm an Archuleta fan, but I bought several Idol group performances as well as a couple of Cook singles during the Idol season.

I'm a regular Amazon.com customer, and I didn't receive the LO e-mail.

I really wonder how they composed their marketing list.

Anonymous said...

You only get the emails if you checked the box that said you wanted to be sent promotional emails when you ordered from ITunes or Amazon. The ITunes one went to anyone who checked the box and purchased something with Cook on it in the past. The Amazon one went to anyone who purchases Idol stuff. The Subject line mentioned Cook, but the email itself referenced multiple Idol product.

That said, the guy won, isn't he SUPPOSED to get a lot pf promotion? I mean really people. Grow up.

My personal take about the fact that RCA is taking such an aggressive (which is not in line with their usual way of promoting a song/singer) online marketing campaign - that 'light On' is a really average song (even though its does has some catchy parts)which is not well sung (or rather oversung with loud voice and little real emotion) by the latest American Idol. Which could be why it could not go higher up at the overall Itune chart. To those who rationalized that the song (and Mr David Cook) is overwhelmed by the heavyweights (like Nickleback and TI)- seems to conveniently forget that the song (and Mr Cook) is a heavyweight as well (and a fresh one for that) - being a recent winner in in the most-watched tv show.
I always feel that Mr Cook is a big voice - which relies more on gimmicks (such as his musical arrangement for his songs performed at the show and his public display of sentimentality) rather than true hearfelt delivery - to score points with the listening crowds.
Look at happened when he sang the National Antthem (for twice)- Stripped of the muscical backing, his voice is shown to be flat and emotionless. That is something he has to work on - as long as he is unable to work on the feeling/emotions, the best of songs stay average. Good luck.

Wow, this is some funny stuff. First, we have a blog post that reads like it was written by Jeff Archuleta's PR guy.

Let me address just one point from the original author: "Where was it (promotion) for Diana DeGarmo, Bo Bice, and Katherine McPhee?"

Well, gee, first of all maybe it's because Cook actually WON, and they didn't. Second, perhaps it's because they know Cook's going to make a crapload of money for them, and the others didn't inspire that confidence.

Notice who RCA puts their big push behind from Idol-- Cook and Daughtry. They're willing to spend make money, because they know they're going to make money.

Why would they be confident that Cook is going to be bankable? Well, his friggin' Magic Rainbows song has sold over 900,000 copies for one thing. Also, ten-to-one, they know exactly how many millions of his Idol song mp3s were sold during the season (we ourselves don't know the exact amount-- so far).

Now replying to some of the posts in this thread-- why in the world would RCA be desperate? Cook's coronation song, which I referenced above, is well on its way to being the highest selling one in the show's history. And Light On hit #3 on Itunes against must tougher competition than Crush faced and did it while starting the week with 1/7 of the radio impression numbers that Crush had when it dropped. AND Cook's Myspace hasn't even sent out a mass email to his 123,000 plus friends yet either.

And to the poster who accused characterized Cook's fans as acting unsavory-- that's pretty rich coming from the fan group who brandished signs at AI shows demanding "recounts" and "joking" about killing David Cook himself. Oh and of course there's the fact that some of you guys CANVASSED DOOR-TO-DOOR for Archie before the finale as if he were a political candidate.

Also, what the hell is wrong with sending out e-mails advertising your product? It's called ADVERTISING. It's what businesses do when they want to sell something.

And finally, I wouldn't exactly be crowing about Crush's "success". The only week that Crush could have gone to #1 on Itunes was the week it dropped because the competition was so light that week-- check the numbers if you don't believe me.

But, also after lucking out which week it debuted and starting at #2 on the Hot 100 (propeled by a massive organized buying campaign), it dropped like a stone to #15 the following week. And it's never been any higher since then.

Not a big fan of the rock genre.. I find some of the culture to be off-putting, and from personal experience I have found elements of it to be vulgar, aggressive and non inclusive of women and minorities.

This "ROCK STAR" mindset may be out of place on what is considered to be a family oriented show like AI. There are documented reports from the tour of Cook fans bringing and displaying sexually suggestive signs into the venue -"David, are U a Tripod?" "Free the Anaconda", throwing panties, condoms and sexual lubricant on stage during Cook's performance - in plain view of children and even his own mother at one venue... and he seemed to be OK with it, and encourage it.

There is a clash of music culture going on that will not be solved or remedied quickly. Not sure if TPTB at Idol care about these perceptions,or these silly fan wars - as long as albums sell and tickets sell and they reap the profits, the rest can go stuff it.

I'm certain there are plenty examples of bad behavior from fans in these camps - and others - to go around.. not sure I've seen it devolve, even in seasons past, so quickly into the blatant displays of mean spiritedness, vulgarity overall lack of class and civility that marks the discourse between the fangoups this season. Leaving the Light On in hopes with a new winner in S9, it won't be as intense...

Anonymous said...

MRG-I'm sorry, but Cook fans have absolutely NO room to be calling out Archie's fans when it comes to crazy fan behavior. From what I've seen, there's plenty of crazy to go around in both fanbases, so neither side can really point the finger at the other.

I'm seeing an awful lot of spin from the rabid fans on both sides right now. First, I still don't get how these emails that were sent out by itunes and Amazon=desperation. I received the Amazon email, and the email I received also advertised both Davids' singles and upcoming albums, along with Jordin's single and some other former Idols.

Next bit of spin-this notion that Crush faced weak competition when it was released because Jive was afraid that the song couldn't hang against fierce competition. The Cook fans who continue to spin this argument conveniently fail to mention the fact that Crush is competing with the same stiff competition that Light On faced this week when it debuted on iTunes. Crush is, in fact, holding its own and has been creeping back up the iTunes chart again. It's doing so without the benefit of the "gifting" campaigns that helped it debut at #2 back in August. The same gifting campaigns that are helping the sales of Light On this week.

Next bit of spin-Crush had so much more radio airplay than Light On when it was released on iTunes. No, not really. Definately not enough to make a huge difference in sales. Part of the reason the audience impression number was higher than Light On may be that the bulk of its spins in the week between the "premiere" and the iTunes release date came from the same NYC radio station where it made its debut. If Crush had any significant airplay back then, it might have debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 instead of #2, but it was always going to be difficult to knock off a huge radio hit like Disturbia. Oh, and since when is Rihanna "weak" competition?

You know, I like both of these guys and hope they have successful careers. I don't understand this obsessive need for some fans to keep the competition going and to belittle these guys and their accomplishments. The obsession is bordering on paranoia. The world will not end if Light On doesn't have a better opening week than Crush, and vice versa. David Cook doesn't have to outdo David Archuleta in every thing he does in order to be taken seriously as a recording artist, and David Archuleta won't be any less of a talent if he doesn't outsell Cook. These guys are doing just fine.

"But, also after lucking out which week it debuted and starting at #2 on the Hot 100 (propeled by a massive organized buying campaign), it dropped like a stone to #15 the following week. And it's never been any higher since then."

Talk about being hypocritical. What do you think is going to happen with Light On in week #2 or #3 when it's not being propped up by a similar "massive organized buying campaign"? Yep, you guessed it, it's going to drop like a stone. It's happening already.

Fan Wars are for immature children. David & Archie are enjoying each others success. let each David enjoy their success. the music business is tough enough without fanwars. Support each other guys because when season 8 starts the two Davids will have only their own successes to carry them through.

Light On single is doing amazingly well. For a single that has not gone for adds yet but is already being added to radio stations by the stations pd's is truly amazing. Light On will grow and grow in radio play and sales over the next 8 weeks. Rolling Stone gave it a favorable review and expects it to be a radio hit. this song has legs and that's exactly what RCA wants. Not a fast hit and miss, but grow it over the weeks. It's genius really.

I hope the album does well...but I hate that people hate on Justin Guarini like...as if he wasn't basically one of the Guinea Pigs of the whole Idol franchise...as if he isn't talented in his own right regardless of record sales. Besides also being outrageously talented, Kelly had to sell. There was no way around that. Justin basically got thrown the scraps from that table, my friend.

I know for a fact that he had no say over what they put on his album, and had to just basically go along for the ride. If you look at what he sang on the show versus what they put on his album...night and day.

Either way, the right things happened, Kelly deserved the win and everything she has...and Justin has made a great name, and had plenty of success for himself in the Broadway, and Television world.
